Living on clouds on the upper levels of Neopia are the radiant Light Faeries. Devoted to the cause of good, they will rarely stray deep down to the lower levels. If a creature is noble and bold of heart, these magical sprites can grant him or her holy powers such as bless and restore. A light faerie also guards the Wheel of Excitement.
Uber Light Faeries will sometimes ask you for specific trading cards as a Faerie Quest; and will raise your Neopet's level upon completion.
Book of Ages - Chapter 3, The First to Rise
image:siyana.PNG|frame|Siyana's Book of Ages portrait
<blockquote>Long ago, when the Kingdom of Altador was little more than a whisper on King Altador's lips, the heroic legend of Siyana the light faerie arose. It is often said that through her actions alone, an entire village was saved from a most dreadful fate.<br><br>
During her travels, Siyana once stopped at a small, peaceful farming village. The locals were kind, gracious Neopets, so Siyana stayed in their village for many weeks, helping to keep their crops from frosting over in the chilly nights.<br><br>
One evening, after checking the crops, she spotted a shadowy form moving in the woods.<br><br>
Suspicious, Siyana grabbed a thick blanket to hide her light and trailed the stranger at a distance, deep into the woods, until he joined a group of bandits gathered around a campfire. She flew in as close as she dared and listened from a high branch.<br><br>
Image:Siyana BOA Image01.gif|left
"Well done, scout," said their leader. "Soon that village will be ours!" Siyana dropped the blanket and fled as quickly as she could. One of the bandits spotted her and fired an arrow. A terrible pain shot through her left wing, and she fell to the ground. Though she couldn't fly, the courageous faerie ran as swiftly as her legs would carry her, with the bandits in close pursuit.<br><br> Image:Siyana BOA Image02.gif|right
When she finally reached the village, Siyana was out of breath and could not shout to wake the villagers! Instead, she focused all of her light faerie power to glow as brightly as she could. Thinking the sun had risen, the villagers came outside, and saw the band of thieves approaching. They armed themselves and chased the bandits away for good.<br><br>
The villagers could hardly express their gratitude to the light faerie. One of the farmers, a Kacheek named Florin, told her that there was a noble Lupe she should perhaps meet. When she did, Siyana the light faerie came to be one of the founders of Altador.</blockquote>

Trivia
*A doll of Siyana was released in the Toy Shop on May 31, 2006.
*Siyana's Neopets TCG card is called Siyana of Talador, and Talador is the original name of the now present Altador. The first series of TCG cards were printed and released before the final decision of the name took place.

Treasure Maps is a collecting game released on February 29, 2000, where users are required to collect nine pieces of a map to find a buried treasure. Each actual map piece is an item, This means the pieces can be stolen, traded, sold, auctioned, turning into a Pile of Sludge, etc. Map pieces are acquired through a Random Event or bought through the Shop of a user who acquired it through a Random Event themselves.

Once used to obtain either a prize or access to a special service, depending on the map type, the nine pieces of each map are lost.
Rewards a random NP value (8,000-12,000), and access to the Petpet Lab ray. A Neopet's Petpet can be zapped by this once per day, which randomly (and semi-permanently) changes the following properties:
* Species of the Petpet
* Colour of the Petpet
* Level of the Petpet
* Name of the Petpet
* Make it disappear completely (small chance, but still possible)

Petpets who are zapped by the Petpet Lab ray are ineligible to be rewarded by the Petpet Protection League, as they deem it to be a cruel action against a Petpet.

Changes to the Petpet (other than complete destruction) can be reversed by unequipping it from the Neopet. This will reverse all changes, not just the most recent ones. The Petpet will be returned to its original form.

The first official 2006 Plot on Neopets, involving the most recent addition to the Neopets landscape - the city of Altador. Began in March 28, 2006 and ended June 2, 2006.

Plot Summary
spoiler
The plot began with a dark Hall of Heroes, a mostly empty Book of Ages, and an Altador with no recall of its own history. The gears to open the hall's ceiling and let in the light had seized shut, but with some oil the participant managed to set them working again. The participant discovered a staircase leading up to an observatory, and an astronomy club opened shortly after. Equipped with a telescope from the club, the night sky was open for observation.

A few days later, clues started to appear in parts of Altador, clues that showed a configuration of points, which conformed to the heavens. The participant searched the night sky for the constellations each clue pointed to, and after each one was identified, and Altador's history begins to return, piece by piece, as a chapter in the Book of Ages. There were total of 12 constellations, one for each of the founders of Altador.

During this, the archivist Lenny realises that his entire archive is devoid of history books. Realising that some potent magic must be hiding their past, suspicion begins to fall on each hero in turn.

These clues were put in place by Jerdana, the Protector. She and King Altador discovered a plot to erase Altador's history and replace it with a version where The Darkest Faerie founded the city, so as to eliminate resistance to her take over. In an attempt to save the city from the Betrayer, they blocked the citizens' memories, including their own, and The Darkest Faerie of her plan to change history. She laid down a complex magical puzzle for some determined soul to solve, someone who would not be effected by the memory spell and could question where the history had gone. Solving the final puzzle destroyed The Darkest Faerie's statue and restores the memories of the people of Altador.
Long ago, before the building of our great city, twelve heroes arose. Each was famous for different deeds of varying natures. The greatest of these heroes is the one whom we now know as King Altador. He, with the aid of the other heroes, founded our illustrious city by the sea.<br><br>
Before the Great Betrayal, the kingdom of Altador was one of the most glorious places in all Neopia. It was a centre of culture and greatly admired for its dignified citizens. Those blessed times were nearly lost when one of our own, who once called herself an ally and friend to the heroes, turned her heart to darkness and attempted to destroy the city. Only by Jerdana's magic were we saved, though our future remains uncertain.<br><br>
Within this tome you will find the recorded history of the twelve heroes and how they came to form the Kingdom of Altador. Protect this knowledge well, for it may be all that is left if Jerdana's magic fails and the betrayer succeeds....<br><br>
Epilogue - The Veiled Past<br>
The early years flew by for King Altador and his council, as the city began to take form. For hundreds of miles, Neopians from all over the countryside flocked to the budding city. Its twelve heroic rulers pledged that, together, they would form the greatest and most noble city to ever grace Neopia's landscape. Even King Altador himself, when he wasn't holding court, would help place stones and build walls side by side with the his subjects.<br><br>
These building sessions would often last late into the night, until the builders' torches had burned themselves out. The one who would one day come to be known as the Betrayer wished to use her magical powers to speed the process, but Altador simply shook his head each time she suggested it. "One appreciates a home far more when it is he who places its stones."<br><br>
The truth of his words was bourne out by the immaculate care that Altador's inhabitants took of the city when it was finally completed. No one threw trash to the ground, or marked upon a wall, as that would only serve to dishonour and defile what they had strived so hard to create.<br><br>
http://images.neopets.com/altador/book/epilogue_df_aa8d0886df.gif
Word spread of the magnificent city, and soon caravans began to arrive, bringing goods to be bartered for the amazing crops and fine products that the kingdom had started to produce. Within a few short years, the kingdom of Altador became known as a center of culture and enlightenment. Here, everyone could live out their lives in comfort and dignity.<br><br>
To insure that the glorious city survived the ages, Siyana, the First to Rise, blessed its mortal heroes with the gift of great longevity. Decades came and went, and Altador remained a shining beacon to those who wished for just rulers.<br><br>
Seeing that the kingdom was the envy of all others, the Betrayer suggested to Altador that Torakor and his soldiers be sent forth to unite all the other kingdoms under the Lupe's fair rule. Once again, Altador kindly denied her proposal. "Our army is a defensive one, not offensive. If I ordered Torakor to use the army to intimidate others into joining our kingdom, even if I thought that it would eventually be for their own good, I would be no better than the leader that Torakor once wisely stood against."<br><br>
Although the Betrayer hated having her ideas declined, she could only admit that Altador's wisdom was once again correct. Some feel that events such as these sowed the seeds for her future betrayal. In the meantime, however, the kingdom of Altador continued to prosper, until that fateful day....
Prizes
While there have been no prizes released yet, a recent editorial does promise users will be "mini-rewarded for [their] mini-efforts on the mini-plot", implying that the prizes may not be as grand as previous plots.

However, the same editorial says that the plot was intended to run long so many people would be able to participate, so when the prizes will be released is a matter of some debate.

One of these prizes is expected to be an Altador Plot Sidebar, not to be confused with the Altador Cup sidebar.

Weapons are items on Neopets that can be equipped to a Neopet and used in battle. Generally, the better a weapon is, the more expensive. There are rare cases however, like the Bone Club and Scarab Ring, when good items become very cheap for one reason or another.

pussy types

Weaponry Terms
Besides official weapon types, there are terms that battledomers often use to describe weapons.

Bomb

A bomb is a single use item that doesa large amount of damage. For most Neopians, these are snowballs. There are other bomb weapons too, such as muffins, Clockwork Grundos, the Honey Potion, and the Ghostkerbomb. Bombs are generally used after freezing an opponent to guarantee maximum damage.

Freezer

A freezer is an item that freezes an opponent. A freezing item is an important part of every serious battledomers set. Freezers guarantee a turn where the fight doesn't have to worry about defending and can focus on launching an all out, hopefully devastating attack. 100% freezers are highly prized and usually sell for millions of NP.

205.188.117.74: /* Something Has Happened! */

Random Events are unexpected occurrences while playing Neopets, they come in three (or four) varieties.
Types
Something Has Happened!
The most common random events are a small graphic that has these three words at the top. These events can be beneficial (such as finding poop or an item), neutral (such as having a draik fly overhead on the way to Krawk Island), or detrimental (ghosts stealing neopoints from you and putting them on the Money Tree.

Unlocking an avatar is a "something has happened" event, although these are not always random, since the means for obtaining avatars are widely known.
Local Events
A subset of the "something has happened" events are local events. These generally are neutral, and have a title like "Winter Random Event" or "Tyrannian Random Event," as they only happen in a specific world.

Battledome Challenger
One-player battledome challengers are unlocked randomly (although certain opponents can only be unlocked in specific ways).

Faerie Quests
Faeries give quests to players in a completely random fashion. The quests themselves are alike in that they require the player to purchase an item (which vanishes at the completion of the quest) without the use of the shop wizard. The exact types of items, as well as the rewards, depend on the faerie.
Maximizing
Random events are mostly beneficial and sought after. Players are always comparing the number and quality of their events. Their very nature makes them impossible to control, but some theories have emerged about how to increase the frequency of events.

Pet Care
Keep your pets well fed (bloated, but not beyond that) and make sure they stay "delighted!"

If you have a food shortage other than the Soup Faerie for poverty ridden players you can Eat For Free too.

To keep your pet happy have them play with plushies, toys, etc.

Sidebars
Some special Neopets Sidebars (like the birthday one, obtained and usable only on your birthday)
will increase the probability of receiving a random event.

Having a special sidebar though: does not guarantee that you will get more random events. It has been known for some people to get as many as 30 random events on their birthday while others only 5 or 6 (which is normal)

Generosity
Donate items to the Money Tree frequently. According to the Neopian Times editorial, issue 241 (mark four), donating money and items does not increase the likelihood of getting Random Events.

<div style="padding-left:25px;">
Technical Explanation and Background
Just after the Wishing Well was added there was a new wave of an idea spreading about the on line game world and the idea was KARMA. Digital Karma measured your diservingness of bonuses and Neopets and AAA were the first few to add this as a feature although they both were very defensive about telling the users that this had happened. Generous users started getting more "good" random events and although the exact formula is (of course) secret, it works like this:

*old: Number = Random_number(1 to 6); if Number = 6 do_random_event;
*new: Random_number(1 to 6) * Karma; if Number > 6 do_random_event;

It's doubtful the "NeoFormula" is quite as simple, but that is the principle. So the bigger your secret Karma score is the better...however each test/random (I'm not sure which) makes the Karma score slip back down...also time causes the Karma to decay too so you have to top it up.

As of yet the Karma system does not seem sensitive to value so donating 100 NP in 1 NP units would get you 100 lots of donation Karma. Karma also influences wishing well wishes (the original reason it was added).
</div>

Refresh
The more times you cause the screen to refresh, the more chances you have for a random event. Although a player can literally refresh the same page repeatedly, it is generally considered less boring to move about the site (preferably without using bookmarks, so that more screens are viewed). Playing non-flash games such as Pyramids and Neoquest also increase the chances. However, sometimes TNT reduces the chances of random events on these pages.

The reason this works is that you get a shot at a random event for the "world" you are in each page request (load) and refresh is a new page request. The best bet in this department is to simply explore and interact and get lots of usage out of the site.

*Game Type: Puzzles

How to play
In this game you are controlling the Juice-O-Matic, an overly complicated machine designed to deliver fresh Juppie Juice to Meepits. Click on the each pipe to rotate it clockwise so that there is a unbroken pipe between the Juppie Juice and the Meepits. Sometimes you will have to mix colours together to create a new one!

If a Meepit drinks Juppie Juice that is the same colour as them you get extra points (they are quite particular about what they drink). However, they will be satisfied with any colour. If a Meepit is not fed in time you will lose a life. Lose three lives and it's game over.

Werelupe

205.188.116.138:

Ferocious Lupes who live primarily in the Haunted woods and the Woods surrounding Meridell, but can also be found in the area surrounding Altador. Lupes can be painted Halloween to look like a werelupe, but Halloween lupes have different coloration of the eyes and fur, and are diffrent from Werelupes that appear in Plots in many areas.

Werelupe Anatomy
Werelupes are based off a combination of the mythical Werewolves of medival Europe , and the Wolf Man monster in horror films (Transforming at the Full Moon, terrorising villages, cursed bites, Etc.). Werelupes are bipedal, with a large chest and claws, Red or green eyes (depending on if the Lupe was Painted or is in a Plot), and fur rainging from Brown to black. Painted lupes always have brown fur and green eyes. All Werelupes somehow aquire clothes in there transformation, as they all wear torn jeans (presumably ruined by the transformation) and a rope belt (once again, this is a feature of painted lupes only). Werelupes are occasonaly drawn with shirts, but only in tcgs. Like all pets that are promently featured in art, they are subject to being altered by the Artist, if applicable. For example, the Werelupe King, Werelupe Sage, and Gnarfas all are drawn outside the paramaters of the basic template (Diffrent clothes, sizes, and extra arms). Werelupe Size also is radically different, although this may also be artistic license. Werelupes are much larger than other pets ( see the Haunted woods World challenge map) although in many drawings they are normal sized, which leads to the assumption they can alter their size.

Famous Werelupes
As is natural for being in Tcg sets and Games, a few werelupe celebrites have emerged.

* The Werelupe King, as his name indicates, is the ruler of all the Werelupes. According to his [[TCG]s flavor text, Werelupe society is combat based, meaning that if you can beat the current king, you inherit the throne. This naturally means that the king is the most powerful werelupe. However, he obtained his position through underhanded methods, and is known to do anything to gain an advantage, including attacking King Altador behind his back, or using magic provided be the sage (see below). The king serves the Darkest Faerie. It is unknown what happend to the werelupes he led after Tormund and Roberta defeated them, but it's safe to assume they will reemerge in a later plot. His claws are apparently used in [Werelupe Claw Necklaces]]
* The Werelupe Sage is the kings adviser and resident mage. Apparently, in a sceme for power, he used his magic to assist the king in taking the throne, and is the only one who knows who controls the werelupes. This impies he was one of the only of his kind aware of why they were hindering Tormund and Roberta. This should be implied in the game. Not much else is know about him, but he is apparently the power behind the throne.
*Gnarfas is a four armed werelupe, and is much larger than all of the others. He's also a Psychopath, and hs immense strength makes him a difficult foe. He is kept locked away, as evident by his chains, and is released by the Werelupe king to attack Tormund.
*Reginald(Unconfirmed, may not be a werelupe). Reginald is a rich neopian who lives in Neovia, and will make his debut in the Haunted Woods Plot. His friends have been placed under a curse, and in his tcg he is looking for a cure. Although it's not stated in a card that he is a werelupe, several hints imply that he is.
**His coloration is exactly the same as a werelupe's beaten pose.
**His Coloration in the card "Creeping Shadows" is identical to that of a painted werelupe
**Neovia is Located in the Haunted woods, and the curse placed on it causes resdince to become werelupe like, but not true Werelupes.
**He lives in a big scary mantion that has been seen in the "Howl in the night" Tcg, in which a werelupe is seen howling from the roof of his (or a similar) mansion.

Werelupe template
The Werelupe's popularity has caused it to be used in many Fan fictions, Neopedia articles, and Neopian Times submissons, as well as in Neopets: The Darkest Faerie. This section leads to a basic personaltiy template for a basic werelupe, excluding the anatomy, which was metioned earlier.

*Werelupes in Plots are typecast as the Villan, but can just as easily be a Hero. Becuase of this werelupes are considered Chaotic Neutral.
*Werelupes (of the plot variety, as a color does not grant any battledome bonuses) are naturally much larger and(or) stronger that other pets. They can tower over an average sized lupe, or be roughly the same size as one (Leading to the idea they can alter sizes), and in the Neopets: The Darkest Faerie game, they are strong enemies, capable of doing alot of damage. Also, Werelupe claws are used in a very powerful weapon.
*Being bitten by a werelupe may or may not cause a pet to become one. Many Fan fiction say that the main werelupe charcter was bitten early in the story, But in the game King Altador was bitten, and suffered no ill effects (possilby due to his immortality).
* Werelupes change every full moon, but can change forms of there own free will any other time, as illustrated by werelupes attacking in Neopets: The Darkest Faerie, when it clearly wasn't a full moon.
*Werelupes (of the painted variety) give you an Avatar If you own one.

They Were very promenent in Neopets: The Darkest Faerie.

King Altador is the ruler and founder of Altador, the kingdom that bears his name. A noble Lupe and hunter, he was was the original gatherer of the 12 heroes of Altador,

Whats this?

During the events of Neopets: The Darkest Faerie, he was refered to as The Old Knight by Tormund when he was about to be overwhelmed by theives within Meridell(was called so until finding his true name within the walls of Altador). When Tormund as feeling helpless at what to do during a time of danger for Meridell, it was Altador's words which gave him the courage to fight for the people, and not wait for others to tell him what to do.

During Tormund's fight with Gnarfas, Altador knocked the Werelupe to the ground from behind, saying they must escape the danger before it became to great, only too be attacked from behind himself by the Werelupe King.

Gave his sword to Tormund when he went to search the deep catacombs of Altador to release Jerdana from stone.

Altador Plot
With the resurfacing of Altador, it is shown the history of the city is lost. By finding constillations within the sky depicting the 12 heroes, more of the history of the city is remembered. Altador's constillation is The Hunter.

Neopets is a popular online virtual pet simulation game. The site was founded on November 15, 1999 by Adam Powell and Donna Williams, but the company was bought by Doug Dohring soon after being created. Currently it is owned by Viacom after a recent business transaction, valued at $160 million.

Neopets started out as a site for bored college students but quickly grew into a site for people of all ages (many adults play this site, some with children of their own), and is currently one of the most popular mainstream sites on the web. Users, called Neopians, care for their Neopets by feeding and playing with them. Users can also play games, trade, or play a mock stock market to earn Neopoints (NP), Neopian currency that can be used to purchase virtual items that interact with their Neopets. Neopoints may not be traded or sold for currency, and vice versa, though such actions have been attempted on Ebay and the like.

Although the company is based in the United States, its founders are Welsh and the site retains British English spellings. In addition to English, as of June 2005 the site is available translated (with varying degrees of completeness) into ten other languages: Dutch, Portuguese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese-simplified, Chinese-traditional, Japanese and Korean. Neopets Inc. also operates an Asian branch, which is partially owned by Green Dot Capital, a subsidiary of the investment vehicle of the Government of Singapore, Temasek Holdings.

As of July 2005, Neopets reports over 100 million accounts, and over 143 million pets (note that one user can have a maximum of 4 pets, and many users have several accounts). As of May 2005, a Neopets-affiliated video game producer cited about 35 million unique users, 11 million unique IP addresses per month, and 4 billion web page views per month. This producer also described 20% of the users as 18 or older, with the median of the remaining 80% at about 14. Updated statistics may be found on the Neopets "Pet Central" Page. However, there is some doubt over the veracity of these statistics (see "Controversy and criticism" below).

On June 20, 2005, Viacom stated that it had bought Neopets in a deal that has been valued at approximately $160 million (). According to Viacom, Dohring, the current CEO of Neopets, along with other Neopets senior managers, will continue to hold their positions after the acquisition has been completed. This has caused concern among players that various aspects of the site would change. Common fears include the website becoming "Pay to Play" or that the fantasy feel the site currently possesses would lessen. In fact, the addition of Premium accounts and additional, more intrusive advertising on the site seems to bear this out.

Basics
After creating an account, players can have up to four different pets. Multiple accounts (up to four, according to the rules) can be created in order to have more pets, but using these accounts to gain an unfair advantage is prohibited.

As of July 2005, there are 50 Neopet species available, with most being fictionalized versions of real animals. For example, the Nimmo is a stylized frog, the Blumaroo is kangaroo-like, and the Pteri is a bird-like species. There are also Neopets versions of popular fantasy creatures, such as dragons (Draiks) and unicorns (Unis). Users can customize their pets by selecting gender, colour (with initial choice of red, blue, yellow, or green for most Neopets, with the exception of the Grundo, which can initially be purple, brown or white, as well), personality, and name (which must be unique, that is, all Neopets must have names that are different from all other Neopets).

Players must care for and feed their pets (although Neopets will never die). They can also read books and battle each other in a Battledome in a style akin to popular Computer role-playing game|role-playing games such as Pokémon. Neglecting a Neopet will result in their unhappiness, which may have consequences such as turning blue.

Neopians can give their pets a different colour past the basic choices, such as purple and grey, if they purchase or find (in a rare event) a paint brush. Paint brushes can also change pets into different styles such as "Pirate" or "Royal". Some colours cannot be obtained from a paint brush. Robot, for instance, can only be achieved by using the Secret Laboratory. The Fountain Faerie can also paint a pet almost any colour, but first the player must complete a quest that is given randomly on rare occasions.

Neopians gain the Neopoints to care for their pets and purchase items primarily by playing games. Items are then purchased in either main shops, which are automatically restocked by the game, or in user-owned shops (which are maintained by many players as another way to earn Neopoints).

If a Neopian is caught breaking the rules as stated in the Neopets Terms and Conditions, their account will be "frozen". If an account is frozen, it means that the account is not at all accessible by the user. If wrongfully accused, there is a response form to contact Neopets. Unfortunately, the Neopets team does not always respond promptly, and may sometimes take up to a month or more to reply.

Neopets has announced a premium service, which gives some additional options.

Once Neopians become comfortable with the basics, they can begin spending their Neopoints on items beyond caring for their pets. Popular goals include obtaining [Paint brushe]s and other items which can change a pet into another colour (which, in the Neopets world, includes completely different styles). Petpets (pets for your pet) are also quite popular. There are even Petpetpets, small critters attached to a Petpet. Any of these goals can cost an enormous amount of Neopoints, and dedicated users will devote months to their acquisition.

Part of the reason why Neopets is so widely-used is that it is continually changing: new items, games, and plots (such as "Hannah and the Ice Caves" or "Curse of Maraqua") are introduced almost every day. The ability to amass large amounts of Neopoints and rare items is a challenge for competitive players, and someone who keeps up with the latest news has a greater chance of being the first one to obtain a rare item (and sell it before it drops in value) or to earn a top score in a new game.

Neopets has also installed "Neopets Jr.," a basic version of the site catering to those new to Neopets or to the very young.

Environment
See also: List of Neopian worlds

The entire game takes place on (or in orbit around) the fictional planet of Neopia. The main setting is Neopia Central, a city where the main stores are based. There are also different themed settings, called worlds: Tyrannia (prehistoric), Faerieland (fairy|faeries), the upcoming Altador (alternate faeries), Mystery Island (Polynesian), Haunted Woods (Halloween/spooky), Krawk Island (pirates), Lost Desert (Ancient Egypt|Ancient Egyptian), Terror Mountain (winter]]/Christmas), Virtupets Space Station (Space Station), Kreludor (moon), Meridell (medieval), and Brightvale (medieval with an emphasis on knowledge and enlightenment, à la the Renaissance).

There are also mini worlds and sub-worlds, such as Roo Island, Kiko Lake, and the newly added Lost City of Geraptiku. Each of these worlds (which are, in reality, more like regions or settings) has unique shops, games, and activities pertaining to its theme.

These worlds are generally introduced through in-game plots that involve their discovery or destruction. For example, Maraqua (underwater) was originally destroyed by Captain Dread and his pirates in one plotline, but has been rebuilt and reopened as a result of the "Curse of Maraqua" storyline.

There have also been hints of the other side of Neopia, since only one side of the planet is shown. It is believed this is where Jelly World and Talador are located. It is possible that it will be revealed in Winter 2005, as that is when the Jelly World video game will be released, which may lead to the release of Jelly World, and so on.

Gameplay
There are many activities a Neopets player can perform to advance towards a goal. They can train their pets to become fighters to participate in the occasional wars that occur, usually when new worlds are discovered. They can also become merchants, collecting and selling expensive items. People can also send in their drawings or stories and become known for their creative skills.

Most of the games on the site are divided into three categories: puzzle, action, and luck/chance.

Flash/Shockwave games
Most of the games on the site are Macromedia Flash or Macromedia Shockwave games, which require certain software to be installed on the player's computer. Many are similar to older games&mdash;for example, "Meerca Chase II" is very similar to Snake while "Korbat's Lab" is like Breakout.

The action games are arcade-like games. They include games like "Hannah and the Ice Caves," a multileveled game where you guide the characters Hannah and her sidekick Armin through increasingly difficult icy caves while collecting treasure and avoiding snow beasts. Puzzle games are games requiring some thought during gameplay. Luck/chance games include various slot machine games such as "Brucey B. Slots" and other gambling themed games.

Scores from these games may be sent three times a day, for up to 1,000 Neopoints per game, proportional to the score. Highly skilled users may earn a trophy or an avatar.

Other games
There are also numerous PHP games (which are more accessible to players with slower computers), such as "NeoQuest" and "Plushie Tycoon," as well as card games like "Pyramids" and "Scarab 21". NeoQuest and NeoQuest II are classic RPGs where players fight monsters and defeat villains. Plushie Tycoon allows the player to simulate running a business which sells Neopets plushies. Also in this category are a daily crossword ("Faerie Crossword"), a dice game ("Dice-a-roo"), and a version of Minesweeper, ("Neggsweeper").

Plots
Plots are presented in a comic book format which results in some kind of climax that players can participate in (such as a war or a series of puzzles). For those plots that have involved wars, players are sometimes given the option to choose a side to support. Fighters are given a series of enemies to fight in the battledome in order to gain points for their side, and "supporters" could collect items or play games instead of fighting. The Lost Desert Plot which began in September of 2005 did not have a war; players were instead invited to solve a complex series of puzzles to help save the day.

The Neopian arch-villain, Dr. Sloth, is prominently featured in several site-wide stories. His greatest achievements were the enslavement of the Grundos, an alien-like race, and his creation of the Transmogrification Potions, which change the appearance or species of a Neopet into a mutant version.

Collections
Many players choose to collect certain items&mdash;often those that are rare or expensive&mdash;and place them in a gallery. Other types of collections include virtual trading cards (not to be confused with actual TCG cards), stamps, and coins, all of which can be collected in albums. Neohomes can be bought for a certain number of Neopoints for each room, allowing players to collect items for their homes. Furniture may be placed in the Neohomes, and additional amenities (lights, insurance, etc.) can be purchased. The goal is usually to try to win a spotlight award or to show off items and collections.

Avatars
Avatars are icons that can be used on Neopian message boards. There are several default avatars which are provided to players automatically, and there are many secret avatars that can be collected. To find these, users must perform some task, such as getting a high score at a flash game, visiting a particular page, or equipping their pet with a special weapon. Some avatars may be very expensive, such as using a Nerkmid which can cost upwards of 80,000 NP, or obscure or difficult to obtain. There is a high score list, listing the users with the most avatars.

Writing and art contests
Neopets also offers different writing and art contests. One such example is the Neopian Times, a weekly newspaper that includes short stories, a question-and-answer editorial, comics (animated and traditional), story series, and articles. There is also a poetry contest which runs approximately twice a week and a continuing story contest where users submit the next part of a short story. Players can also contribute pictures of their pets for voting or display in a gallery or create their own levels of certain games.

Shops
In addition to the regular shops, every player can sell items at his or her own shop, sometimes at a profit. As in real life, the goal of dedicated sellers is to buy items for a low price (either at other player shops or at the game-run shops) and sell them for a high price. (There is also a trading post that can be used to trade expensive items and an auction house.) Buying items at the main Neopian shops in order to resell them is called restocking (since it involves waiting until the shop restocks) and can be very profitable for a player with luck and a fast internet connection.

Community
Neopets, throughout its past, has always had a community in which users can chat and contact each other, either by Neomail (on-site email) to send private messages or "Neoboards", the Internet forums, which are often treated more like chat rooms than internet forums.

As with all internet communities, there is possible danger in giving personal information to strangers. Therefore, players who register as under 13 must submit a document by fax or letter with a parent's signature to the website's address in order to access any of the site's communication features, in compliance with COPPA.

Guilds
Users with similar interests can create or join guilds, which are basically clubs. These usually have a theme, such as the "Faerie Guild" or the "Nimmo Lovers Guild." Guilds dedicated to certain causes, goals, or mutual interests such as helping the poorer Neopians and/or new players, collecting avatars, getting more Neopoints, or real life interests. There are forums inside of the guilds, only accessible to members of that group. Guilds may also offer certain advantages to members such a guild shops and lotteries to provide free food/items, "newbie packs", and helpful tips. Different guilds also have different requirements for advancing in rank, usually accompanied by the appropriate increase in benefits and status.

Neoboards
Another aspect of Neopets is the community that develops on the 24 Neoboards. Some of the more popular ones include:

*Avatars/Neosignatures: Discussions include the method of obtaining new avatars, help on obtaining avatars, designing a font compatible with certain avatars, scattered Font discussion, and games.
*Battledome: Many announcements regarding recent accomplishments in the battledome, due to the fact that it is the home of some of the wealthiest users and strongest pets. Usually, if there are any problems with hackers or with duplicated items, the members of this chat are the first ones affected.
*Evil Things and Monster Sightings: This board consists mostly of users identifying themselves as 'emo' or 'goth', and is typically used for general chat
*Fan Clubs:This board replaced General Chat in popularity upon its deletion and covers a range of topics.
*Help Chat/Newbie Chat: This is the place to go to get help using an account. Help Chat is more likely to be on topic.
*Trading Post/Auction:: the board consists mainly of people who spend their time trading for profits.
*Jelly World Chat: This board is "hidden", and how to access it is a well-known "secret".
*Roleplaying: The main purpose of this board is a venue for the players to roleplay.

Several regular players that are named "Moderators" moderate the board. Users can self-moderate as well, by reporting a message they deem unsuitable for Neopets. There is also a filter which prevents a user from using profanity or lewd conduct on the site.

Controversy and criticism
While some educators and parents affirm the value of Neopets as a place for children to learn the basics of things like supply and demand, economics, stocks, and even HTML, others criticize it for its liberal placement and promotion of their sponsors' products, a technique they have dubbed "Immersion Advertisement".

Much of the company's revenue is gained through promotion of sponsors and their products and they have long accomplished this without a single banner or pop-up advertisement. However, in October 2004, a considerable number of banners that link to external websites such as eBay (instead of linking to various areas on the Neopets website itself as they had previously) were introduced. These banners are displayed on many site pages in three places, one at the top of the page, one at the bottom, and the other on a sidebar, making avoidance of advertisements increasingly difficult. However, the creators of Neopets have promised never to allow pop-up ads on the site.

The primary method of advertising is still through creating items based on sponsor products (such as "Baby Bottle Pops", a real candy found in many American stores) or offering rare items, Neopoints, or, in one case, a special pet (the "Ice Bori") in return for signing up for sponsors' services. Neopets also features many games for sponsors, such as "The Incredibles Split-Shot".

While immersive advertising is doubtlessly effective, some believe this constitutes subliminal advertising and is therefore immoral, particularly considering the target demographic is children. Others disagree, pointing to the fact that not only are many of the sponsors' offers now grouped on one page and are somewhat avoidable, but that no user is ever required to sign up for these offers. Neopets claims these offers and sponsor ads are only to keep the site free.

The introduction of a premium service in which advertisements are removed and special gifts given for sign-up has also sparked controversy, with users stating that Neopets has started "selling Neopoints", something prohibited under the site's terms and conditions.

In October of 2004, while McDonald's Corporation was promoting Neopets plushies in their Happy Meals, a story on the Australian news show Today Tonight featured a nine-year-old boy claiming that the site requires one to gamble in order to receive enough Neopoints to feed one's Neopet, or else it is sent to an orphanage. While much of this is factually incorrect (gambling is not required, nor are pets ever sent to an orphanage if they are not fed), it is true that the website has a number of games of chance that are directly based on real-life games like blackjack, poker, and even lottery scratchcards. Neopets had prohibited users under the age of 13 to use most games that involve gambling.

This article sparked a nation-wide controversy as concerned parents voiced their complaints about the website, prompting McDonalds to pressure Neopets into temporarily blocking Australian accounts from accessing games of chance for the duration of the promotion, which ended on November 5th. When this happened, a flurry of complaints appeared on Neopets itself when even Australians able to legally gamble could not access any game of chance on the website. Complaints quickly died down after users realized that by merely changing the country setting on their user preferences the temporary ban could be bypassed.

Still others believe that the users of Neopets are poorly treated and considered nothing more than mere statistics, that the site has lost its friendliness over the years, and that the level of customer service has degraded considerably. Many users believe that the Neopets staff freeze accounts too often and without good reason; data from Yamipoli.com, which rates virtual pet sites, shows the frozen user amount is 45%. Users are allowed to report one another; some of these "reports" are not thoroughly checked and thus, unnecessary freezing occurs. Bugs and glitches on games can also account for some of these freezings.

Accounts are also often frozen because of the actions of someone else&mdash;other than the original account number&mdash;using the account. Because many Neopets players are young or relatively new to the Internet, they can be particularly vulnerable to "scams" that attempt to trick them into giving out their passwords.

Some dispute Neopets' registered users count, which has reached over 99 million, a figure Neopets often cites in promotional campaigns. A large percentage of these users are multiple secondary accounts owned by one person, frozen accounts or accounts no longer in use. Such accounts are never deleted, and even accounts that have not been accessed since the creation of the site linger. The actual number of active accounts is around 11 million and the number of individual users is almost certainly less than this.

It has also been rumoured that Neopets is closely affiliated with the controversial Church of Scientology through CEO Doug Dohring . The impact of his beliefs on the site itself is not apparent, though Dohring has been quoted as saying "Having used his technology in every business activity... Mr. Hubbard's organizational concepts are always with me" (according to the Hubbard College of Administration).

Groups of people believing that Neopets treats users poorly and who are also against the immersive advertising have formed anti-Neopets websites expressing their views. These groups have bought domain names for their movement, talked about their movement on the Neopets forums, and have even reported Neopets for what they believe to be potential copyright violations.

Neopets Premium
Neopets Premium is an extended version of the site, for which members pay $7.99 a month, or $69.95 a year. There are also different packs that include Premium such as dial up service. With this Premium membership, external ads are completely erased, and certain "perks" are added, such as bonus Neopoints, rare items, premium users only boards, webmail, more random events, and testing unreleased games. Some groups voice the opinion that the Neopets staff members are transferring some free features to Premium.

To go Premium, a player must first be invited by another Premium member. There is then a 15 day trial. There are even prizes (an avatar, sidebar, and trophy) for referring people to Premium who have remained after their trial has expired.

Merchandise
Neopets now produces a range of merchandise, including plushies, stickers, and hand-held video games. The merchandise retails at many mainstream outlets such as Wal-Mart, Target, and Limited Too. There are also exclusively online retailers involved, such as 99dogs.com, which was the first outlet for Neopets merchandise.

Bitch

In September 2003, Wizards of the Coast released the Neopets Trading Card Game, a collectible card game, based on the online characters and setting. It is distributed by card shops, as well as Wal-Mart and Target. To date, there have been six individual "sets" of cards (a base set and five expansions), with the sixth set recently released. Most of the card releases are associated with "plots," or stories, on the site. This is another controversial marketing move, which has at once managed to endear and estrange players from the site.

In 2004 Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced the upcoming release of Neopets: The Darkest Faerie, available for the PSone game consoles. However, in March 2005 they confirmed that they had already began remaking the game for the PS2.

In March 2005 it was confirmed that the Neopets team had also begun work on a Neopets film (which the creators of the site had kept secret from their own staff until it was confirmed). When informing the users of this, they also implied that there may be more than one Neopets film in the future (although, of course, this will depend entirely on the success of their first film).

Pop culture references
Aside from the fact that Neopets has its own vibrant user culture, there are many references in the site to movies, video games, and more. The List of references in Neopets article contains an extensive list of such references.
