Paint brushes can change a pet into most of its available colours, but not necessarily all. Some of the more elabourate colours are only available via the [[lab ray]]: robot, clay, and [[MSP]] being examples of such. Any colour (except Royal) can be given by the lab ray without need of a paint brush. Additionally, the only away of obtaining a mutant pet is to feed it a transmogrification potion.
 
Often, morphing potions are available to change a Neopet into a different [[species]] and/or colour, which are, for some of the more popular combinations, a much cheaper option that a paint brush.
 
==Retired Paintbrushes==
 
Very rarely, a paint brush colour is retired. The paint brushes become unusable (and in the case of the Unicorn brush, disappear completely) and pets painted the retired colour no long remain it, although it is not known whether they revert to the basic colours or otherwise as this is such a rare occurrence.
