May I just ask what this gmail thing is? What is so good about it and what determins who gets to hand out the so called invitations etc.?

Yes, I am a bit confused about all of this :P

Its google's free email service, and it offers 1GB of mail storage space. However, you cannot get it through conventional means though. You need an existing member of its service to invite you to join, and the number of people each existing member can invite is limited too.
