The Moltara Mystery was a mini-plot in which the machine responsible for generating Random Events broke down, and players had to help fix it. It began on 19 March 2014, and concluded on 3 April. It culminated in the release of a new daily activity aboard The Coincidence.
Summary
To commemorate the purchase of the site by Jumpstart, The Neopets Team decided to increase the likelihood of Random Events occurring around Neopia. By the following day, however, the increased number of Random Events caused "something to go wrong", and all normal Random Events stopped. The only events that would appear were garbled messages from a Lutari called Dr Landelbrot, which guided players to the Water Tower in Moltara.
There, with the help of Scintilly, a Robotic Petpet, players repaired a portal leading to The Coincidence, Dr Landelbrot's spaceship in orbit above Neopia. He revealed that he had built the machine that had caused Random Events to occur throughout Neopia, and that it had broken, hence why all the Random Events stopped. He needed players to go and bring him lots of different items to help him mend his machine.
By the 3 April, repairs were complete, and Random Events started appearing again. The Coincidence became home to a new activity, where players can bring Dr Landelbrot the items he requests once per day in order to receive a special random event, that may be good or bad.

Part 1: Nifty Control Panel With Lights
After coming upon the Water Tower Laboratory, users were presented with the first part of the event, which consisted of a set of five puzzles. In each of these puzzles, users were presented with a control panel that contained a grid of lights. Clicking on a light would toggle the light that was clicked and the lights adjacent to that light between red and green. To solve the panels, users had to make all of the lights on the panel turn green by clicking on the lights in a certain order. One new panel was released each day, and every few days the puzzle increased in size.
Each panel, along the method in which it was solved, was the same for each user. Below is the fastest solution to each panel, along with its corresponding prize and the day it was released. To complete the puzzle, simply press the buttons in the numerical order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...) shown below.

Part 2: Aboard The Coincidence - Junk Collecting

Once the Nifty Control Panel step was completed, a portal within the Water Tower Laboratory activated, leading users to The Coincidence, a spaceship orbiting Neopia. Here, Dr Landelbrot, the Lutari who had attempted to contact various Neopians via Random Event was found. It was then revealed that Landelbrot had created a machine that had caused Random Events to occur throughout Neopia, though it has recently broken due to over use.
For this step, users were sent out on a Quest by Dr Landelbrot to collect various items in order to repair the Random Events machine. In each item collecting scenario, users were asked to find three separate items in groups ranging from 2-5. Once the items were collected and given to Landelbrot, they would be awarded a portion of the "machine", then they would be given a 10-12 hour wait in which they had to collect the next set of needed items.
Items
The items requested by Dr Landelbrot are generally common or numerous, often being given out by Dailies or Events and thus are usually low in Neopoint value.
Pool 1
During the first two days, a pool of randomly selected "cheap" items were requested to be found by users. Unfortunately, as a result of supply and demand, numerous items became nearly extinct thus causing prices to skyrocket. For this reason, Pool 2 was introduced.
Below, is a list of items presently reported to have been asked for, in alphabetical order:

Pool 2
Immediately becoming active during the third day, a second "pool" of requested items became available to curb the supply issues presented by Pool 1.
Unlike the previous item pool, this one had the ability to change based on current supplies and pricing.[1]
Prizes
Users could choose to build each component separately or build all three components at once. The prizes the user received changed based upon which option they choose.
