There are a variety of different Yooyus used in the game, which gives the sport an unpredictable twist, requiring a team to alter its strategy depending on the type of Yooyu currently in play.

Yooyuball plays as a [[Wikipedia:Adobe Flash|flash]] game, where users can play with use of the mouse and keyboard. Before each game of Yooyuball begins, users choose the formation they want their players to stand in and select which direction they would like to move the ball down the field. Using the mouse, users point at the player they want to move around, which will select the player. The selected player can be guided around the field using the mouse. When a player has possession of the ball, clicking the left mouse button throws the ball.

If a user wanted to deselect a player, they pressed the space bar or the ''S'' key. When none of the players were selected, they can clicked anywhere on the field to move the closest player to the position they clicked on. To toggle between players, users press the left and right arrow keys (or the ''A'' and ''D'' keys). Users can activate a player when toggling between them by pressing the space bar. Pressing the Shift key to moves players back to their starting positions.

A new rule was added on June 24, 2006, which would make the Yooyu jump from a ''Keeper's'' hands if it stayed there longer than 5 seconds. It is believed this was implemented because too many users were scoring a single goal then letting the ''Keeper'' hold onto the ball for the remainder of play, scoring an automatic win.

Between each goal, a cutscene is played, showing either the goal, the crowd, or - added in 2007 - the Yooyuball selection machines beneath the arena. While the cutscene is playing, game time is still used up, but a 'continue' button appears after a short delay allowing the user to skip most of the animation. An animation accompanies the introduction of each Yooyu to the field, also, but this can be skipped using the space bar.

For the first four years, the Altador Cup Tournament consisted of sixteen teams representing the lands of [[Neopia]]. Following the introduction of [[Shenkuu]], one team sat out each year to keep the numbers even, until the discovery of [[Moltara]] allowed a full roster of eighteen teams to play in Altador Cup V. Users could only support one team at a time, and could only switch between teams in the first competition, between rounds.

The first team to cancel participation was [[Kreludor]] for Altador Cup II - in a statement by [[Derlyn Fonnet]], this was due to a malfunctioning gravity generator leading to [[wikipedia:Spaceflight osteopenia|reduced "muscle and bone" density]]. The following year they returned to the competition, but [[Kiko Lake]] could not participate due to travel issues. [[Brightvale]] was unable to participate in Altador Cup IV as [[King Hagan]] thought it would make the country harder to govern.

An additional team is available each year as the practice team, from [[Jelly World]]. While the members of the team are unknown, it's known the ''Goalkeeper'' is a Jelly [[Kougra]] and the forwards a Jelly [[Kau]] and [[Usul]].

So far [[Lutari Island]] has not participated in any of the Altador Cups, though two [[Lutari]] have.

In what was considered improbable and the biggest story of [[Altador Cup 2006]], Roo Island managed to reach Round 3 of the tournament, being defeated by [[Darigan Citadel]] and placing as number four. After a voting of fans and players that Roo Island had the ugliest jersey, fans hoped to do even better this past tournament,with a new uniform and the team's signing of [[Maraqua#Colour|Maraquan]] forward [[Jair Tollet]], who was traded to Roo Island for [[Dayla]], the red Lenny (She got injured in the first practice and never played again). This helped Roo Island make it to the final match, losing to [[Darigan Citadel]], and overall placing in second.

Third time proved to be the charm, when in [[Altador Cup III|2008]], Roo Island beat Krawk Island in the Altador Cup final, claiming the cup. In 09, however, Roo Island placed ninth, giving them the record of farthest place difference between cups after winning, as Darigan Citadel and Haunted Woods both placed seventh the tournaments after they won. In [[Altador Cup V|2010]], Roo Island was questioned for making no changes to their lineup in the offseason. However, though a pedestrian start first half, they kicked it up a notch before the mid-season break by winning 16 of the last 19 matches. This catapulted them up to 4th place going into the finals. [[Kreludor]] was able to sneak out a victory in the first round, and [[Darigan Citadel]] defeated them in the second round, leaving 4th place to Roo Island.

Able to befuddle defenders with torrents of crisp passes and a labrynth of picks and blocks, Kreludor has been known to take their more talented opponents and tie them in knots.

In the 2007 [[Altador Cup]], Kreludor did not participate. They were replaced by Shenkuu, but returned in 2008 replacing Kiko Lake. Although storming the competition in 09', going into the bracket as the top seed, they had to settle for fourth after defeats from [[Shenkuu]] and the [[Lost Desert]].
During the [[Altador Cup V]] Kreludor was a top contender and though they entered the finals in 1st, they left in 2nd.

Not making it past the first round, fans hoped for a surprise in 2007, similar to that of [[Roo Island]]'s team, though many believed they wouldn't make it past the Round-Robin Phase. With the addition of forward [[Moni Vyshan]], they hoped the team would be more competitive than the previous year's.

En route to AC III, they were sidelined by a rock slide. Kiko Lake entered AC IV with a drastic lineup change fans thought would help them a lot. Although this new line-up beat Maraqua in the first game which led to be a confidence booster, they later fell from grace and into the final bracket being beaten by Terror Mountain, placing them 14th. '''Darigan's Yooyuball team''' have few major weaknesses, although they have been criticized in the past for playing too easy a schedule during the regular season, and as a result are unprepared when the tournament comes. To fix this, Darigan Citadel relented and added more matches against a few of the better teams for the 2006 season. Due to this they didn't finish as high in the standings as they normally did, but it gave them the toughness to play in the games which mattered the most (or at least this is what the fans hoped). Their tactic paid off, and they managed to place 2nd in the [[Altador Cup]], ending their reputation as post-season underachievers.

Rather than rest, however, the Citadel's team made an upgrade for the ''Goalkeeper'', replacing the less-than-mobile [[Mungo Lifler]] with promising netminder [[Reshar Collifey]] for the 2007 season. And due to the success of the previous year's tactic, Darigan again faced a string of difficult teams for their regular schedule. Darigan was from the start considered the favourite of the [[Altador Cup 2007|2007 Altador Cup]], maintaining a position at the top of the leader-board for the round robin. In the finals it faced off against [[Roo Island#Yooyuball|Roo Island]]'s team and finally won the Cup on July 9th. However, they also fell to the curse of previous winner [[Haunted Woods]] and subsequent winner Roo Island to not be able to reach the standard again, placing seventh the following year and the year after that, although showing promise initially, placing seventh again after a round one loss to [[Mystery Island]].

Coming into [[Altador Cup V]], Darigan Citadel was favorite to win the Cup, so the expectations were high. Even though they were swept by [[Brightvale]] on day one, they roared back winning 15 of their next 17 games, soaring to the top of the standings. Ending the season with a record of 23-4-7, they were in 3rd place going into the finals, getting ready to face off against [[Lost Desert]]. Though they lost, they were able to beat [[Roo Island]] in round two to end the season with the bronze.
