The Chia is short but joyful Neopet that was one of the original species available when the website launched on 15 November 1999. A Chia, Thyassa, was the very first Neopet created on the site, by Donna the day before launch day.

A variety of fruit and vegetable Chias.

They will often by chased by Lupes looking for a snack - perhaps because of this, Chias come in a wide range of exclusive fruit and vegetable colours. They have more paint colours than any other Neopet, including Carrot, Blueberry, Apple, and Pea. Many of these fruit and vegetable colours can be obtained by feeding a Chia a Magical Chia Pop. Orange Chias used to be created with an Orange Paint Brush, they now must be made with a Magical Chia Pop.

While Strawberry Chias have been featured in past Caption Competitions (#943 and #984), they cannot currently be painted that colour.

The only Chia featured in the Neopets Trading Card Game is Hubrid Nox, who is associated with the elements of Darkness and Fire.

Battledome

In the Battledome, Chias have no natural resistances, however they do have six species abilities:

  • Chia Charge - Attack: none; Defence: none; available from level 1;
  • Chia Smile - Attack: 2 x Light; Defence: none; available from level 2;
  • Chia Giggle - Attack: 2 x Light, 2 x Air; Defence: none; available from level 20;
  • Chia Shield of Light - Attack: none; Defence: 1 - 4 x Darkness; available on Chocolate Chia Day only;
  • Chia Bite - Attack: 2 x Fire, 2 x Earth; Defence: none; available on Chocolate Chia Day only;
  • Chia Restore - Attack: none; Defence: none; available from level 15 on Chocolate Chia Day only.

There are also twenty-one pieces of equipment that can only be used by a Chia.

  • The Flosset, a Faerie Petpet, looks like a Chia.
  • In 2002, Joseph Enterprises Inc., the manufacturer of Chia Pets, a brand of plant containers marketed as toys, took legal action against Neopets, seeking to get them to surrender the domains chia.info and chia.biz and pay damages for use of the Chia name, which Neopets had trademarked. Chia Pets are not sold or marketed in the UK, where Neopets was founded and the Chia designed.
