Ah, I just watched the first episode of Alien 9 tonight. It's pretty cute so far. I heard the ending left a lot to be desired, though.

If you still want some suggestions:

Boogiepop Phantom is a series, and can be spooky but is also a bit confusing and boring.

Any of the Mermaid Saga (Scar, etc.,) by Rumiko Takahashi (creator of Ranma 1/2) would be good, too.

I second Vampire Princess Miyu, as well. It is a very good series, and has some great atmosphere.

I wish I could think of other series, but my mind has gone blank.

Are those appropriate for children, though? I mean, they can watch older things, but I don't think they're ready for Boogiepop yet. ;) I haven't seen Mermaid Saga or Miyu yet, but we have the Miyu manga. The art is just gorgeous. :)

I suppose it would depend on how mature you consider them. The Mermaid Saga is about a young man who eats some mermaid flesh, and then becomes immortal. There are some monsters, and people try to kill him in one. It's kinda scary, and a bit violent. I don't remember Miyu being too violent and definatly not full of sex, but it has been a while since I saw it.
