Anything and everything goes in here... within reason.

Save for an awsome one.
But don't just save... Invest in a bond or whatever they are called where you come from. Here they are Canadian Savings Bonds.
Its great, because if your set on saving, your not going to spend it, so invest it and get a little extra. Sure you won't get much in a year, but maybe with 20 bucks or whatever you get you can get something funky.
...Or not, of course. Just what I would do.

If your current guitar is falling apart, go to a pawn shop and see if you can get a really cheap acoustic to last you for awhile. Walden's are pretty cheap and have beautiful sound (I will never play an acoustic that isn't a Walden) so I'd see if you could find one of those. Then save the rest of your money for an electric and an amp. ^_^

If you can find an acoustic one you really like, then get that. Otherwise, save up and get an electric. ^_^

Well, the idea of getting an electric is really cool, but I'm very impatient, and the thing I have now isn't in the best of condition (machine heads are rusting, wood is chipped, scratches everywhere, and some strange blue sticky substance stuck on the inside that isn't blutak).
So, I might follow some of the advice here, and get a good Acoustic - just plain ol acoustic, and save up for an electric later. I'm not very good at saving birthday money

Dude, pawn shop.
Get yourself a fender strat for 300 bucks easily, that'll last you YEARS and it's great for your level.
Even hendrix played a strat, so that's pretty "booty kicking".

I live in a house with an electric accoustic... what ever you do, if you get the electric one and the amp, PLEASE, PLEASE take into consideration the rest of the people living in your house! I live on the 3rd floor and my brother lives in the basement of our house and I can hear him loud and clear.
lol- its a good guitar though... but I'm a camp counsellor so theres nothin better than sitting around a fire with a normal, quiet acoustic. That would be my vote personally.

Save up for a better one.
I'm terrible at saving up for things though I'm too impatient
