Ian Thorpe's doing pretty well at the moment though - in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, if he was a country, he would have been 10th on the medal tally. Pretty impressive.

The record set by Spitz was 7... Phelps was up for 8 potentially, including relays. He got a Bronze medal in one relay, and Bronze in the 200m freestyle, losing out to Ian Thorpe and Pieter Van Den Hoogenband.

Phelps HAS to be tired, doing all those events. That probably has something to do with his performance lately. He started out pretty well, but after that, he's been getting bronze...

China's still in first place for the medal count. 16 medals, 10 which are gold. As of now, anyway.]

Phelps HAS to be tired, doing all those events. That probably has something to do with his performance lately. He started out pretty well, but after that, he's been getting bronze...

Well of course, I wasn't criticising, he's acheived medals in all his finals so far (picking up another gold today) which is obviously very good.

Nope, the most he can get is 6 Gold + 2 Bronze, and even that is pushing it.

The gymnastics are looking very good so far, I am more into the side of the gymnastic and aquatic side of the Olympics, and I can say that the diving has improved a great deal since last year, though I really can't say the same about the judging.

The Brazilian judge gave a 10.0 on a bent-kneed pike And for the MEXICAN one. Don't even get me started. Were they blind??

Okay, this is from the 1999 Guiness world records, but, it's the most recent I have:

Most Gold Medals

The record for the most individual gold medals by a male competitor in the Modern Games was 10, by Raymand Ewry (USA) in athletics from 1900-1908.

The record for the greatest number of individual gold medals ever won by a female competitor is secen, by Vera Caselavska Odlozil (Czechoslovakia) from 1964-1968

Swimmer Mark Spitz has (USA) has won a record seven golds, including 3 for relay, at a single celebration, at Munich, Germany, 1972.

The record for the greatest number of gold medlas won at an individual events at one celebration is five, by speed skater Eric Heiden (USA) at Lake Placid, New York, USA, in 1980 (Did Thorpe beat this last time?)

The greatest number of consecutive individual titles won in the same event is five by Steven Redgrave in the Men's Coxless Four Rowing. (Okay, it was outdated here, but I know the results.)

Ummm, Igg? I said that. I said that he's being unfairly criticized because he can no longer even equal Spitz's record. The kid's 19, and in 8 different events. Too much pressure was placed on him. And the Olympic record for the modst medals at one Games is 8, so Phelps can still tie that. The most recent numbers I have is that he currently has 3 golds and 2 bronzes. If he medals in his last 3 events, he ties the record.

I misread, I thought you said gold medals. My bad, sorry. Of course he can still get 8 individual medals, but they won't all be gold, it's still some feat.

Well, he was on the team that won the relay yesterday. I can't believe how close that one was! My nails were digging into the arms of my chair, I thought I was going to rip it to pieces.


Sad that womens team gymnastics went to Romania, and USA got the silver. I didn't agree with some of the scores USA got, some were really low. But hey, I'm not a judge lol

I still think Phelps' is awesome. And he comes from around where I live, too. He even coached some "aspiring swimmers". They were all in the news, all the girls saying how hot he was...all the boys saying how cool he was.

Hmmm... I only saw the USA vaulting and on the floor, but you have to remember their exercises are marked out of different scores. When the mazimum you can get is, for example, 9.5, a score of 9.125 or something isn't as bad as if the exercise were out of 9.7
I thought the judges were fair in the women's gymnastics, all in all. Elizabeth Tweddle perhaps deserved a 9.6 in the asymmetric bars, and I remember seeing a Japanese man on the vault get lower than he deserved, in mine and the commentator's opinion.
Romania are just in a class of their own when it comes to women's gymnastics. USA were good on the floor though.

Michael Phelps is still impressive, and he has youth on his side. He's still got at least a couple of chances to get those gold medals in future olympics. He's learning from the older types... online and on TV I've heard things like 'Thorpe just gave Michael Phelps a swimming lesson'.

Last I saw, Great Britain were going well in women's archery. Alison Williamson beat China's Ying He. I did feel sorry for Ying, she got red carded for a shot out of turn, and got a 0 for running out of time...it was all a bit of a mess and she was in tears...arrr.

Saw Nathan Robertson and Gail Emma defeat Denmark in the mixed doubles badminton semi final. They make a good team, but Nathan Robertson is definitely the standout player. He's one of the best smashers in the game.

I only got to see the vault and balance beam. Missed the floor because I had to take my dog out. But now that you said that about the scores, I guess you're right. I thought they were all marked out of a 10.00.

Stricter marking, scoring etc. makes getting a perfect 10 almost impossible. Bah.

My countries have been having a nice day of it.
For Great Britain, Alison Williamson got us Bronze in the archery. We also got a bronze in the K1 kayak slalom.
We were awarded Bronze in the Equestrianism, but apparently this has now been moved to silver. It's not been officially confirmed, but a German woman had a false start in the showjumping, pushing France into 1st and Great Britain into 2nd. If this is indeed correct, it will also affect the individual standings of our two competitors in that.
We also got a very nice bronze last night in the Men's 200m butterfly.

My other country (:P) is Hungary. We got a very impressive silver medal in the men's 200m breaststroke, which was got by Daniel Gyulta. This guy's only 15- he's the youngest olympic medal winner in the pool ever. He's actually too young for the World Junior Championships.

Have been watching some more swimming...I saw the semifinals of the women's 100m freestyle, and Australian Jodie Henry gave an amazing performance. Smashed the World Record by 14 hundreths of a second. She looks good for the final, neh?
Great Britain's James Goddard looked excellent in qualifying, dropping his field in the men's 200m backstroke. In the semi finals there was almost a repeat performance, just a tighter finish. He set a new British and Commonwealth Record, and again left the field behind, going off fast and kicking again for the last 30 metres or so. However he's going to have to work hard for the final.
And another GB guy, Gregor Tait also got through to the Backstroke final. He was the previous British record holder and finished 3rd in his heat. Hopefully we'll get a British medal out of that event!
