When I read I can ignore just about anything around me.

I almost missed a class in school once because I didn't notice that everyone left when I was reading.

The teacher even turned out the lights and I still didn't notice.

That reminds me of something, once I was so into the book I was reading, I didn't hear the loudest teacher in the school (and the meanest) call my name.
I, too fall under the first categorey, unless I have no time or interest of the subject I'm reading of.

Gehee... I tried not to read too much in class because of that... always managed to get me in trouble. xD But they forgave me because I knew the answer anyways, most of the time.

You didn't even make a catagory for me! You forgot "Reads multiple books a day" AND "Essentially owns all Teen/Children's books at the bookstore"!!!

Seriously. I probably have... oh... 4000-5000 different books or so. I literally have more teen books than my local library.

I'm also a speed reader. I took a summer course when I was... oh... 9 or 10, and I finished at over 1100 - 1200 WPM... I'm faster now, though

I finished OotP in 7 hours the first time, if you don't count the time between when I got the book at the midnight party and started it in the car, and when I started it again after I slept... Any book I've read before, I can read faster the next time, so the next time, OotP only took me about 5-6 hours... I read it over 3 weeks this past time, but only because I'm looking for clues for the next one, so I was reading REALLY slowly...

I have a book with me everywhere... I have a book in the car I've read 3 times already, but I keep it there for when there's nothing on tv... (yes, I have a tv in the car, but it only gets local channels...)

Heh. The night OotP came out was a fun one. I told myself I wouldn't start until the next morning, and when I got into bed at 12:30 I couldn't take it and decided to read "just one chapter". I look up, it's 6am and I have the book done. My bf thinks I'm a freak of nature because I read so fast. :P

So... yeah, firts category for me. :)

I can read at an okay speed and would probably go much faster if I didn't go back every seconds to check if I missed something =)
Distractions aren't helpful though...

Oh, I can read pretty fast, but I usually like to take my time. Plus the books I read aren't that small. So on every few days.

Will you be my friend??? (eyes your bookshelves with a wicked twinkle in my eye....) YEAH!! A fellow speed reader!!!

I can read a 140 page book in half an hour... If I really REALLY enjoy the book, though, I read it real slow-like. XD

The fastest I ever read is a book in two hours in a bookshop. Sometime I felt guilty reading so fast because the author might have spend a year on that book. :P

It really depends on what sort of mood I'm in, what I'm reading and if I chose to read or if I'm more obligated to read. If it is required reading it will usually take me quite awhile to read it and I'll put off reading it too. Other than that, if I'm really in the mood and have access to a range of good books I can go through books like they're going out of fashion (they're not already?) one year I ended up reading over 200 books (I know because we had to keep a reading log for class).

I think you need to change your question to "How often do you read". ;)
When I was younger I could finish a book a day or every two days, but now with more commitments that is impossible. Long gone are the luxuries of spending the whole day engrossed in a book (so treasure it while you still can!).

As for speed, I'm pretty particular when it comes to reading. I don't allow myself to skip any words, and even if the exciting denouement is right on the bottom of a page, I firmly keep my eyes from zooming there instantly and instead read all the lengthy descriptions and dialogue before it. I know many people who skip reading descriptions and boring parts, but if I skip or just skim through them I don't regard myself as having read the book. Thus scanning a book doesn't work for me.

Nevertheless, I still read at a pretty speedy pace IMO. Have not really timed myself or anything.

Depends on the book... I'm currently reading something that I started a couple weeks ago.. And its taking me so long because its rather boring :\
I could usually finish a 250 page book in a day if I really wanted to.

A book every few days, depending if its interesting or not..

Edit: Hey, who voted for the cat in the hat one?!

Me. But I just voted because I felt like keeping the person who ever voted first company. It can get pretty lonely up there.

O.O I read OotP in a week.
7 HOURS?
Wow... *is envious* Second category for me. (Though I am top of the class for reading :P)

That just shows how dumb the people are in my school...

I mean I knew the muscles in your butt were the gluteals when I was nine this guy in my set doesn't even know now... ¬_¬
