what does it mean when you're asked to select a mirror,and what do i do?

I'm assuming this request is coming in before you've actually downloaded the file? If so, a mirror is just a term they're using to describe alternate download sites. Generally, you should pick the one closest to you geographically, because the download will go a bit faster. Otherwise, I've never had it ask about any other sort of mirror during the install process.
