Good Borders

Anyone know any certain ways of making borders more exciting then just 4 lines?

eRr... you can drop shadow your banners. I have PSP and I don't know what you have, but I have a Drop Shadow option that could be used for text, banners, anything.

The drop shadow gives a soft, almost glowing border to a banner.

And you can try a .... *thinks* I don't know what it's called, but you can select your whole banner and the moving black and white selection lines should appear as the border of your banner, right? Then Print Screen the banner and then crop it out with the new border. ^^

What graphics program are you using? That'll help people give you some more specific tips...

Um, something I like to do is play with pixel borders. In Paint, PSP or PS, you can zoom in to a pixel level and draw interesting pixel patterns... which can make interesting borders (cutouts, rounded corners, etc). Knowing how to use transparency would help here, too.

These might look a bit outdated now, but... I made these by playing around with pixel-patterns, and also using transparency:

(If you copy and paste one of those into your graphics program and zoom in on it, you can see how the pixels make the illusion of curves)

All clever idea's, but I'm using paint and Flash 5.0, and they aren't all that... profetional. I need to get photoshop...

Do NOT diss teh Paint..

I use Paint for my graphics as well, and for the most part I stick with a traditional 1-3 line border. If I really feelt like it though I'll zoom in and use mah 1337 pixel skillz to draw something interesting.

Keltic Knots are also fun, and you don't need to have transparency abilities to make them work.

Remember that a border doesn't have to be 100% opaque either. =]

I agree. *self-proclaimed overlay junkie* Sometimes, a single pixel border, if properly planned, can pack quite a punch
