I saw one topic on DS and none on PSP, so I made one for both.

DS will certainly encourage originality, although probably more due towards the touch-screen than the dual screen. There are several wacky ideas circulating around projects. Among which is a portable four-player version of Super Mario 64 (Just a year ago, it would have been crazy!)

If PSP is a success, Sony's gaming market will become very huge indeed. However, with the success of the Gameboy, it's not going to be easy. However again, several companies seem to be willing to take the risk, so who knows?

Please do not swallow the mattresses.

If you wanna read up a bit on the two, just go to Gamespy.com, and look it up 8)

Personally, I prefer the look of the PSP but DS looks slick too, plus PSP it also uses a type of minidisk thingy. I can't remember about DS, and I'm too lazy to check :P.

I think it's gonna be a pretty fair competition between the two. They're both pretty good, and both seem to have games at the quality of PSOne/N64, or even better.

o_O

On second thought, PSP looks a bit better. Meh, just my opinion. Sorry for the long post :P

OK, I knew this would come eventually.

DS

Big Name Games (Mario, Metroid, Zelda, megaman, well maybe)

ONline play

late n64 graphics

a mic

two screens

a touch screen

good battery life

pictochat (a built in chat program)

wireless multiplayer

Clamshell design

Some of the best game out there

They use cards instead of discs. WHile they may cost more and can hold less data, but they can't be messed up very easily and you need durability in portable gaming

cheap price ($150 for the system and $30 games)

PSP
Well, there isn't a single game that interests me yet.
online play

Purdy graphics (a little worse than ps2) but that eats up battery life

one big screen

bad battery life (speculation)

wireless multiplayer

mp3 player

easibly scratchable screen

It uses UMD discs that can hold a lot more data but are easily scratched. Plus they have to spin while you play them and that eats up more battery life.

They are realeasing some movies on it (like FF7 Advent Children) but why watch a movie on a little system when you can watch it on a dvd at home? (they are realeasing FF& advent children on DVD) Plus, playing movies eats up more battery life.

While the price in not comfirmed, it would be nearly impossible for them to get it out for under $200.

OK, that post was a little biased but I didn't lie about anything in the post. In the end it is your call, if you want REALLY fun games with decent graphics, then get DS. If you want crummy games with purdy graphics, then get the PSP. To me, the choice is clear. I have even already reserved my ds at EBGames.

Now, with the graphics, those PSP screens aren't what it will actually look like in a real game. Here is another comparison,

Now, there isn't much of a difference there, is there?

DS>gba>N-gage(you heard me!)>PSP

PERIOD!

I know how to solve this! I'll just take 'em both! ^^; Okay, so yeah, I know that's never going to happen. It just depends, do I want a Playsation or a Gameboy Advance Advance... Gameboy... Playstation... Gameboy... Playstation... AH I'M SO CONFUSED!

I like the graphics on the PSP (after all, it's just a portable version of the bigger console. PlayStation Portable? PSP? see?) and I've always wanted a PS2... *stares at Gamecube*

But then again, the graphics on the DS aren't the super-duper best, yet they're waaay better than some dumb old GBA graphics, there are most likely going to be Legend of Zelda games involved at some point, and there's PictoChat, and the LOZ games, and a microphone so you can yell at it, and then there's the LOZ games that I must own...

The only thing I'm worried about is game plot quality. Yeah, I do design graphics in my spare time, so I like to just turn on my games and analyze them, but what I really like is when the game has a good storyline. Or atleast a storyline at all. To get to the point, I saw a screenshot of a game coming out for the DS (some Sonic thang) that was only about moving your finger across the bottom of the screen. Now come on people, why would I want to continually run my finger in a horizontal path oover and oover and oover? Now Nintendo stated that was only one of the "parts" of that particular game, but what is the other "part"? I'd sure hope the other aspect of it would be actually controlling the character. Although one game shouldn't be used to judge the whole system (and that's not what I'm trying to do) that game was about the only one they described the controls so vividly. Which scared me a little into re-thinking what the controls of other games could possibly amount to.

So in my final decision, I will be getting the DS now, and possibly the PSP when it's older and they lower the price. IF they lower the price...

And this Topic reminds me, I'm online because I'm supposed to be looking for a walkthrough for a Zelda game (surprise surprise) right now, not posting on PPT. ^^

I probably won't buy either of them, but at the moment, the PSP has a few games from my favorite series on there. The DS looks nice too, and is cheaper, but many of the concepts (like one of the touch screen uses that was mentioned) are unoriginal and, put bluntly, dumb.

I guess in a sense PSP does look pretty clunky I admit. But with the whole battery thing, maybe Sony includes rechargable batteries with the PSP, and a charger? When my mum bought her camera, she got a free charger and batteries with it, so it's possible...

Bleh, either way, I probably won't end up buying either of them. They'll both cost like $400 or more when they come out, and by the time they go down in price, Microsoft will jump onto the bandwagon and try making something even better :D

errrm, thats a bit rough don't you think? :P PSP may or may not be as good as DS, but hey, it's definately better than GBA and N-Gage.

Umm... maybe some people like watching movies in their car, or on a bus or taxi or aeroplane or.....

Okay, well that was very biased actually. I'm kinda sick of half of the Nintendo games, ever since Rare joined Microsoft. I mean, there's just so many times you can rescue a princess from a big smurf turtle monster before it becomes cliched. I admit there are a lot of games on PSP that will be crap, but same goes for DS, probably more so since Rare left.

I mean, how can you call Gran Turismo crummy? :P

actually the ds will only be $150 but you will most likely be right about the psp being a TON of money.

Now, witht the movie issue, apparently, playing movies will take up a TON of battery so you will only be able to watch a single movie before having to recharge. Also, the psp is supposed to me for more "mature" audiences so they couldn't do it in a car because they would be driving. Now, who watches a movie for like 10 minutes in a taxi or bus? Now, if you are talking about a long bus ride, I would rather play a game for like 4 or 5 hours than watch a movie for an 1 1/2 or 2 hours. Also, on an airplane, I think the wireless signals might mess with the plane, and well cause it to, you know, crash or something.

Now with the DS>gba>n-gage>psp issue, ok, the n-gage might be wrong but the gba over the psp is definately right. I LOVE my GBA! I have like 20 games for it! Believe me, the psp will be worse than the GBA.

I forgot to mention someting! The DS is backwards compatible with the GBA!

And yes, that post was VERY biased, I will admit it but this is how I feel when I hear the letters PSP,

:x :x :x

then,

:roflol: :roflol: :roflol: :roflol: :roflol: ,

then,

:loser: :loser: :loser:

.

Alright, hey to each their own taste, right? Some people are die hard nintendo fans, whilst others aren't. Personally, I prefer Sony, but thats just my opinion.

This reminds me very much of the Xbox vs PS2 vs Gamecube arguements I've heard before. I'm a PS2 fan, but XBox is better in a sense since it's fairly newer (i.e. better graphics).

Oh and the whole price issue is very unreliable. I remember reading somewhere that PS2 would be like $1200 when it comes out, but in fact it was significantly cheaper. Same for XBox, except I heard it'd be cheaper. So whilst you say DS will be $150, you might be right, but chances are the company might decide to bump up or even notch down the price. Or it may stay the same.

Now, about backward compatability... I find it extremely hard to imagine PSP being able to play PSOne games, sheerly becuase of the size of the disks. But if a PSP II or something came out, then chances are it too would be backwards compatable. But PSP II or whatever is not the issue, so I'll just stop talking about it :P

Also, you do know that it's possible to have more than 1 mature person in a car at once, and last time I checked you don't need 2 people to drive a car. And you can hardly say that PSP is 'aimed at a mature audience'. I mean, some games are, but a large percentage will be availalbe and based for younger people as well. And yeah, you're probably right about the plane thing

Anyway, we'll see whats more popular when it comes out. XBox was expected to go very poorly, yet it skyrocketed and is now competing head to head with top game consoles. By the way, I hate GBA games sheerly because they last for such a short amount of time. I've borrowed a GBA from a friend, and was able to finish most of his games in under a week. Face it, GBA games have a very minimal lifespan. Now we have to see how PSP and DS will do.

And hey, in the end, it doesn't matter which system is the best since our opinions don't earn us a single cent (unless you take one of those weird online surveys, but thats another story altogether :P.)

On the price of the ds, ahem, first paragraph, http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/10/07/news_6109869.html . You may be right on the more than one mature person in a car at once but "mature" people usually just talk while they ride.

Now, Sony has stated that the PSP is targeted towards ages 20+. Plus they keep calling nintendo kiddy. While that may be true to some of their games, if you actually look at some of their games, they aren't very kiddy at all. Nintendo has stated that the target audience for the DS is 18+. If you want proof, just check nintendo's official website and look at 3 commercials now running. I won't post any links because, well, the ads are a little, well, not g-rated. Not terrible but not for everyone. You can throw the kiddy argument out the window.

Now, I have played megaman battle network 4 red sun for gba for 84 hours so do don't say that about gba games.

Now it was confirmed today that in japan the psp will cost about $185 american. That is likely to be about $200 in the US. They also confirmed that the battery life is 4-6 hours with the light at max and sound at medium. You can learn more about the outrageous prices of other PSP stuff here , http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/10/27/news_6111570.html?q=1&tag=gs_psp_topslot_click .

The price of some of the stuff there is INSANE!

N-Gage technically isn't in the same market and doesn't even compete with all of them. IMO, it's...

DS > PSP > GBA
