It's just an alternate alphabet often used by '1337 g4m3rz' and 'h4x0rz'. It can get pretty complex.

If I do recall correctly, wasn't there a topic all about 1337 on the BG board?

Yes, and a horrible sight it was.

I hate all that V17R4 1337 chat speak... It's so hard to read!

Sun Jul 25, 2004 4:56 pm

Yep. It's used by people who think it makes them look cool or just don't like normal grammar and spelling. It makes them look like every vowel and a few consonants on their keyboard suddenly died. Ugh...

There was also like a 5-9 page topic on the old boards here in Misc. Disc. (it wasn't split, I remember that) Someone else asked what that was, and it eventually led to 411 1337 5P34K -_-.

On some days I can read it fine, other days I can't.

I thought by now everyone would know how to read it fluently Jill...oh well. As said, 337 was origionally used by gamers and hackers, but eventually it spread out to become the language of annoying people.

I bet the people that originally used it are either in jail or using normal writing nowadays.
