A '''Neopet''' (from [[wikipedia:Ancient Greek|Ancient Greek]] ''[[wiktionary:νέος|νέος]]'' meaning "new", and "pet") is any one of 54 [[wikipedia:sentience|sentient]], [[wikipedia:sapience|sapient]] species of a virtual animals yet discovered to inhabit the world of [[Neopia]].

Players on the [[Neopets]] website can adopt, raise, and play with these creatures. While different types of Neopets are classified into different species, the Neopet community is not divided amongst species boundaries. They are capable of [[NeoHome|home building]], operating a [[wikipedia:market economy|market economy]] with [[Neopoints|currency]], building and utilising tools and technologies of a range of complexity, and complex social interaction. Neopets enjoy [[art gallery|art]], [[Altador Cup|sports]] and [[battledome|physical competition]], and [[games|play]].

Neopets are categorised into 54 different species. While the word ''species'' usually defines a group whose members can breed with each other to produce fertile offspring, different species of Neopets have been shown to have families with each other. Neopet species often varies wildly within a biological family (as ''Neovian Genealogy'' notes, "[[Skeith]] plus [[Zafara]] equals... [[Ixi]]?"). Any given Neopet may change into a different species through exposure to certain [[Morphing Potion|potions]], magical [[plushie]]s, or the [[Lab Ray]] while retaining the same essential identity. All species have two sexes.

The form of any given Neopet can change due to what [[colour]] it is painted. These changes can be as small as re-colouring a [[red]] Neopet [[blue]] to drastically changing a Neopet's biology - they may [[faerie (colour)|gain wings]], [[Maraquan|become aquatic]], or even [[robot|forgo organic bodies entirely]]. Except for the [[Grundo]], who can also begin as [[brown]], [[purple]], or [[white]], all Neopets begin coloured [[red]], [[blue]], [[yellow]], or [[green]]. Counterintuitively, Neopets do not begin life coloured as [[baby|babies]].

The primary means of altering a Neopet's colour is at the [[Rainbow Pool]] in [[Neopia Central]] with a [[paint brush]] or through the Lab Ray.

Neopets are vulnerable to a variety of [[disease]]s and some species are allergic to certain foods (for example, [[Kyrii]]s get Itchy Scratchies from anything with apple in it). Other species, by contrast, can eat non-food items, and may even do so spontaneously.

Neopets as owned by players do not die, despite the existence of [[Ghost]] Neopets, and can only be removed from the world if deleted for being given an inappropriate (e.g. profane) name, or if their current owner is [[frozen]].

===Origins===
It is unclear exactly how Neopets evolved. While the [[Tyrannian]] paint [[colour]] shows what seems to be less-evolved versions of Neopets (reminiscent of variously [[wikipedia:caveman|cavemen]], [[wikipedia:sabre-tooth cat|sabre-tooth cat]]s, etc) the [[Neopedia]] article on [[Dr. Frank Sloth]] suggests that Neopets began to come into existence from flashes of light. The presence of [[faerie]]s and faerie magic may explain the existence of Neopets, or they could have been brought to Neopia from other worlds by technologically superior powers. At least one species of Neopet, the [[Grundo]], was brought to Neopia this way.

==Characteristics==
Each individual Neopet has a name. Neopets taken by players have names that are unique amongst all the other Neopets on the website. Each individual also has other statistics that may be viewed by a player through the Quick Ref page - in the case of their own Neopets - or an a Neopet's [[look-up]]. Individuals also have a height, given in [[wikipedia:centimetre|centimetre]]s, and weight, given in [[wikipedia:pounds (weight)|pounds]]. A Neopet's weight can change in response to the foods it is fed.

Neopets can be trained to improve their strength, movement, defence, and hit points. While a Neopet's age is recorded, the main indicator of their experience is their level. Higher levels allow strength, movement, defence, and hit points to be trained to higher degrees. Strength, movement, and defence points can be trained by up to twice the points of a pets level, and hit points up to three times level. These statistics may be increased by [[random events]], [[Coltzan's Shrine]], or the Lab Ray to beyond these restrictions, however further training through the training schools - the [[Mystery Island Training School]], the [[Swashbuckling Academy]], and the [[Secret Ninja Training School]] - will not be possible until the Neopet's level is increased again.

A Neopet's level also effects what [[abilities|faerie and species abilities]] it can learn. These abilities, strength, movement (to a modest extent), defence and hit points come into play in the [[Battledome]]. Having a high level does not itself make a Neopet more powerful - it is only useful insofar as it means their other statistics can be trained higher.

Individuals also have a fishing skill score, which reflects its experience at [[Underwater Fishing]] and what types of fish it is capable of retrieving, and an [[Employment Agency]] rating, featuring their rank and completion statistics.

The intelligence statistic of a pet is influenced primarily by how many [[book]]s it has been read, and can affect which books it will be willing to read in the future.

===Personality===
When a Neopet is created, the owner is asked to describe its nature: what the Neopet most likes to do (e.g. gathering food or making friends) and how they typically react when meeting others (e.g. smile sweetly or run away). These attributes do not have any effect on gameplay. After creation, they could only be seen if the Neopet was [[Pound|put up for adoption]], however when the site was revamped in April 27, 2007, it was shown on the Neopet's look-up as well.

Pets that were created before this date all had their personalities set to gathering food and acting friendly while those that were created after show what their creator chose instead. [[The Neopets Team]] did acknowledge this glitch but have not fixed it yet.

===Likes and dislikes===
Neopets may reject certain items - this may include refusal to eat certain [[food]]s, play with certain [[toy]]s, or adopt certain Petpets. A Neopet's dislikes are based on his or her name. A Neopet will refuse to eat something, saying "Yuck! I'm not eating one of those!", if it has the same number of characters (including spaces) as that Neopet's name - for example, a Neopet called [[Thyassa]] will refuse to eat any food with a name seven characters long, such as a ''Bagguss''. He will eat foods with longer or shorter names, however.

This rule also governs what Petpets a Neopet will be willing to own - e.g. Thyassa would not accept a [[Magaral]]. If the Petpet was painted to change its name's length - for example, a [[Pirate]] Magaral - then the Neopet would accept it.

A Neopet will reject a toy to play with if its name is twice as long as their name, but will accept a toy with the name the same length.

One work around for Neopet dislikes is for the player to change the site language. Names of items in foreign languages may be different lengths and therefore not cause the Neopet to reject them. Once the Neopet has accepted the item the language can be changed back.

==Neopet care==
A Neopet's owner can care and provide for their Neopets. As well as [[Neopet Customisation|customising]] them with [[clothes]], accessories, and other paint colours, they can improve or lower their pet's mood through their actions, feed it, and cure it of diseases.

Users submit a short story or description (limited to 500 - 2500 words) of their Neopet of choice accompanied by a self-created drawing of the pet. Trophies for the spotlight began to be handed out on October 17, 2000 and are displayed on the pet's lookup.

The '''Altador Cup''' is a yearly gaming [[plot]] on [[Neopets]] which begins on June 1, and continues until the championship is finished. As a sporting event, eighteen teams as 2010 from the lands of [[Neopia]] gathered in [[Altador]] to compete in the sport of Yooyuball for the Altador Cup trophy. During the inaugural Altador Cup, the tournament took place between June 1, 2006 and August 4. During the second Altador Cup, the plot lasted from June 1, 2007 to July 9. The game played to win the Altador Cup is called '''Yooyuball'''. Gameplay appears to be based on [[Wikipedia:Jai_alai|jai alai]] and [[wikipedia:lacrosse|lacrosse]], where players carry a ball in a sling and charge down the field, trying to throw the ball into the other team's net to score a goal. The ball is actually a rolled up [[Petpet]] called a [[Yooyu]], a creature native to Altador. There are a variety of different Yooyus used in the game, which gives the sport an unpredictable twist, requiring a team to alter its strategy depending on the type of Yooyu currently in play.

Yooyuball plays as a [[Wikipedia:Adobe Flash|flash]] game, where users can play with use of the mouse and keyboard. Before each game of Yooyuball begins, users choose the formation they want their players to stand in and select which direction they would like to move the ball down the field. Using the mouse, users point at the player they want to move around, which will select the player. The selected player can be guided around the field using the mouse. When a player has possession of the ball, clicking the left mouse button throws the ball.

If a user wanted to deselect a player, they pressed the space bar or the ''S'' key. When none of the players were selected, they can clicked anywhere on the field to move the closest player to the position they clicked on. To toggle between players, users press the left and right arrow keys (or the ''A'' and ''D'' keys). Users can activate a player when toggling between them by pressing the space bar. Pressing the Shift key to moves players back to their starting positions.

A new rule was added on June 24, 2006, which would make the Yooyu jump from a ''Keeper's'' hands if it stayed there longer than 5 seconds. It is believed this was implemented because too many users were scoring a single goal then letting the ''Keeper'' hold onto the ball for the remainder of play, scoring an automatic win.

Between each goal, a cutscene is played, showing either the goal, the crowd, or - added in 2007 - the Yooyuball selection machines beneath the arena. While the cutscene is playing, game time is still used up, but a 'continue' button appears after a short delay allowing the user to skip most of the animation. An animation accompanies the introduction of each Yooyu to the field, also, but this can be skipped using the space bar.

Depending on what team the user joined, the Slushie Concession Stand would be the team's official slushie stand. Any given Neopet may change into a different species through exposure to certain [[Morphing Potion|potions]], magical [[plushie]]s, or the [[Lab Ray]] while retaining the same essential identity. The form of any given Neopet can change due to what [[colour]] it is painted. These changes can be as small as re-colouring a [[red]] Neopet [[blue]] to drastically changing a Neopet's biology - they may [[faerie (colour)|gain wings]], [[Maraquan|become aquatic]], or even [[robot|forgo organic bodies entirely]]. ==Characteristics==
Each individual Neopet has a name. Neopets taken by players have names that are unique amongst all the other Neopets on the website. Each individual also has other statistics that may be viewed by a player through the Quick Ref page - in the case of their own Neopets - or an a Neopet's [[look-up]]. Individuals also have a height, given in [[wikipedia:centimetre|centimetre]]s, and weight, given in [[wikipedia:pounds (weight)|pounds]]. A Neopet's weight can change in response to the foods it is fed.

Neopets can be trained to improve their strength, movement, defence, and hit points. While a Neopet's age is recorded, the main indicator of their experience is their level. Higher levels allow strength, movement, defence, and hit points to be trained to higher degrees. Strength, movement, and defence points can be trained by up to twice the points of a pets level, and hit points up to three times level. These statistics may be increased by [[random events]], [[Coltzan's Shrine]], or the Lab Ray to beyond these restrictions, however further training through the training schools - the [[Mystery Island Training School]], the [[Swashbuckling Academy]], and the [[Secret Ninja Training School]] - will not be possible until the Neopet's level is increased again.

A Neopet's level also effects what [[abilities|faerie and species abilities]] it can learn. These abilities, strength, movement (to a modest extent), defence and hit points come into play in the [[Battledome]]. Having a high level does not itself make a Neopet more powerful - it is only useful insofar as it means their other statistics can be trained higher.

Individuals also have a fishing skill score, which reflects its experience at [[Underwater Fishing]] and what types of fish it is capable of retrieving, and an [[Employment Agency]] rating, featuring their rank and completion statistics.

The intelligence statistic of a pet is influenced primarily by how many [[book]]s it has been read, and can affect which books it will be willing to read in the future.

===Personality===
When a Neopet is created, the owner is asked to describe its nature: what the Neopet most likes to do (e.g. gathering food or making friends) and how they typically react when meeting others (e.g. smile sweetly or run away). These attributes do not have any effect on gameplay. After creation, they could only be seen if the Neopet was [[Pound|put up for adoption]], however when the site was revamped in April 27, 2007, it was shown on the Neopet's look-up as well.

Pets that were created before this date all had their personalities set to gathering food and acting friendly while those that were created after show what their creator chose instead. [[The Neopets Team]] did acknowledge this glitch but have not fixed it yet.

===Likes and dislikes===
Neopets may reject certain items - this may include refusal to eat certain [[food]]s, play with certain [[toy]]s, or adopt certain Petpets. A Neopet's dislikes are based on his or her name. A Neopet will refuse to eat something, saying "Yuck! I'm not eating one of those!", if it has the same number of characters (including spaces) as that Neopet's name - for example, a Neopet called [[Thyassa]] will refuse to eat any food with a name seven characters long, such as a ''Bagguss''. He will eat foods with longer or shorter names, however.

This rule also governs what Petpets a Neopet will be willing to own - e.g. Thyassa would not accept a [[Magaral]]. If the Petpet was painted to change its name's length - for example, a [[Pirate]] Magaral - then the Neopet would accept it.

A Neopet will reject a toy to play with if its name is twice as long as their name, but will accept a toy with the name the same length.

One work around for Neopet dislikes is for the player to change the site language. Names of items in foreign languages may be different lengths and therefore not cause the Neopet to reject them. Once the Neopet has accepted the item the language can be changed back.

==Neopet care==
A Neopet's owner can care and provide for their Neopets. As well as [[Neopet Customisation|customising]] them with [[clothes]], accessories, and other paint colours, they can improve or lower their pet's mood through their actions, feed it, and cure it of diseases.

===Mood===
A Neopets mood, being happy or sad, is changed by user actions around the website. There are ten levels of happiness, from least to most happy:

If a Neopet happens to be [[Disease|sick]] when checking the Quick Ref page, its happiness will be lowered. It also lowers if the Neopet has had less than full hit points for extended periods of time.

There are three rare [[Random Event]]s that relate to an unhappy Neopet. These change a Neopet's [[colour]] to blue if really sad, or red if angry, or green if sick. The '''Defenders of Neopia''' are a team of [[wikipedia:superhero|superhero]]es lead by [[Judge Hog]] that foil the plots of [[Neopia]]n monsters and super[[villain]]s. Beginning on 31 May 2002, players were invited help the Defenders by beating certain villains in the [[Battledome]].

Each mission with the Defenders is introduced with a comic strip, and the player, as a new recruit of the Defenders, is sent out to find and beat that villain in the Battledome. The player must complete a mission before they can do the next one. Missions are released slowly over time and of increasing difficulty. Each mission completed earns the player an upgraded [[trophy]].

A second series was released on 12 April 2006, whose sequence of enemies can be battled concurrently to series one.

While [[Ginny]] was out on her new bike, the [[Pant Devil]] snuck up on her and stole it from her. Ginny went to Judge Hog for help in defeating the Pant Devil, who was soon after caught and defeated by someone within Defenders of Neopia, and Ginny's bike was returned.

====Neohome Nightmare====
A [[Chia]] and his [[Tigermouse]] named Squeaky move into a haunted [[Neohome]] at 131 Soup Alley in [[Neopia Central]]. Later that night, objects began floating into air and attacking them, and then the [[Ghost Lupe]] appeared, chasing them out of the Neohome. They ran to the Defenders of Neopia Headquarters to get help and soon after the Ghost Lupe was caught in a ghost trap.

====Kidnapped!====

As they enter, a [[Cave Chia]] spots them after they almost fall over an edge. Feeling they are being watched, the Aisha wants to leave, but the Kacheek insists on continuing. They are both caught by the Cave Chia and hung in a cage high above the ground. Televised news reports they have gone missing and Judge Hog calls forth the Defenders of Neopia, finding and capturing the Cave Chia, saving the Neopets.

====Meuka Attacks!====
[[Meuka]] was hungry and decided to explore after finding no [[food]] in the [[Haunted Woods]], finding a local village. Captain K was flying back from another successful mission when he noticed a small planetoid giving off life readings even though it has no atmosphere. He decides to investigate not knowing that this was all a trap set up by [[Commander Garoo]]. News of Captain K's kidnapping reaches the Defenders and they quickly set off to rescue him.

Unbeknownst to them, they are being spied by Tekkitu. The Masked Intruder finds a small hut in the vicinity and looks around. He find a wand that Judge Hog described as a "Mind Control Stick". Tekkitu shows up and snatches the wand away. He mind-controls the Masked Intruder and orders him to attack the Marvellous Stretchy Chia.

After Tekkitu is defeated, The Masked Intruder is released from the spell.

The [[Meerca Henchmen]] steal a [[Zafara]]'s backpack.

====Trick or Treat====
One [[Halloween]] night, deep in the [[Haunted Woods]], 3 Trick-or-Treaters decide to take a shortcut through the Woods. The DoN received a call for help from Neopia Central when [[Mr. Chuckles]] began to attack. Already on a path through there, Judge Hog went alone against Mr. Chuckles, whose weapons weren't effective against Judge Hog. Judge Hog mocked him as a wanna-be villain, and Mr. Chuckles retaliated with a flurry cream pies, which hit [[Neopian]]s and turn them into clowns under his control. They hold Judge Hog down as Mr. Chuckles knocks him unconscious. Judge hog wakes up hours later hanging upside-down, about to be fed to monstrous Noils in Chuckles hideout.

To find Mr. Chuckles, users had to first ask [[Sidney]], then [[Arnold]] and lastly [[Leeroy]] in order to find Mr. Chunkles' lair.

However, he can now be found by simply refreshing at the [[Coconut Shy]].

====Somewhere in the Lost Desert...====
The story opens up with a [[Mynci]] archeologist in an ancient tomb, about to complete his lifelong dream of finding a mysterious mummy. He opens the golden sarcophagus the mummy is in, revealing the main villain, [[Eyrieki]]. As the Mynci opens the lid, though, he notices an inscription which he reads. This causes Eyrieki to suddenly come to life, who promptly bursts out of the pyramid by smashing through a stone wall. Once he gets out, Eyrieki begins to cause havoc to market stands in [[Sakhmet]].

Back at the Defender's HQ, [[Judge Hog]] calls in [[Lightning Lenny]] and gives him the mission of taking down the undead Eyrie terrorizing Sakhmet. Lightning Lenny zooms off to the desert city after Judge Hog is finished talking to him, and confronts Eyrieki. The two fight for a short while before Lightning Lenny runs back to the tomb where Eyrieki was released to find an answer to defeat him for good. They eagerly approach the Chia, but, as they begin to talk, Kasuki Lu stomps past them and pushes his way to the hot dog cart, which he lifts up and shakes out the hot dogs. He breaks the stand and then heads toward the [[Battle Magic]] shop.

Meanwhile, [[Mammoth]] is helping some store owners move their stores. He gets a call from [[Judge Hog]], who informs him of Kasuki Lu's rampage. Mammoth expresses his disbelief, but agrees to go after the crazed Chia, despite the fact that he had been a childhood hero of his. Mammoth soon arrives at the place where Kasuki Lu is causing havoc and tries to talk some sense to him, which ultimately fails. They briefly wrestle against each other, and Mammoth prepares to punch Kasuki Lu. However, he hesitates, and Kasuki Lu takes advantage of it to toss Mammoth.

To get Kasuki Lu as a challenger, the user must buy the trading card 'Kasuki Lu' and refresh at their inventory page with it.
