Help to Find an Anime that I Should Watch Next

Tue Sep 13, 2005 2:00 pm

Hello all!

I regularly watch anime, but am having a bit of trouble deciding what to watch next. The main reason for this is I do not like angst (spoiler) (ie I just watched Chrno Cross and had it totally ruined for me by the ending) and while I have watched things like X, FMA etc, I've never enjoyed them as much as other anime with a lighter tone (Azumanga Daioh, Kodomo no Omacha, etc).

So, I'd like some help with what anime I should look at next! Any suggestion will be considered and researched. ^.^

I'd recommend the Prince of Tennis/Tennis no Ohjisama ^.^ It's very good, cool, hilarious and not a bit angsty =D

Hmm...The following lighthearted anime I'm going to suggest you've probably already seen, but just in case:

Sailor Moon - A fantastic fluff anime. Oh sure, it's got it's deep moments, but usually, it's fluff. It's a sentimental favorite for me, as it was my first anime.

The Adventures of Mini-Goddess - These are tiny 8 minute episodes. It helps if you've seen the Ah! My Goddess OAV series or movie to be familiar with the characters, but it also stands alone very well. It's just about the cute 'adventures' of Urd and Skuld (Belldandy rarely appears) when they decide to shrink themselves for fun. They spend most of their time hanging out with Gan-chan, a rat.

Kiki's Delivery Service - I'll admit, I've only seen this once, only dubbed, and about 6 years ago. But I remember it being sweet and charming.

Marmalade Boy - It's a romantic comedy that's quite sweet. I haven't seen all of it, but I've liked what I've seen.

His and Hers - (see Marmalade Boy)

There are others that tend to get a bit darker/deeper than the above, but still have a lot of lightheartedness, particularly in the early episodes:

Fushigi Yuugi - For a large chunk of this series, it's very cutesy and fun. And then it gets angsty...but that's what I liked best. ^_^v

Magic Knight Rayearth - This is pretty much mahou shoujo action with a lot of time spent in 'chibi' forms. It's pretty lighthearted throughout, although the last couple of episodes get angsty. Stay away from the second season unless you love the first season. Also, avoid the OAVs. I've heard they're messed up.

Revolutionary Girl Utena - My absolute favorite anime. Lots of fun filler episodes. However, the underlying plot and symbolism is much deeper and darker than it appears. However, you still might have fun with it.

I very much recommend this as well, and the dub was excellent. Kirsten Dunst and Phil Hartman, and just about everyone else for that matter, did an exceptional job.

I also recommend Voices of a Distant Star. It's a lovely short story that the writer did about 99% of the work for adapting it to film and did such a great job that it may be hard to believe he didn't have a crew to help him.

One Piece - the subs if you can find them, the dub is deplorable
Gokujou Seitokai - You'll like it if you're a fan of Azumanga Daioh
Gravitation - pretty decent drama
BECK - if you're a fan of rock music, or are in a band; this will be very close to your heart
Serial Experiments Lain - only watch if you're ready for hours and hours of figuring out what's going on =P
Prince of Tennis - prodigies in action! >D
BUZZER BEATER - if you like prince of tennis/basketball
Tsubasa Chronicle - If you're a fan of CLAMP
Onegai Sensei/Onegai Twins - really strange ^^
Love Hina - a classic boy-somehow-ends-up-living-with-beautiful women anime
AIR TV - A really emotional, though really good anime

Chobits might not be a bad idea either. It's relatively angst free. Although I had some difficulty getting through the first 4 episodes (ditto for Love Hina, actually). But, once I did, it was a light-hearted, enjoyable little show.

If you don't mind a bit more action, but with a lot of good humor, Saber Marionette J is pretty fun as well.

I would have to recommend:

Midori no Hibi - Guys hand gets replaced with a girl XD
Onegai Techer/Twins - 'I married my teacher'
Love Hina - One of the shows you have to watch
He is my Master - Funny and perverted :P
Excel Saga - You must watch >=O
Those who Hunt Elves - Very funny
Furi Kuri - Odd.

Mahou Sensei Negima - I think all episodes (except 23) are subbed, it's about a little magician teaching a massive class of girls (that blatently cover every anime sterotype).
Pani Poni Dash - It's like Azumanga but more demented, only 5 episodes subbed
Gakuen Alice - Amusing show (only 13 episodes subbed)

Excel Saga
Ranma 1/2 (oldie, but goodie)
Scrapped Princess
Last Exile
Wolf's Rain

There's so many that it's hard to pick a few, but these are pretty solid shows.

I have to say that, if you don't like angst, Marmalade Boy is probably not for you. It's a good story, and I enjoyed it, but it's full of teenage angst.
