Six examples of motes.

A Mote is a small being of magical energy taking a specific elemental or environmental form. Most Motes are fragile Battledome items with low offensive or defensive power.

The word mote means a very small particle (such as dust or sand). It may also be referring to emoticons, as most Motes have a smiling face.

Battle Motes

Motes are items categorized under Brightvale Motes but were originally categorized as Magic Items. Though they are considered items, they are living, a fact all the more true from the Book The Water Mote, which tells the tale of one such Mote. All Motes have a 20% chance of breaking each time they are used but will not break until after the battle has finished so they can be used unlimited times in a single battle.

Motes are generally considered to be bad items to use in battles due to their high chance of breaking and their low attack and defensive powers.

As of August 2013, there are 34 battle motes and they are as follows:

Air Mote You might not even notice this mote unless you are paying attention... Bubble Mote The bubble mote is most effective against fire attacks and can temporarily give your creature invisibility. Electrical Mote This happy little mote is just crackling with electricity. Nova

Although called a Magic Item, a Nova is considered a Mote due to its ability to hold all elements of magic within it, and not just a single one as regular Motes (a fact established in Neopets: The Darkest Faerie). There are two main kinds of Nova, the first being usable in the Battledome and the others being miscellaneous Novas with no function.

There are ten more kinds of Novas that serve as minions for Dr. Sloth: Mechanical Novas, Fire Novas, Pulsar Novas, Dark Nova, Light Nova, Friendly Novas, Attack Novas, Mecha Novas, Super Novas, and Ultra Novas. They are featured in the game Nova Defender.

Novas that are found in Nova Defender

The Scarabnova is unique, because it can be considered both a Nova and a Scarab. It is retired, obtainable only from the Brucey B and the Lucky Coin plot. In the Battledome, it either steals a Nova from the opponent or destroys them all. The Grey Nova and Christmas Nova have no battle functions.

Battle Novas

These Novas can be used in the Battledome. Most are single-use (also known as bombs) and will disappear after being thrown at an opponent. Wands, Staffs, and Rods will create Novas of the corresponding type in the Battledome. The Scrolls, however, do not produce any Novas, but do roughly the same amount of damage as the Scroll's respective Nova and can be used multiple times. For example, a Staff of Dark Nova will produce two Dark Novas each round it is used. Rods are considerably more powerful, because in addition to producing three Novas, they will also heal, attack, and defend, and they will not break. There is currently no Rod of Ultranova. Due to their relatively high price and low power, only Ultranovas and Rods tend to be used in the Battledome.

Nova A nova is a rare magical mote that will not only heal you in battle, it will also damage the opponent with a beam of light! Battle Information Attack: 2.2×Light   Effect: 2-12×Heal	Supernova A supernova is a very rare magical mote that will not only heal you in battle, it will also damage the opponent with a beam of light and fire! This powerful mote will only work once though so use it wisely! Battle Information Attack: 2.6×Fire   3×Light   Effect: 2-16×Heal
Ultranova An ultranova is the step up from a Supernova. Its a fiery throwing star that inflicts massive damage - it can sometimes be used more than once! Battle Information Attack: 3.4×Air   3.4×Fire   3×Light   Effect: 3-24×Heal	Dark Nova Are you afraid of the Dark? You will be... Battle Information Attack: 3.4×Fire   5×Darkness   Effect: 3-24×Heal

• As of December 2006, Motes are featured in 115 different items.
• A Mote avatar was released on May 23, 2007.
• The name of the mote Ree Mote is a play on the word remote, as in a far distance. Likewise, Dee Mote is a play on demote as in depression and Ee Mote is a play on "Emo", as in the emotional subculture. This is depicted with its haircut.
