Send me $800 and I'll tell you.
Where are you from that it costs so much?
CDN prices. (approximately)
Ipod shuffle is 129
mini - 275
20g - 379
etc.
These are hardly unaffordable pieces. One does not need be rich to get any of these.
I got mine used

And no problems thus far.
To me, that
is unaffordable. I'd have to really want an ipod to blow a entire paycheck on it. (The only Ipods they have in store here are $300 or $400 [I'm not entirely sure,] so technically, I'd have to wait for two paychecks in order to get one)
I have my
minidisc player, my mom paid $150 for it two years ago. It still works fine and I can put as many songs on as many minidiscs as I want. I can fit about 5 albums (depending on length of course) on one minidisc. The discs are small and compact, easy to carry around.
Chances are I'll never actually use all 20GBs that a ipod offers. Right now on my computer I have 1.38GBs of music. I've been collecting music on my computer for about a year and a half. So spending $300 to $400 for something I'll never use to its full capacity is stupid for me.
See? And that's a totally valid reason. I'm a huge music lover and collector and carry over 20gigs of music on my computer at the moment and buying a used ipod made sense for me. It's easier than trying to buy an external harddrive AND a large capacity mp3 player.
I think I mis-lead you a bit, I have about $900 worth of CDs in my room. (yes, actually bought not burnt) I'm a huge music fan too, I just don't have it all ripped on my computer. But I still wouldn't want to listen to all of them at once, and since I have my minidisc player, its stupid for me to buy a Ipod. Yes, sometimes its a hassle to put music on MDs (as my computer is slightly dinosaur-ish) but I've got around 10-12 full with music, and right now, thats enough for me.

I've had MD players but the ipod was a permanent/long term solution for me. My boyfrend, on the other hand, listens to an album for a week and then deletes it. I'm not the type

I just hate people who call me wasteful when it's really a hardware component for my computer. (Not that you did, you made a completely valid personal argument against an ipod)
Its stupid for people to buy Ipods just to have one because everyone else has one, its like "wow, look I have a ipod!" honestly, a regular mp3 player could do well enough for most people. Its like some of the guys...coming back from...someplace... they have loads of money, and they're just going to the movie section and picking up of all the new releases. They just want a big movie collection. I feel for all the guys who picked up Spongebob Squarepants without thinking.
But as you have a genuine use for a Ipod and the personal preference (wanting the option to listen to any of the 20 gigs at a time) I commend you. =)

**sits down**
I used to see no reason for me to have an iPod, until I actually sat down and looked at the product specs.
And then I started drooling...
A 4GB (1,000 songs) iPod Mini would be perfect for me. I'm addicted to my playlists. I currently have about 300 songs on my computer, and several CDs with more music I could add. Usually when I buy CDs I listen to them a lot when they're new, and then rip my favourite songs from them onto the PC to be played among other music in several playlists. And then the CDs mostly gathered dust.
If I had an iPod I'd probably end up putting all the music I could fit onto it, just so I'd have it in case I wanted it. Having it right at my fingertips would often be a lot more convenient with finding the CD and fumbling with it. I could easily just put all of my music onto the computer, but I can hardly carry it everywhere with me.
I do have a discman, but I can't really fit more than 18 or so songs on it. I had a bit of a panic when I had planned to burn a CD and then realized I had too many songs to fit on it, and I couldn't bear to split them up. It would just feel wrong XD.
And currently, since the price of iPods has dropped a bit, I'm quite more optimistic about realistically getting one.
Haha believe me, if I didn't have my minidisc player or it was on its last legs, I would be drooling right along with you.

Ipods do indeed have 'cool' value, and it
would be nice to have all my music stored in one spot.
But I have my minidisc player, and until that goes kaput, I will be happy with what I have. It works and I'm not about to toss it aside so I can go get something 'better' when what I have is good enough.
