The Tombola is a free daily chance game on Mystery Island that was released on June 9, 2001. To play the game, the player chooses a ticket, and if it ends in a 0, 2, or 5 then they win a prize. Otherwise the player has lost, though they may still be given a consolation prize. Occasionally, the Tiki Tack Man, who runs the tombola, will run out of money, and will appeal to the Neopian Public for funds (usually approaching a million Neopoints) before he can resume allowing users to play.
Occasionally, even though the user hasn't drawn a winning ticket, the Tiki Tack Man will still give out a booby prize (originally, a booby prize would always be given out in the event of a losing ticket, but this was changed for unascertained reasons). This is usually a useless, or junk, item and up to 200 NP.

Colour is an attribute of a Neopet that affects its appearance. When a user creates a Neopet using the Create a Neopet feature, they can choose one of four basic colours for their new Neopet: Blue, Yellow, Green, or Red. After the Neopet has been created, the user can change the colour of their Neopets using one of several different methods detailed below. The colour of a Neopet is always displayed on that Neopet's pet page.

The term colour is also used in reference to Petpets; however, the mechanics by which Petpets change colour are quite different from those of Neopets. Since Petpets are items, changing the colour of a Petpet will change that Petpet into a completely different item. For example, if a user changes the colour of their Babaa to Blue, their Babaa item will become a Blue Babaa item. In order to change a coloured Petpet back into its original form, users have to change the colour of that Petpet back to the natural colour of its species. For example, to change the aforementioned Blue Babaa item back into a Babaa item, the user would have to change to the colour of the Babaa back to White, which is the natural colour of the Babaa species.

Not all Neopets and Petpets are available in every colour.

Changing a Neopet's colour
Paint Brushes
:Main Article: Paint Brush

The most common way to change a Neopet's colour is to paint it with a Paint Brush at the Rainbow Pool. To do this, a user must first have one or more Paint Brushes in their inventory. Next they must go to the Rainbow Pool main page, where they will be shown a picture of each of their Neopets. Beneath each Neopet, there will be a drop down box containing each of the Paint Brushes in the user's inventory that can be used on that particular Neopet. The user must then select their desired Paint Brush and click the submit button to paint their pet.

Morphing Potions
:Main Article: Morphing Potion
A morphing potion is a potion that will change the Neopet's species/colour to the specified Neopet in the potion's name. They are distributed at the Neopian Magic Shop. A potion that morphs a Neopet into a Mutant neopet is name a Transmogrification Potion.

Once a Neopet has drank a morphing potion, they acquire all the genes of the entitled species and/or colour, but can be transformed once more with a new potion, painted, or change by the Lab Ray.

Here are the Colours available via Morphing Potions:
Secret Laboratory
:Main Article: Secret Laboratory

There are nine map pieces you can get from a Random Event or from a user's store. When the lab ray is used on the selected pet it can raise or lower the Neopet's stats, change the gender, or change the species and/or colour of the selected pet. The Lab does have limitations: it can't zap Neopets into Baby, Pirate, Plushie, Quiguki, Royal, or Usuki.

Magma Pool
Magma Pool
When the Magma Pool is visited, your Neopet will change to a Magma Neopet. Unfortunately, there is a Magma Tonu blocking the entrance, and will not let you in, however, he might be dozing off on the job and you can pass by him.

Random Events
:Main Article: Random Event

Though they occur rarely, certain Random Events can change the colour of a user's Neopet. These Random Events will only change the colour of the user's active Neopet, and as of April 16, 2010, they will not affect unconverted Neopets.

There are currently five colour-changing Random Events. In the first of these events, a torrent of multi-coloured water falls on the user's Neopet and changes it to a random colour. In another, Boochi fires his ray gun at the user's Neopet and changes its colour to Baby. There is also a Random Event in which the colour of the user's Neopet spontaneously changes to Invisible. Lastly, there are two colour-changing Random Events that can only occur if the user's Neopet is unhappy. The first of these will turn the unhappy pet Blue and the other will turn it Red.

Magical Chia Pops
:Main Article: Magical Chia Pops
If your Chia eats one of these, the Chia will transform into a uniquely coloured Chia. Kikos can also be turned Chokato if they eat the Magical Chokato Chia Pop. Interestingly, while both Kikos and JubJubs can be zapped into Garlic, this colour does not exist for Chias at all. Also, if you want to make your JubJub or Kiko look like a pumpkin neopet, you would have to paint it with a Halloween Paint Brush

Magical Plushies
:Main Article: Plushies
Magical plushies are sold in the Plushie Palace along with regular plushies. Any Neopet plushie with the word "Magical" in it's name is considered a unique item that acts similar to a Morphing Potion and will actually change the pet that played with it into that named/coloured pet. The item is only good for one use and, after, the magic will be used up and the item will become a simple Green Kiko Plushie.

Here are the colours available from these items:
*Purple
*Rainbow
*Red
*Silver
width=250|
*Starry
*Yellow

Rainbow Fountain
:Main Article: Rainbow Fountain
The Rainbow Fountain was introduced to Neopets in 2001 as a reward for signing up with sponsors. Signing earned you coupons toward painting/changing your pet. There used to be no restriction of what species/colour your pet could be changed to, and the only colour exclusive to the Secret Laboratory was Robot. This sponsor program lasted for a month then shut down.

Years later it was brought back on Neopets and this time there were some restrictions on colours you could paint your pet. The fountain won't allow you to paint your pet MSP, Royal, Sponge, Ice, Usuki, Quiguki or Robot. Changing species was no longer an option. You must successfully finish a Quest for the Fountain Faerie.

There is an item called Flask of Rainbow Fountain Water. When utilized on your Neopet it will randomly paint it any colour available for that species.

Petpet Paint Brush
:Main Article: Petpet Paint Brush

These Paint Brushes are made for PetPets, even some secret laboratory Neopet colours are made in paint Brushes for PetPets. There are two exclusive colours like Dung and Black.

Petpet Laboratory
:Main Article: Petpet Laboratory
This area can be utilized by obtaining all nine pieces of the Petpet Laboratory Map, these can be obtained from Random Events. It can change the type, colour, level, name of the selected Petpet, or even make it disappear forever. Petpets who are targeted by the Petpet Lab ray are unable to be awarded by the Petpet Protection League, because they will see it as Petpet cruelty. If the petpet is removed from your Neopet, it will reverse the effects that are applied to the zapped PetPet.

Here are the colours available from these items:
width=250|
*Blue
*Cloud
*Gold
*Green
width=250|
*Purple
*Rainbow
*Red
*Silver
width=250|
*Starry

:This article is about the website. For the inhabitants of Neopia, see Neopet. For other uses, see Neopets (disambiguation).

Neopets is a digital pet gaming website founded on 15 November 1999. It is set in the world of Neopia, a planet where creatures called Neopets live. Players can create and adopt these Neopets, build and furnish a home for them, and earn currency by playing games in order to buy items. Neopets can be painted different colours and customised with different clothing.

The site is free to play, supported by banner advertising and sponsored games. However, users may sign up for Neopets Premium, introduced in 2004, for $7.99 per month, which hides the advertising and provides access to special features including access to beta versions of developing games. Additionally, in 2007, The Neopets Team introduced Neocash, which can be bought for real money and used in turn to buy special wearable items for Neopets. It functions as a separate economy: Neocash and Neocash items cannot be traded for Neopoints.

Company history
Development of Neopets began in 1997, with it finally being launched on 15 November 1999 by Adam Powell, University of Nottingham graduate, and Donna Williams. By Christmas, the website was receiving over 600,000 page views a day. By January they were seeking further investment, and Doug Dohring, who was experienced in market research, saw the website's potential and bought the company. After this, the company's offices moved from the UK to California, USA.

Neopets continued to expand both on and off the web: in November 2001, the company trialled merchandise at a few select stores in California, and the following year more merchandise became available in the USA through Limited Too shops. Merchandise was launched in the UK through Claire's Accessories. The Neopets Trading Card Game was launched in September 2003 and would continue until 2006.

In 2005, media company Viacom bought Neopets, reportedly for $160 million. The same year, Adam and Donna left The Neopets Team, the staff who are responsible for running the site and producing new content. In July 2008, Viacom branded Neopets a Nickelodeon Virtual World, and launched the spin-off site Petpet Park that October.

The website celebrated its one trillionth page view since its founding in 2011.

Gameplay
Players of the site must sign up for a free account. This allows them to own Neopets and participate in the world. Each account can own up to four Neopets, a shop, a gallery, and a Neohome each. A player may also sign up for up to four additional "side" accounts to own more Neopets, but they may not use these additional accounts to earn Neopoints. Players are expected to care for their Neopets, including feeding them, playing with them, and curing them of any diseases they may catch. Players can use the Quick Ref page to keep track of their Neopet's needs.

Basic care of Neopets can be learned from Neopets Jr., a simple version of the site catering to young players or those new to the website.

Neopets has its own functional economy. Players earn Neopoints primarily from playing games. These Neopoints can be used to purchase items. The main way new items enter the economy is when they are bought from NPC shops. Items can be sold between users in player-owned shops, and many users turn a profit from buying up cheap items, that have a high resell price, when shops restock. Items can be bartered for other items in the Trading Post or auctioned off at the Auction House. Some rarer items - such as paint brushes and Treasure Map pieces - are only given out by random events or as prizes from plots.

Plots are story lines that occur in the Neopets world. They often involve the release of new themed worlds, and users can follow the story and participate by solving puzzles or fighting in the Battledome - a game where trained Neopets are equipped and fight turn based battles against other competitors. They are the main means that events effecting the whole of Neopia transpire.

Players may set themselves other goals, including collecting certain items to display in a gallery, or filling their Stamp Album or Neodeck. They may train and arm their Neopet for the Battledome, seek to paint and customise their Neopet, or decorate their Neohome. The most well decorated Neohomes can be entered into the Neohome Spotlight, which awards trophies to the players with the best Neohomes. Other spotlights include the Art Gallery, to which the player may submit their drawings, the Poetry Contest, and the Gallery Spotlight. The website also operates weekly contests like the Lenny Conundrum and the Caption Contest.

The site also operates the Neopian Times, which publishes player authored stories, articles, and comics. It features an editorial where The Neopets Team answer players' questions.

Community
A large portion of the site is given over to community interactions. Users can view other users' profiles (called user look-ups) and their Neopets and trade with them. Players over the age of 13, or those under 13 who have returned a parental permission form - in accordance with the USA's Children's Online Privacy Protection Act - can send messages to each other, talk on the site's chat boards, and can form themed guilds with their friends.

Certain games, like the Battledome and Kacheekers, can be played with other players over the internet.

Rule breaking
The Neopets Team have several systems in place for dealing with rule breaking. Minor infractions may often receive a warning at the discretion of the staff, whereas repeated or more serious infractions can be dealt with by suspension: this prevents a user from accessing their account or anything associated with it - e.g. its Neopets, its Neopoints, its shop - until the suspension has elapsed. Suspensions can be issued for different lengths of time, and subsequent suspensions tend to be longer.

For very serious or continued rule breaking, the player can be frozen. This permanently locks the user out of their account, and any other user who searches for that player will just receive a message that the account in question is frozen. If a player believes they have been wrongly frozen, they can submit a frozen account ticket in the Help section to have the case reviewed and submit extra information about what happened. All the details of the account remain saved, so if the review finds in favour of the player the account can be restored in its entirety.

For rule breaking specifically relating to the Neoboards or contacting other players, a user may be silenced for a period of time. While silenced, they can still play the site but cannot communicate with other players at all, nor modify their user or pet look-ups.

None of these actions are carried out by automatic systems: an employee of Neopets reviews each case before acting.

Merchandise
Neopets produces a range of merchandise, including plushies, stickers, and stationary. The merchandise retails at many mainstream outlets such as Wal-Mart, Target, and Limited Too (of which was the first outlet of Neopets merchandise). There are also online retailers involved, such as 99dogs and Zazzle.

In September 2003, the Neopets Trading Card Game was published by Wizards of the Coast. The trading cards are a collectible card game based on characters and settings from the website. As well as being collected they can also be used in a two-player card game. In addition to the base set of cards, there have been nine expansions mostly set around the site's plots. The last expansion was released in 2006.

Several off-site video games have also been released, starting with Neopets: The Darkest Faerie in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 then Neopets: Petpet Adventures - The Wand of Wishing in 2006 for the PlayStation Portable. In 2008, Neopets Puzzle Adventure was released for the Nintendo DS, Wii, and PC, and in 2009, the Leapfrog Didj exclusive title Quizara's Curse was launched.

Between 2003 and 2008, Beckett Media published a bimonthly magazine called Neopets: The Official Magazine. Twenty six issues were published before the magazine was discontinued.

In 2005, it was reported that a Neopets film was in pre-production, but nothing has materialised.

Trivia
*A Google search feature was added to the basic Neopets search on November 21, 2006.
*Neopets was re-modeled on April 26, 2007

A User Lookup shows the stats of a specific player on Neopets. Can be customized by the user with different colors and images.

Contents
All the available contents of the User Lookup...

User Stats
These are items of the user lookup which cannot be edited, and must be shown at all times to all viewing users.

Name

The name associated with the user account name. Although designed to represent the users real name, it can be used for pseudonyms, general false names, etc should the user wish. On users who are under 13 without the correct form sent to the Neopets headquarters in compliance with COPPA regulations, the section is unmodifiable and reads 'none'.

Last Spotted

Shows when the user was last on Neopets. Lowest it can show is Under one day ago and highest up to a few hundred days. If too many days pass since the users last log-in (unknown how many days), the Last Spotted bar will display "A long, long time ago".

Gender

The gender of the user. This is a customisable feature which can be changed whenever the users chooses, making it easy for a user to confuse their true identity on the Neopets.

Country

The country the players account is stationed in. This is another customisable feature which can be changed at any time. One of the many known reasons for users to change this is to gain access to certain games, such as the Luck and Chance Games when Neopets blocked users of Australia from playing them, or for special offers available only to specific countries.

Started Playing

Shows the exact date when the user created the account. This is not necessarily when the user first joined Neopets, only when the specific account in question was created.

Shield

Visually indicates how long the user has been playing Neopets. Each shield is unique and is generally updated every month. One exception are the shields before 1-month old which go in order from Newbie to 3 days to 1, 2 and 3 weeks. The other special cases are the shields after 6 years which are updated every 6 months from then on. The oldest shield is currently 12 years.

Hobbies

Shows a collection of three hobbies the user enjoys. All choices that can be selected from a list of them below...

Some users have been known to show different hobby options than what can be chosen in the lists provided by Neopets. This is probably from special User Lookup coding the user created.

Shop

User Lookup of the Week
If a User Lookup is exceptionally well made, if may be featured in the User Lookup of the Week contest.

On April 27, 2007, Neopets released Neopets 2.0, a redesign of the website. The redisgn drastically changed the customizable HTML and CSS sections of the site, which included user lookups. Because of the changes, many user lookups appear broken and chaotic, including all the archived user lookups of the User Lookup of the Week contest. To fix this, for contest #116 starting May 2, 2007, all older entries were purged from the database.

User Trophy
Trophies are rewarded to players who have completed grand achievements in the game. These achievements cover a wide range of Neopets features: high scores in Games, winning competitions like the Poetry Contest or getting into the Art Gallery, participating in Plots, etc.

Site Event Trophies
Site Event Trophies may be war medals but can be trophies of achievement in any Plot. They are issued with different ranks depending on the user's participation in the plot, but they do not always have a different medal image per rank.

They appear on one's User Lookup, with the exception of certain pet-specific trophies (see below).

Site Feature Trophies
Site Feature Trophies are awarded for participation in certain site features. Each Defenders of Neopia series has its own series of these trophies, and the higher ones in each series replace the lower ones in the usual fashion. Each trophy signifies a win against one of the Defenders of Neopia challengers. Also among these is the Lutari Talisman.

Standard Trophies
Standard trophies are usually given out for gaining high scores in games, but can be given out for reaching a certain game stage, such as completing a game of Neoquest or having a winning caption in the Caption Competition. Standard trophies usually come in three types: gold, silver or bronze (in decreasing order of importance). There are some exceptions to this rule, for example the Invasion of Meridell trophies, which have four stages, and sometimes there is only one trophy for a certain activity, such as the Neopian Times or Beating Punchbag Bob.

Neopet Trophies
There are some trophies that may be awarded to Neopets themselves. These include third, second and first place Beauty Contest trophies if an owner's picture of the pet wins a Beauty Contest, the Faerie League key, Pet Spotlight award, or an Oldest trophy that some of the very first Neopets possess. These appear on a pet's lookup.

Other Trophies
Additionally, there is the Root canal trophy, awarded only to The Neopets Team staff members who have had root canal surgery.

There are certain trophies that are awarded only to a user's pet. These include third, second and first place Beauty Contest trophies, Faerie League Keys, and Pet Spotlight awards. These appear on a pet's lookup.

Trivia
*When a user submits their user lookup into the User Lookup of the Week contest, they do not need to resubmit into the contest. The Neopets Team will contact the user, and let them know if it's was rejected, placed on hold, accepted, etc. Resubmitting only puts the user at the very end of the list. Revealed in the the editorial of issue 239 of the Neopian Times.
*For User Lookup of the Week contest #116 (May 2, 2007), Neopets added a feature which showed how many more user lookups they needed to go for the contest.

Princess Amira is the oldest Aisha daughter of King Coltzan III and current ruler of Sakhmet. Her younger sister Princess Vyssa held the throne for her while she was away on political missions, and was the original inheritor of the throne, but because of Vyssa's young age, Amira took over in her stead.

Princess Amira is described as beautiful, elegant, cultured, and refined by those who know her personally, and enjoys exploring music and the arts. Amira finds her rule of Sakhmet to be boring and bothersome, due to the many suitors asking for her hand in marriage, and longs to be away from such a life and have excitement.
Lost Desert Plot
Lost Desert Plot
Jazan had tried to force Amira to marry him, but she denied. Many suitors had done this to her, and when she refused, Jazan added monsters (his creatures) to Sakhmet. When Prince Jazan continued making it worse for Sakhmet, Amira made her guards, including General Dacon, to save the people and keep them safely into the palace. After Jazan commanded Amira's servants to prepare a wedding, she almost married him, until Nabile and Jazan fell in love and married. Razul later on attacked Sakhmet, so Amira and Nabile had tried to escape the chaos.
Better Than You
Princess Amira has been a contestant on Better Than You once:
Trivia
*Amira's Neopedia article was released on July 4, 2005.
*The name "Amirah" itself means "princess", which might e a reference to Amira's status as a princess.
