Wireless connection

Tue Nov 02, 2004 3:56 am

I want to connect to the internet in my car. How can I do this. I am installing a laptop in there this weekend and want to have everything set up before I do that.

your joking right? are you willing to spend another $40+ a month on a satellite connection?

I guess if you have a cell phone with bluetooth and a bluetooth adapter for you laptop then it would be cheaper but way slower...

another solution is to pay a lot for a 100kb connection from verizon (its available in the Los Angeles area for sure but i have no clue where you live). Maybe you could look into something like that.

Sorry if im way off but its kinda expensive to have internet on the go. Also in the US (most states) its illegal to drive with something like that in the front (when its turned on), so would you just park the car to use the internet? IMO its pointless to have internet in a car cuz cars are for driving....

The comp is in there for some tuning reasons and enjoyment. It is actually placed in the middle of the two front seats which classifies it as a back seat monitor which makes it perfectly legal. One of the reasons I want it is for driving directions and aim and stuff. Then I am going to try and make it my mobile media line instead of having a head unit with speakers and all, just run everything off the LPT.
I live in Louisiana so theres not much cahnce of many options. I guess I can look into satelitte, but where? Anyone know where you can get it from?
I know there was a way mentioned sometime ago on another forum about tapping into wireless modems and stuff at peoples houses, but I would think it was illegel, but there should be some way other then just your normal satelittle and phone options...

The only conventional way to get wireless internet from your car laptop is to park your car in front of a house that has an unprotected wireless network and use their bandwidth.

Wideband cellular operators (3/3G) claim speed close to broadband, but that's all the way here on another continent.

Yeah aren't there like hot spot detectors as well? That way you can detect where there is a wireless network in range of your PC or something...
