To-do: Add dates, images, and...well, finish up the rest of the pets.

Over the course of Neopets' history, some Neopets have received updates to their designs and even complete overhauls since their debut.

Pre-Customization Updates
Acara
The Acara originated as a Neopet called the "Tigren". On July 19, 2000, the Acara then gained its current name, and a design that (vaguely) resembled its current design.

Aisha
The original Aisha sported a cat like appearance - perhaps moreso then its current design. The next revision updated it to include a smile, more curved eyes, and an overall more "rounded" and polished appearance.

Blumaroo
The first revision of the Bluamroo was fairly minor, cleaning up the linework - most noticeable around the base of the nose, and also in the placement of its left eye - and replacing the gradients with more solid shading.

Bruce
The initial Bruce had just a subtle difference from today's incarnation: it was initially a cropped photo of television personality Bruce Forsyth from the torso up. The next revision replaced his appearance with a drawn caricature of Forsyth instead.

The next, more finalized revision of the Bruce changed it to something considerably more Neopet-themed, and was turned into a penguin. Its last pre-customization update significantly reduced its build, made the bow much larger, and increased the size of its eyes.

Buzz
The Buzz started out as a Neopet called the "Fleye", which was fittingly a giant, flying eyeball with wings and heart-shaped antennae.

It was eventually revised to a considerably more familiar design. The next revision straightened its pose and gave it a slightly lighter coloring.

Chia
The initial Chia, being a pet with a simple design - was considerably similar to the Chia of today. The only differences distinguishing the former design apart from its current are the use of gradients, a simple body shape, and a different pose that looks directly at the viewers.

Cybunny
The redesign of the Cybunny seems to have moderately reduced its torso build (or at least, increased the size of the mane to make its body look thinner), make alterations to its face, and added a small amount of hair in front of its ears. The mane design had its spot outlines removed and more pastel-like colors.

Elephante
The redesign of the Elephante gave it its sitting pose, added its hat, resized the eyes and added orange pupils, and significantly adjusted the coloring. Interestingly for a design that was still early in the site's lifespan, the redesign of the Elephante would remain its current design for a while until the 2007 customization update.

Eyrie
The original Eyrie was first named the "Tatsu", followed by "Cerpull". The Tatsu/Cerpull featured a more sinister, dragon-like appearance. The subsequent design removed the yellow coloring on the wings and back, removed the red fingertips and back scales, ditched its horns in favor for ears and a orange, bird-like beak.

Gelert
The original Gelert was named the "Polypup", and had a considerably different build with a rounder body, less defined nose, and rounder eyes.

JubJub
The original JubJub was known as the "JibJib", which was changed to perhaps avoid confusion with the identically-titled company. The following redesign was relatively minor, very subtly improving the shading (particularly on the mane) and adjusted its pose, where it now stands on both feet. The next design bestowed it with larger, shinier eyes, differently-colored eyebrows, and slightly wider, darker feet.

The JubJub then had a more drastic reimagining which gave it a standing pose, a larger forehead, a slightly less tealish fur coloring, and pupil dark eyes with more spacing.

Kacheek
The original name was the "Badeek", and it had a black eyemask. The next Kacheek was given a defined body, lighter coloring, and a small amount of hair. After that, the linework was made thicker, shines were added to the eyes, and the shading was slightly adjusted.

Kau
The Kau was originally an entirely different Neopet known as the "Macy Gray". It - or rather, she - was a caricature of the singer of the same name, surrounded by music notes and equipped with a ray gun.

The redesigned Kau gave it its familiar design.

Koi
The original Koi was significantly thicker and darker colored. The next Koi streamlined its appearance, keeping its overall features but with heavily redesigned proportions and details.

The next Koi gave it larger pupils, different scales, and a more detailed skin coloring. This redesign is perhaps significant for being the only drastic redesign that did not occur in the first couple years of the site.

Quiggle
The Quiggle was initially known as the "Frogstomp", and had a very simple body design, crossed eyes, and a light blue coloring. The next Quiggle gave significant spacing between the eyes, a more amiable face (complete with a large mouth and eyes that were actually focused), and red stripes. The next design, while keeping the Quiggle's overall pose, improved the shading and linework.

Usul
The first Usul had blue coloring and red features. The next revision gave it larger pupils and a more amiable facial expression. The coloring of its fur was changed to be tan for each of the basic colors.

2007 Customization Update
In one of the largest updates to Neopet designs - and indeed, perhaps the entire website in general - was introduced in April 2007. Neopets were completely redrawn and were given the ability to wear clothing and stand in front of backgrounds. As a result of this:
*Neopets now stand in a standardized pose, with their left hand slightly outstretched to enable them to hold objects. Neopets that once faced to their right now face the opposite direction.
*The different poses are now much less varied, now being limited to facial expressions slightly changing based on their current emotion.
*Neopets now appear sad when they are at least "very hungry". (To-do: Find out whether or not this was always the case, because my memory is bad right now.)
*Male and female Neopets now have slight variations to distinguish each other.

Post-Customization Updates
Transparent Peophin
The initial version of the Transparent Peophin was released on July 25, 2015.

After some...less-than-positive feedback on the design from users, it was redrawn about a month later, giving it much smoother shading, adding bodily features, and adjusting its overall skeletal structure.

Woodland and Eventide Kikos
The Woodland and the Eventide Kikos were initially lacking their bandage, with the latter also missing its hair. The two were eventually fixed around the same time that the Transparent Peophin was redrawn.

Gold Kau
The original Gold Kau originally sported a peculiar hoof design (likened by users to resembling clogs), which was eventually fixed at about the same time as the Transparent Peophin was revised.

Ice and Custard Buzzes
The original Ice and Custard Buzz, released on January 12, 2016, originally had pupil eyes rather than the standard, flatly-colored insect eyes of the Buzz. (This was speculated by users to have been the result of an artist misinterpreting the design of the eye reflection.) This was fixed by the time the Buzzes arrived at the Rainbow Pool at around January 26.

After some...less-than-positive feedback on the design from users, it was redrawn about a month later, giving it much smoother shading, adding features, and adjusting the skeletal structure in its fin.

Woodland and Eventide Kikos
The Woodland and the Eventide Kikos were initially missing their bandage. This was eventually fixed, around the same time that the Transparent Peophin was redrawn.

Gold Kau
The original Gold Kau originally sported a peculiar hoof design (likened by users to resembling golden clogs), which was eventually fixed at about the same time as the Transparent Peophin was revised.

Ice and Custard Buzzes
The original Ice and Custard Buzz, released on January 12, 2016, originally had pupil eyes rather than the standard, flatly-colored insect eyes of the Buzz. This was noted by users to have been the result of an artist misinterpreting the design of the eye reflection. This was fixed by the time the Buzzes arrived at the Rainbow Pool at around January 26.

To-do: Add dates, images, and...well, finish up.

Interestingly for a still early design, this would remain all the way until 2007.

The original Gelert was named the "Polypup", and had a considerably different build with a rounder body, less defined nose, and rounder eyes.

JubJub
The redesigned Kau gave it its familiar design.

The Neopian Adventure Generator is a "choose your own adventure" generator introduced on March 10, 2003, where users can use write their own adventures (i.e. interactive stories where the player can make their own choices on what they want to do) and play other people's adventures. The Generator is hosted by Borri, a Red Quiggle wizard.

Gameplay
Navigation
Adventures are separated based on their genre into eleven categories as listed below. Each page shows the user forty adventures at a time along with the page count and its user rating, and refreshing the page (with the exception of the "Top 40" page) will show more random adventures. Clicking the "Play" button will make the adventure pop up in a new window.

Adventures themselves are divided into various pages which each explain the current happenings in the story, sometimes with an image located to the right that serves to illustrate the action. Adventures can be about any subject that one can think of - such as navigating a forest, babysitting Neopets for somebody, or personality quizzes, to name a few examples. A page can end with a maximum of four links, and each of them can lead the player to a different part of the story.

Endings
Some links will lead to pages that are "dead ends"; i.e. "bad" endings that require the player to restart the adventure from the beginning. The underlying goal is to reach the "finish line" of the whole story, which is designated with the words "The End!" under the main text.

Ratings
Adventures can be rated on a scale from one to five stars by clicking one of the options at the bottom of the adventure. This has the advantage of possibly making the adventure appear in the "Top 40" list. It is even possible for the player to rate the same adventure multiple times (if one really loves a certain adventure), up to once per day.

Creating an Adventure
The process to creating an adventure of one's own is fairly straightforward. The player first chooses a title, the land that it takes place in (the only effect that this option seems to have on the adventure is on the default color scheme provided), a genre, a color scheme for each element on the page, and whether or not to show page numbers.

Pages are listed in a "master list", which conveniently gives both brief snippets of each page's contents, the page numbers that the page links to, whether or not a page is a Dead End/Finish Line, or whether or not the page has an image or not. The player can click the "edit" button on an entry to edit that page's contents.

For an adventure to show up on the list of adventures for other users to play, an adventure must first be "locked". If the player then wishes to edit the adventure again, then he or she can then unlock and relock their adventure at will.

Categories
*Top 40 (Adventures with the highest ratings are listed here, provided that the adventure has at least fifty votes.)
Neopets Adventure Spotlight
Users could submit their adventures to the Neoadventure Spotlight, and if their adventure was chosen, they won 10,000 Neopoints and received a trophy. The spotlight would be discontinued on June 6, 2009, with the final winner being the aptly-titled "The Last Neoadventure".

Glitches
*A recent glitch since 2014, as a result of Neopets' transition to new servers following its acquisition by JumpStart, makes it so that most of the category lists (except for the "Top 40" and "Random" lists) do not show any adventures and will instead show the text "There were no adventures found matching this criteria", effectively rendering most adventures directly inaccessible. Adventures can, however, still be accessed by clicking the link to them on a user lookup, or if the player remembers the username of the creator of the adventure.
*Placing single quotation marks (') anywhere in a page's text will trigger the "Your page contained one or more inappropriate words" notice. As a result, contractions are unable to be used. Additionally, the "inappropriate words" filter is notorious amongst fans for being prone to trigger easily, leaving one confused to what the offending word(s) could be triggering it.
*For a time, images could not be properly inserted in adventures. The glitch eventually disappeared at one point in 2014.

Interestingly for a still early design, this would remain all the way until 2007.

2007 Customization Update
In one of the largest updates to Neopet designs - and indeed, perhaps the entire website in general - was introduced in April 2007. Neopets were given the ability to wear clothing and stand in front of backgrounds.

As a result of this, Neopets now stood in a standardized pose.

Post-Customization Updates
Transparent Peophin
The initial version of the Transparent Peophin was released on July 25, 2015. After some...less-than-positive feedback on the design from users, it was redrawn about a month later, giving it much smoother shading and adjusting the skeletal structure in its fin.

Pre-Customization Updates
Acara

Categories
Adventures can, however, still be accessed by clicking the link to them on a user lookup, or if the player remembers the username of the creator of the adventure.
*Placing single quotation marks (') anywhere in a page's text will trigger the "Your page contained one or more inappropriate words" notice. The Neopian Adventure Generator is a "choose your own adventure" generator introduced on March 10, 2003, where users can use write their own adventures (i.e. interactive stories where the player can make their own choices on what to do) and play other people's adventures.

Adventures can be about any subject that one can think of - such as navigating a forest, babysitting Neopets for somebody, personality quizzes, to name a few examples.

Trudy's Surprise is a daily introduced to Neopets in August 2015.

Gameplay
Once a day, the user is presented with a slot machine on the next page that he or she visits, with a "Play" button located beneath the slot machine. After clicking the button and causing the reels to spin, the slot machine then stops, awarding a variable amount of Neopoints depending on how many matching images there is. The results are entirely random; despite being a slot machine, the user doesn't choose when to stop the reels, but simply clicks the "Play" button once to play. Trudy's Surprise becomes available to play twenty-four hours after the last spin (rather than the slot machine reappearing at 12:00:00 pm NST, as is sometimes the norm with dailies). If the user waits longer than this time period to spin the reels, then the prizes reset from day one.

After twenty-five consecutive spins, the last of which culminating with an award of 100,000 Neopoints, the prizes then reset. If none of the reels match, then the player can receive a "Bad Luck Bonus" up to once a week, awarding more Neopoints than the usual amount given out when the reels do match. If the player gets no matching reels more than once within a week, then the turn-out for the subsequent spins will give the usual "no-matches" reward, being slightly lower than the usual rewards.

Glitches
*Placing single quotation marks (') anywhere in a page's text will trigger the "Your page contained one or more inappropriate words" notice. As a result, contractions are unable to be used.
*A recent glitch means that most of the category lists (except for the "Top 40" and "Random" lists) do not show any adventures, instead showing the text "There were no adventures found matching this criteria", effectively rendering most adventures directly inaccessible.
