Say, I want to convert a .bmp file to a .png or .gif file without color loss. I would save it as a .jpg but I dont like the messy pixels. =\

Is there a way to do this without fancy programs? And by the way, I already tried saving it as "filename.png" (with the quotes)

I think if you use Paint, it'll forever be of crappy quality. If you're really unable to download/purchase/come upon a better program, you could always post the image and ask someone to convert it for you. We're all willing to help.

Go to downlaod.com and search for InfranView. It converts things from .bmp to .gif without colour loss.

if you do download psp, theres a function in it where it will convert all the files for you so you dont have to do it manually. its' called a batch process i think, and its in the file menu.

irfran view is great! all i've used it for is making icons tho. it is free tho, which is good :)
