I've read an abridged version of it. The ending is quite surprising and the whole book has an aura of creepiness and gothicity (is there such a word?).

Whee, I'm not the only Sherlock Holmes fan. My favorite series before HP came along...:) It's a looongg story, but there was a Sherlock Holmes You-Solve-The-Mystery interactive exhibit at the local children's musuem and I went. I was the first to solve it. 2 weeks later, at the school book fair:
BoyInMyClass: Hey, it's a Sherlock Holmes book!
Me: (from halfway across library) *runs over* GIMMIE THAT! *grabs another copy from the shelf* *buys*
Me: *becomes hooked*

Incedently, aforementioned book was HotB...

I read a translation, and some of the original text from gutenberg. It's fun... but not too fun.

I attempted the first few pages when I was eight  Maybe it was just too difficult for me at that time, because I put it down with my head hurting. A lot of complicated guessing was going on is just about what I can remember.

I read it for English class at the beginning of the year. It was quite good, but the movie we saw of it was exceedingly creepy.

I remember reading it when I was about 10. Some of the Sherlock Holmes stories I had read before didn't always seemed so well planned, but I thought this one was the best one I had read so far at that time. I still think it was pretty well-written. I really loved that book and was a bit obssessed about it at the time. The mystery was just so good ... But I'm no detective and still fail to solve a mystery before I read the ending. :P

I forgot I had even posted this.

Anyway, I finished the book - yes it took a long time - the teacher told us to read 2 chapters a day on block scheduling. It was pretty good. Didn't know that the guy did it until the very end. :P

I loved Hound of the Baskervilles, but I think he really shines in some of the short stories. I think those kinds of mysteries are better suited to the short story format.

My mom had a huge book with all of the short stories and novels (I think there were two...?) I was reading that constantly for weeks,I loved it!

Yeah.....some of Doyle's short stories even creep me out. XD

After reading the one about the "Speckled Band" I had a hard time sleeping because I was wondering if anything was lurking in the ventilation system. :P

But my favorite is "The Dying Detective." Holmes was quite a genius in that one. :)
