108.2.211.246: /* Adoption through adoption agencies */

Adoption is the process in which a preexisting Neopet (as opposed to one made through Create a Neopet) is added to a user's account. There are two types of adoption. As a built-in site feature, Neopets who have been abandoned at the Neopian Pound can be adopted for a fee. Alternatively, users can choose to adopt Neopets from other users, foster parents, who advertise their Neopets as up for adoption. The latter method is an unofficial form of adoption which has been tentatively allowed by The Neopets Team.

Adoption through the Pound
The Neopian Pound can be found in the menu bar under Pet Central or on the Neopian Plaza map. The pink, leftmost door labeled "Adopt" leads to the adoption page. Three pets will appear at a time. Users must select the pet they wish to adopt, and a fee will be deducted from their on-hand neopoints. The exact price is determined by its characteristics (color, statistics, etc.).

Pets that are above level 2, are limited-edition species, or that have been painted with certain rare or expensive paintbrushes, cannot be adopted by any account younger than four months.

Adoption through adoption agencies
Adoption agencies can be run be one person or a group of people. These agencies house pets adopted from the pound or former permanent pets that are zapped in the lab and then adopted out to other users. The "foster parent" usually goes through an application period next where people send in applications for said pet. Some adoption agencies have guilds to help find support and advertise pets together. Some directories offer lists of agencies to help people find the right pet for them.

Types of Applications
Most foster parents request an application to help them know more about the applicant and how qualified he or she is. Some foster parents ask applicants to take a special pledge. Most require them to answer questions that involve their plans for the pet in the near future, character ideas, and whether or not they have been frozen before.

Neomail
Neomail applications are usually anywhere from 1-3 mail lengths long. They answer all the questions the foster parent asks briefly. Most foster parents specify that they prefer neomail applications, as they are short, sweet, and to the point.

Petpage
Petpage applications are more on the visual side of applying. People can showcase their coding, artwork, or writing with these. People also have no character limit, so they can explain more fully what their plans are. Usually petpage applications are set up like a normal petpage, as if the foster pet actually owned it, so that later, the owner can just make a few changes and keep it as the pet's page.

The legality of petpage applications has been at times questioned, so TNT's rules state that you must put a disclaimer that you were not forced to make an application for a pet buy their owner.

Quick Adoption Applications
"Quick Adoptions" are adoptions that are not as in-depth in the process of choosing an owner. In most situations the owner wants to move the pet to a new home quickly, so they ask for short one-to-two paragraph applications.

The Usul is a squirrel-like Neopet released on November 15, 1999 as one of the original Neopets on the site. Usuls are loyal and friendly pets who prefer to live in trees. During cold weather, Usuls are the first to share their food with friends. They also enjoy grooming, and are very proud of being Usuls (the default Usul petpage mentions "Usul Power!" several times).

The Usul began to receive large attention on June 7, 2001, with the release of Usuki Dolls and Usukiland, an item type and shop which focuses solely on Usul-type items. The Usul can also be painted the Usuki colour, which is unique to the Usul with the Usuki Paint Brush. Because of its affiliation with Usuki, the Usul is to date the most featured Neopet in all of the items in Neopets, with newer Usuki being added every year, including on August 20, the Annual Usuki Doll Convention. The name possibly comes from a mix of the words "usagi" (meaning rabbit in Japanese) and "squirrel".

In the Neopets Trading Card Game, Usuls are associated with the element of Earth.

Battledome
In the Battledome, Usuls have a 20% resistance to dark attacks. They are vulnerable to fire and water, receiving 20% more damage from each. They also have three species abilities:

*Usul Growl - Attack: 2 x Earth, 2 x Dark; Defence: none; available from level 1;
*Usul Glare - Attack: 2 - 3 x Fire, 2 - 3 x Dark; Defence: none; available from level 1;
*Usul Bite - Attack: 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available from level 1.

There are also fifteen pieces of equipment that can only be used by an Usul.

Colours
As of November 2010, Usuls can come in 50 different colours:

The Chomby is a shy, plant-eating Limited Edition Neopet reminiscent of an Apatosaurus and a Stegosaurus. Chombies come from Tyrannia, and first appeared on the site when Tyrannia was discovered on 21 March 2001. They were first available to adopt the following day.

The Chomby is a hefty Neopet - a single one can shake the ground on its own. The Maraquan Chomby is a reference to the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. In the Neopets Trading Card Game, they are associated with the element of light.

Battledome
In the Battledome, Chombies take 20% less damage from physical attacks, and 10% less damage from fire attacks. They also have six species abilities:

*Chomby Spin - Attack: 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available from level 1;
*Chomby Roar - Attack: 2 x Earth, 2 x Air; Defence: none; available from level 2;
*Chomby Stomp - Attack: 2 - 3 x Earth, 2 - 3 x Air; Defence: none; available from level 20;
*Chomby Scream - Attack: 2 x Air, 1 - 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available only on Chomby Day;
*Chomby Power Shield - Attack: none; Defence: 0 - 5 x Light; available only on Chomby Day;
*Chomby Slam - Attack: 2 x Earth, 2 x Physical; Defence: none; available only on Chomby Day;

There are also sixteen pieces of equipment that can only be used by Chombies.

Colours
As of March 2011, Chombies come in 49 different colours:
