You use -chan when it's someone younger than you. You use -san as a general kind-of formal term. -kun is the same as -san, but for males, I believe. -sama is for someone of a high rank (emporer, priest, etc.). At least that's what I read somewhere.

It all started way back in 2003. Or was it 2002? Ah, whatever. Anyway, we were talking about that chicken, everybody loved that wonderful chicken, what was his name... Error... no... Air Freshener... no, wasn't that... Windex? Ah, well, we had so much fun.
