Accessing layers

In Paint Shop Pro, if you save as a .png, the image becomes a merged image and you lose all of your individual layers (as it is with any graphic program, I believe). In order to save the individual layers, you have to save as a .pspimage/.psp/whatever it is.

Problem: I thought I had already saved as a .psp, so I saved a graphic I made in a .png format, and happily closed out of Paint Shop Pro, unable to access the layered version ever again.

Is there any way I can get my layers back...?
