Computer Sound Problems

Fri Jun 17, 2005 6:28 pm

This is sort of hard to explain but I'll try my best here. I put a DVD in the computer and Intervideo WinDVD or something similar opens up. It starts to play the movie. Everything goes fine until the image and sound starts to skip (note that most of my DVDs are kept in cases and so have little to no scratches on them). Usually when this happens the entire sound system on my computer is muted. I try to turn the volume up higher and uncheck the mute option but to no avail. The only way to turn the sound back on is to restart the computer.
After this happens, when I try to press the play button on-- for example-- Winamp, the music file simply will not start for me.
This seems to happen a lot but what could be causing this?

first of all what operating system are you using and what are your hardware specs...

I'm using a 2002 Windows XP Home Edition with 1.99 GHz and
512 MB of RAM.

Sounds like a DVD should run well on your computer (I think my one computer has similar specs, and it plays them fine). Have you tried different DVD players? Sometimes something like PowerDVD comes with the DVD you want to watch, sometimes you have to buy it. Either way, try changing players and see what happens.

It could even be as simple as your drive needing cleaning, too. Go to an electronics store and buy one of those specially designed cleaning discs, use it, and see if that helps.
