I love Portishead and Massive Attack. My dance solo was to Teardrop. <3

I'm too lazy to be majorly into the indie scene as many of the bands you have to really search for. I love listening to unsigned bands though. Two of my favourites are Loose Joints and One Man Down. <3

Anyway, some indie artists I like are:

Head Automatica
The Pink Spiders
Imogen Heap
Frou Frou
Stars
Belle & Sebastian

and even though they may not count, I adore the Smiths!

I may check out a few of the bands listed here, especially Broken Social Scene.

If some of these aren't indie in your opinion, then oh well. :/

The Dresden Dolls
Frou Frou
Imogen Heap
Iron and Wine
Le Tigre
Ok Go
The Postal Service

Eh, I need to go listen to more indie music. XD

Dude, as much as I love Radiohead, they're not indie. Sorry to inform you, but they're signed to a major label and have been for the longest time. ;)

Just to name a few bands I enjoy:

The Appleseed Cast
Badly Drawn Boy
Belle and Sebastian
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Cursive
Death Cab for Cutie (debatable, I guess)
The Decemberists
Explosions in the Sky
The Flaming Lips
Guster
Jets to Brazil
M83
The Magnetic Fields
McLusky
The Microphones
My Bloody Valentine
The Most Serene Republic
Mogwai
The Murdocks
Neutral Milk Hotel
Okkervil River
Pavement
Pedro the Lion
Planes Mistaken for Stars
The Postal Service
Preston School of Industry
Ride
Rilo Kiley
Shout Out Louds
Sonic Youth
Sparklehorse
Stars
Stellastarr*
The Unicorns
Wolf Parade
Yo La Tengo
Youth Group

And it's also good to see that someone out there listens to Hum!

TEardrop is my favourite Massive Attack song. I like the instrumental version that's the theme tune to House too.

Le Tigre rock! Though I never understood if the boy in their pictures was actually in the band or not.

I don't think I, or several of us, mentioned teenybopper bands. Read the thread.

Regina Spektor is awesome, so I know you're not an idiot.

Are you for real?

I'd say the 349730635706735 people who bang on about them on Myspace while making sure their fringe still covers their left eye do a fair bit of plugging. As do TV adverts.
They don't NEED a huge marketing scheme because they have it in spades with all the kids who listen to them and think they're cool...

Hahaha I love you

Disclaimer: some of these aren't well-known in my area. Therefore I am not a very good judge of indie-ness

Finch (not together, I know, but whatever)
Straylight Run
Thrice
Boink
Catch 22
Brand New
Jethro Tull
Seems So Bright
Dashboard Confessional

*shameless promotion*
Small Town Hope
I saw them this weekend, and they're really good. They're also from (relatively) near me.

I'm going to add a few more indie bands to my list:
Gym Class Heros
The Sounds
Cobra Starship
