The '''Altador Cup''' is a yearly gaming [[plot]] on [[Neopets]] which begins on June 1, and continues until the championship is finished. As a sporting event, eighten teams as 2010 from the lands of [[Neopia]] gathered in [[Altador]] to compete in the sport of Yooyuball for the Altador Cup trophy. During the inaugural Altador Cup, the tournament took place between June 1, 2006 and August 4. During the second Altador Cup, the plot lasted from June 1, 2007 to July 9. The third annual Altador Cup commenced on June 12, 2008 and ended on July 17. The fourth annual Altador Cup commenced on June 2, 2009, and ended on July 5th, 2009.

The game played to win the Altador Cup is called '''Yooyuball'''. Gameplay appears to be based on [[Wikipedia:Jai_alai|Jai alai]] and lacrosse, where players carry a ball in a sling and charge down the field, trying to throw the ball into the other team's net to score a goal. The ball is actually a rolled up [[Petpet]] called a [[Yooyu]], a creature native to Altador. There are a variety of different Yooyus used in the game, which gives the sport an unpredictable twist, requiring a team to alter its strategy depending on the type of Yooyu currently in play.

*''Normal'' - The most common Yooyu which behaves like a normal ball of play without any extra effects. This Yooyu was added during the second Altador Cup. This Yooyu was added in the 2007 games.
*''Fire'' - A very fast Yooyu, it moves in a straight line and must be transferred very quickly between team-mates, because keeping it too long could result in burns.
*''Snow'' - Much slower than the Normal Yooyu, the Snow Yooyu also moves in a straight line. It freezes the muscles of those playing with it, making game play quite slow.

Yooyuball plays as a [[Wikipedia:Adobe Flash|flash]] game, where users can play with use of the mouse and keyboard. Before each game of Yooyuball begins, users choose the formation they want their players to stand in and select which direction they would like to move the ball down the field. Using the mouse, users point at the player they want to move around, which will select the player. The selected player can be guided around the field using the mouse. When a player has possession of the ball, clicking the left mouse button throws the ball.

If a user wanted to deselect a player, they pressed the space bar or the ''S'' key. When none of the players were selected, they can clicked anywhere on the field to move the closest player to the position they clicked on. To toggle between players, users press the left and right arrow keys (or the ''A'' and ''D'' keys). Users can activate a player when toggling between them by pressing the space bar. Pressing the Shift key to moves players back to their starting positions.

A new rule was added on June 24, 2006, which would make the Yooyu jump from a ''Keeper's'' hands if it stayed there longer than 5 seconds. It is believed this was implemented because too many users were scoring a single goal then letting the ''Keeper'' hold onto the ball for the remainder of play, scoring an automatic win.

Between each goal, a cutscene is played, showing either the goal, the crowd, or - added in 2007 - the Yooyuball selection machines beneath the arena. While the cutscene is playing, game time is still used up, but a 'continue' button appears after a short delay allowing the user to skip most of the animation. An animation accompanies the introduction of each Yooyu to the field, also, but this can be skipped using the space bar.

The Altador Cup Committee is a group of officials who carefully examine each play, making sure the rules of Yooyuball are followed. Players or fans who feel something needs to be reviewed can file a petition, and the committee will decide whether or not to rule on the matter. Once both sides of the issue are heard, the committee gathers in its private chambers to discuss the situation and vote on an appropriate course of action. Some feel they are too strict, but it's the committee's decisions which maintain the integrity of the game, and the committee members' actions are always motivated by a desire to protect the game's best interests.

It was the Committee which sent invitations to the worlds of Neopia in 2006, asking to participate in the first Altador Cup tournament in 1000 years. It's also assumed the Committee is a front for the actions taken by [[The Neopets Team]], who make sure the game is fair and balanced for all users.

The Altador Cup Tournament consists of sixteen teams representing the lands of Neopia. In total from previous years, eighteen worlds have participated, each sending a team to compete in the Colosseum in Altador. Users could only support one team at a time, and could only switch to another between rounds (only in the 2006 games). After Shenkuu was disovered in later 2006, Shenkuu's team replaced Kreludor's. Why this was done was released in a statement by [[Derlyn Fonnet]], explaining that the 'muscle and bone' density of the Kreludans was, due to a malfunctioning gravity generator, too low to safely play on Neopia. To the happiness of many fans, Kreludor returned for the 2008 tournament. However, Kiko Lake could not participate because of a travel issue. Recently, the discovery of 2009's Altador Cup logo has shown that it will be [[Brightvale]] that will not participate, because apparently, [[King Hagan]] states that it would be difficult to govern the country with the Altador Cup going on. The 2010 Altador Cup has a full 18 teams playing, as of the discovery of a new land, Moltara. This also means tht no teams will be sitting out, much to the pleasure of many fans.

Only sixteen teams were available for users to play, but a 17th team came from [[Jelly World]], which has participated as the practice team for all three years. While the members of the team are unknown, it's known the ''Goalkeeper'' is a Jelly [[Kougra]] and the forwards a Jelly [[Kau]] and [[Usul]].

So far [[Lutari Island]] has not participated in any of the Altador Cups, though two [[Lutari]] have. Neopets has yet to offer any explanation for why Lutari Island does not participate.

Added in the 2007 games, '''Slushie Slinger''' is an game users could play for lower points besides playing Yooyuball. Users play the role of a Red [[Tuskaninny]] waitress at the Slushie Concession Stand, and must serve impatient fans (Red [[Nimmo]], Purple [[Tonu]], Yellow [[Ogrin]], etc.) their [[slushie]]s while Yooyuball games play. Depending on what team the user joined, the Slushie Concession Stand would be the team's official slushie stand. Players would lose a life every time an empty slushie bottle falls to the floor or if the customers reach the end of the counter.

Added in the 2007 games, '''Make Some Noise''' is an game users could play for lower points besides playing Yooyuball. Assuming the role of the [[Techo Fanatic]], users must cheer as loud as they can by tapping two randomly chosen keys together, raising the sound meter, for as long as they can in 30 seconds, then (though this is not necessary) pressing the spacebar before the time runs out. Depending on what team the user joined, the Techo Fanatic would be seen wearing that teams shirt, and cheering for them.
 

==Shootout Showdown==
Shootout Showdown is a new game in the [[Altador Cup IV|2009 games]]. You take control of a Yooyuball player, trying to score goals against the opponents Keeper. The aim is to score 5 goals as quickly as possible, within 60 seconds, without missing or letting the keeper save your shots.

Unlike regular plots where the plot was written by The Neopets Team, the plot was directed by the collective users on Neopets, and how well they played together in each of their selected teams. A plot summary was written after play to act out who won in each cause. Also, each year had their own methods of participation, and how the plot would progress.

As another part of the Altador Cup, The Neopets Team participates in a tournament play of their own. They did this in 2006, and only again in 2010.

The Altador Cup Tournament consists of sixteen teams representing the lands of Neopia. In total from previous years, eighteen worlds have participated, each sending a team to compete in the Colosseum in Altador. Users could only support one team at a time, and could only switch to another between rounds (only in the 2006 games). After Shenkuu was disovered in later 2006, Shenkuu's team replaced Kreludor's. Why this was done was released in a statement by [[Derlyn Fonnet]], explaining that the 'muscle and bone' density of the Kreludans was, due to a malfunctioning gravity generator, too low to safely play on Neopia. To the happiness of many fans, Kreludor returned for the 2008 tournament. However, Kiko Lake could not participate because of a travel issue. Recently, the discovery of 2009's Altador Cup logo has shown that it will be [[Brightvale]] that will not participate, because apparently, [[King Hagan]] states that it would be difficult to govern the country with the Altador Cup going on. The 2010 Altador Cup has a full 18 teams playing, as of the discovery of a new land, Moltara. This also means tht no teams will be sitting out, much to the pleasure of many fans.

Only sixteen teams were available for users to play, but a 17th team came from [[Jelly World]], which has participated as the practice team for all three years. While the members of the team are unknown, it's known the ''Goalkeeper'' is a Jelly [[Kougra]] and the forwards a Jelly [[Kau]] and [[Usul]].

So far [[Lutari Island]] has not participated in any of the Altador Cups, though two [[Lutari]] have. Neopets has yet to offer any explanation for why Lutari Island does not participate.

Users play the role of a Red [[Tuskaninny]] waitress at the Slushie Concession Stand, and must serve impatient fans (Red [[Nimmo]], Purple [[Tonu]], Yellow [[Ogrin]], etc.) their [[slushie]]s while Yooyuball games play. Depending on what team the user joined, the Slushie Concession Stand would be the team's official slushie stand. Players would lose a life every time an empty slushie bottle falls to the floor or if the customers reach the end of the counter.

Depending on what team the user joined, the Techo Fanatic would be seen wearing that teams shirt, and cheering for them.

Shootout Showdown is a new game in the [[Altador Cup IV|2009 games]]. You take control of a Yooyuball player, trying to score goals against the opponents Keeper. The aim is to score 5 goals as quickly as possible, within 60 seconds, without missing or letting the keeper save your shots.

The '''Lost Desert''' is an [[wikipedia:Arid|arid]] region in [[Neopia]]'s [[wikipedia:Southern Hemisphere|southern hemisphere]]. It was discovered by the rest of Neopia as part of the [[Brucey B and the Lucky Coin]] [[plot]], when [[Brucey B]] managed to travel south through the [[Haunted Woods]]. The Desert is shared by two kingdoms, the second of which was introduced following the [[Lost Desert Plot]].

For the most part, the Lost Desert has an [[Wikipedia:Ancient Egpyt|Ancient Egyptian]] theme, but also shows [[wikipedia:Arabian Peninsula|Arabic]] and [[wikipedia:Persian Empire|ancient Persian]] stylistic elements.

==The Kingdoms in the Lost Desert==
There are two cities in the current Lost Desert. There is the city of Sakhmet, capital of the most prosperous area of the Desert, and the newly rediscovered city of Qasala, which is in ruins but currently being repopulated. Shortly after its discovery, [[Dr. Frank Sloth]] invaded the Lost Desert and attacked Sakhmet, succeeding in taking the [[Sakhmetian]] palace before his forces were beaten back and the magic [[Staff of Alhasutek]] was destroyed.

===Sakhmet===
A city of spires and domes, Sakhmet is constructed predominantly of sandstone. It was occupied by Dr Sloth when he invaded, and he managed to build a space-worthy escape pod into one of the towers. The [[Royal]] Palace of Sakhmet is one of the most stunning structures in the [[Neopian]] World.

The Sakhmetian Royal Family went through a time of turbulence after the Lost Desert was discovered. Following the poisoning of [[King Coltzan III]] in a move to usurp the throne, and the Royal Family held an investigation in which it drafted in the users to analyse the case, with the promised reward of items from the Royal Treasury (priceless Battle Scarabs). After the case was closed, a shrine was erected in the King's honour, in which was placed his Crown, which was said to be inhabited by the ghost of Coltzan. As the shrine was unveiled, however, it emerged that the cunning [[Malkus Vile]], a [[wikipedia:Organized crime|crime lord]], had had the crown stolen - [[The Hunt for the Crown]] was on. Since the crown was returned, the Ghost of Coltzan blesses Neopets who mourn at his obelisk.

The Royal Family of Sakhmet went under another turbulent time, when the [[Princess Amira]] (who had inherited the throne from Coltzan III) received [[Prince Jazan]] IV of Qasala who demanded her hand in marriage based on some document of betrothment he had gathered from somewhere. He believed that marrying a Sakhmetain Princess would restore his lands and people, so when the Princess refused, he stole the City away with dark magic, where it became plagued by his demons. When he fell in love with [[Nabile]] (who could be seen as a princess of thieves, though her mother was Princess Neera so technically she is a real princess, as a matter of fact, she's Princess Amira's cousin), they married and Jazan restored Sakhmet, but his land did not prosper again and in fact the prophecy he fulfilled brought back to life his wicked, power-mad father [[Razul]] who attacked the Lost Desert until he was stopped.

===Qasala===
A once-beautiful city that fell on hard times and is now mostly in ruins after being obliterated 200 years ago by a sandstorm. Amongst the ruined buildings lie caches of histories and magic. One of the more notable buildings is the '''Temple of 1,000 Tombs'''.

This once thriving city had a very well respected Royal Family, until Razul cursed his own people, and his own son, Jazan, and laid down a prophecy that would enable him to live again after his death. Both Razul and Jazan controlled considerable sorcery. Since then, it has been haunted by the [[Spirit of the Ruins]], a Grundo-like spirit.

==Activities in the Lost Desert==
The Lost Desert has a large number of shops, such as [[Lady Osiri]]'s [[Lady Osiri's Pottery|Pottery]], [[Sutek]]'s [[Sutek's Scrolls|Scrolls]], [[Battle Supplies]] and [[Desert Arms]], and [[Qasalan Delights]]. There are also several [[Dailies|daily-events]], such as [[Coltzan's Shrine]], the [[Fruit Machine]], and the [[Lost Desert Scratchcard Kiosk]]. Other [[games]] in the Lost Desert include [[Tug of War]] and [[Swarm]].

==Yooyuball==
The Lost Desert's [[Altador Cup|Yooyuball]] team of 2006 had a lineup which could have done lots of damage in the tournament, but troubles in 2006 ([["Dirty" Navers]]' aggressive tactics and [[Derbi Azar]]'s holdout) made fans wary of them and if they would effectively play. They managed beat the [[Virtupets Space Station|Space Station]] in the first round, but were beaten by [[Roo Island]] in Round Two. When the time came to assign blame for the improbable loss, most of the criticism was aimed at defenseman [[Wyett Tuggins]], who was repeatedly put to shame by the brilliant play of Roo Island's [[Fenny Vail]]. As a result, journeyman [[Luvea Trivon]] took his place in the 2007 games. After a few uneventful years for Lost Desert their chance to shine came in 09' where they made it to the finals and placed third after being defeated by the eventual winners [[Krawk Island]], but being able to defeat the initial top seeds, [[Kreludor]]. They have placed third twice, in 2008 and 2009, and won in 2010 over Kreludor.

Here, he demanded his annual 'protection money' from the then King Koi, who refused to pay (giving reasons such as a 'poor Kelp Harvest'). From the tone of this conversation, it can be presumed that Captain Dread regularly came for this money. The whirlpool is believed to be the result of a curse from this Pirate. The whirlpool, said to be ten miles wide, lasted until the 31st May 2002, where is finally subsided to reveal the Ruins of Maraqua.

Maraqua once housed the Underwater [[Kitchen Quest]]s, later relocated to [[Mystery Island]], and was the sole supplier of [[Utility Fish]], which are now all retired and very expensive. [[TNT]] stated once that they originally planned for Utility Fish to be used as [[NeoHome]] utilities. Maraqua also sold Aquatic [[PetPet]]s (most of which were [[Old Neopets|redesigned]] and are being sold on Mystery Island). The Aquatic Foods Shop also disappeared, retiring the shop items, only to be replaced by [[Kelp]] in New Maraqua, with new foods.

After the whirlpool ruined the city, the Ruins began to be populated again, first by a gigantic [[Slug Monster]], then by a [http://www.neopets.com/water/statue.phtml Mysterious Statue] (believed to be of the [[Darkest Faerie]]), then by a Bubbling Pit (listing all the available Maraqua-coloured Neopets), then by an [[Underwater Fishing]] area. The discovery and open trade with New Maraqua has promoted people re-entering the ruins, and it remains to be seen whether more will be made of this area.

==New Maraqua==
After the whirlpool destroyed the original city, [[King Kelpbeard]] set about building a new, more splendid city, with a strong army to protect it from its enemies. However, information of this was learnt by an armada of pirates, who set out to [[Curse of Maraqua|conquer the nation]].

===History===
As part of the [[Curse of Maraqua]] plot, Maraqua was rebuilt with the intention of being stronger than its predecessor so as to withstand any future Pirate attacks. New Maraqua has a standing army lead by [[Swordmaster Talek]], something Old Maraqua didn't appear to have. When [[Captain Scarblade]] learned that there were surviving [[Maraquan]]s, he lead another attack (this time with an army of pirates). They were fought off, however, in the plot.

===Maractite===
The Curse of Maraqua plot introduced the mineral [[maractite]], capable of travelling effortlessly through water as though it was in air. Information provided in the CoM plot suggests that supplies of maractite are running thin. According to the ''Maractite Axe'' card (of the [[Neopets TCG]]), maractite slowly decays when exposed to air.

===Attractions of New Maraqua===
In addition to having shops selling [[Maractite Weaponry|maractite weaponry]] and [[furniture]], Maraqua is also the sole supplier of collectable [[Sea Shells]]. There is a shop selling Maraquan PetPets, although, interestingly, none of the PetPets that were sold in Old Maraqua and now Mystery Island are being sold.

The restaurant [[Kelp]], much like the [[Golden Dubloon]] on [[Krawk Island]], sells highly priced meals, and an avatar is obtainable from it. It is frequently very busy, making entering the restaurant difficult.

==Maraquan Architecture==
Visually, Old Maraqua's structure was very different from New Maraqua's. Old Maraqua was built out of ''transparashield'', and had the look of a futuristic ocean colony. The smooth, bubble-like windows seemed to imply that there was an atmosphere inside the buildings. New Maraqua has a very coral-like appearance, is made out of [[Maractite]], and is open to the oceans.

==Plot Replacements==
In the [[Curse of Maraqua]] plot, several replacements were made to the characters from the original destruction movie. [[Captain Dread]] was replaced with [[Captain Scarblade]], Captain Dread's unnamed sidekick [[Blumaroo]] was replaced with [[Benny the Blade]], [[King Koi]] was replaced with [[King Kelpbeard]], and ''The Revenge'' submarine with a boat of the same name.

The original destruction movie was removed after the Curse of Maraqua ([http://www.neopets.com/pirates/maraqua.phtml the page it was found on] now only redirects to the [http://www.neopets.com/aboutus.phtml About Us] page) due to these inconsistencies, but the movie file [http://images.neopets.com/pirates/maraqua.swf still exists] on the servers.

==Yooyuball==
Maraqua's [[Altador Cup|Yooyuball]] team could be described as "a house divided," due to the antics of their star forward. [[Elon Hughlis]] is more concerned with his personal accomplishments than actual wins and losses, making him a headache to the team. He looks down on his teammates who aren't as talented as him, and they endure him due to his tremendous ability. Maraqua would love to trade Hughlis to another team, but no other team would give them as equal a player in return.

After getting beaten in the first round of [[Altador Cup 2006]], fans thought Maraqua would cut its losses and get rid of Elon Hughlis. When it became apparent that Hughlis wasn't leaving, they decide to trade other foward, [[Jair Tollet]] for [[Roo Island]]'s [[Dayla]] (injured in preseason). Considering Hughlis insisted on scoring most of the team's goals, Maraqua decided having three defenders in the lineup worked best for them, adding hefty defence man [[Oten Runeu]] to their starting unit. As a result, Maraqua looked to have one of the toughest squads in Neopia to score against, later proved to be false after placing ninth and tenth in the following two cups.

However, in 09, even though Maraqua was defeated in the first match by [[Kiko Lake]], the team was able to win the second bracket, putting them in 5th place, a drastic improvement from their following years of 10th, 9th, and 10th.

In [[Altador Cup V]], the team was hyped about a lot. However, due to a tough series of matches where they had to face the top three teams; [[Lost Desert]], [[Kreludor]], and [[Darigan Citadel]] in a row, and not faring well against any of them, they dropped from a strong fifth at the end of round one, to a struggling eighth at the end of round two. However, In the Finals they shined once again, beating [[Meridell]] who were consistently placed in the top four before being slightly edged out near the end by [[Roo Island]], the defeating [[Virtupets Space Station]] to claim the same sport they claimed the year before, 5th.

Maraquan is one of the many [[The Rainbow Pool|colours]] that users can paint their [[Neopet|Neopets]] and [[Petpet|Petpets]]. Maraquan pets resemble underwater creatures, both real and mythological. The Maraquan colour for Neopets was released on June 17, 2003, and the Maraquan colour for Petpets was released on April 21, 2004.

The water in Maraqua is usually cold because the weather above the ocean has a very cool climate. It's wet and rains almost every day in the summer with occasional amounts of snow, and for the other seasons, the temperature is below 0 degrees almost every day.
