Codestones are special rocks that are carved with specific runes.  On the Neopets webstie, they are a special class of item. There are two cagetories of codestones: basic and red.  Basic codestones are tan in colour and are used to pay for training at Techo Master's Training School on Mystery Island. Red codestones are red in colour and are used to pay for training at the Secret Ninja Training School.

Basic codestones first appeared in Neopia as part of the Arrival of Virtupets plot. During this plot, users were implored to bring one million codestones to the Island Mystic so he could decrypt Dr. Sloth's letter.  Red codestones were first released along with the Secret Ninja Training School on March 13, 2004.br
A codestone is a rock, carved with a specific rune. They are used to pay for a Neopet's training courses at the training schools in Mystery Island.
Varieties
There are ten types of basic codestone. They all shake in the player's inventory. Ryshu explains that, like a student before he has found his purpose, they are restless. In the Training School, there is a secret garden where they can be put in their proper place and be at rest.  Each type of basic codestone bears a different rune:

There are two types of codestone. There is the original type, which bear the runes Bri, Eo, Har, Lu, Main, Mau, Orn, Tai-kai, Vo or Zei, and the more recent design of red codestone, bearing the runes Cui, Kew, Mag, Sho, Vux or Zed.

The original codestones are found either by Random Event or as the prize in certain games (Tombola, Fruit Machine), but can be bought and sold in user-owned shops. The red codestones can also be bought and sold in user-owned shops, and are made at the Mystery Island Volcano from basic codestones. The recent addition of Key Quest to the site provided an additional method of gaining both original and red codestones by allowing players to win them as prizes.

Additionally, there are six types of red codestone, each with a different rune:
History
Codestones first appeared in Neopia as part of the Arrival of Virtupets plot, where they were used to decode Dr. Sloth's letter. Users were implored to bring one million codestones to the Island Mystic so he could decrypt the message. Now, though, they can be used at the Techo Master's Training School on Mystery Island.

{|
The red codestones arrived after the Mystery Island Volcano plot. By combining normal codestones in the Mystery Island Volcano, one can receive special red codestones in return. These are used for training at the Secret Ninja Training School.

Obtaining Codestones
Codebreakers
Both basic codestones and red codestones are not sold at any official Neopian shops.  Instead, users can obtain both types of codestone by fighting in the Battledome or by playing Key Quest.  Basic and red codestones are also tradable, meaning that they can be purchased from other users using the Auction House, Trading Post, or user shops
In the game Codebreakers, the original codestones were shown in multiple colours, in addition to the traditional sandy colour. The only other time this was done was in the old Trophy Cabinet, which displayed a normal, a red, and a purple codestone.

In addition to this, basic codestones are sometimes given out by certain games of chance, such as the Deserted Tomb and Tombola. Users are also rewarded with a single, randomly-selected basic codestone each time they receive the following random event:

Similarly, users receive six randomly-selected basic codestones each time they receive this random event:

|Text=Looks like you could use some more training. Here, take these Codestones and visit me at the Training School. Good luck!}}

Users can obtain a single, randomly-selected red codestone by trading in one of each basic codestone at Techo Mountain.  Additonally, users are also rewarded with a red codestone each time they reiceve the following random event:
