Re: Trudy's Surprise (Slot Machine)! [Split 4 ever]

Yeah. It was HOT this weekend. It was "only" 114°F yesterday where I was and ~112°F on Saturday. Today is ~13° cooler. Makes a huge difference. I did do some work outside, but only until 11 on Saturday and noon on Sunday (worked in the shade and consumed tons of water). Then, starting around 8pm last night, I changed the oil in the truck. It had cooled down to a nice (relatively) reasonable 92°F by then.

120°F is insanely hot for San Luis Obispo (SLO). SLO is usually much more moderate than that, being just in from the Pacific Coast. Many homes there do not even have air conditioning! Believe it or not, I will be in SLO this upcoming weekend :)

Glad temps are better there. To be honest, I've hardly been paying attention. It's summer, so it's hot here, and when it gets hot enough, it rains. Then it's about 3 degrees cooler, but humidity is ridiculous and it's nasty. The only time that doesn't happen is when a hurricane has sucked away all the excess moisture. Then it gets closer to 100 for a change, but no rain.

High heat and that humidity sounds awful. I have never been a fan of humidity, especially when it is hot. I find it hard to breathe. Could be because my lungs developed in Colorado in high altitude, lower oxygen and very low humidity. Growing up in Colorado, we would get that brief early afternoon rain that would cool everything down, but the climate is so dry, the humidity bump was gone very quickly.

Temperatures are reasonable here today, but the sun/sky has been a bizzare orange for the last day and a half from so much smoke in the air from the wildfires. The orange is downright creepy strange. It makes everything in sight an odd color and it is everything. Amazing how much we get used to the yellow sun and all colors are "normal" until they are not.

Glad it's cooled off a bit, Blue! I have the opposite experience, growing up near the beach, and now living six hours' drive inland. We've actually had a few days here recently with such high humidity it starts raining with no clouds (i.e., it precipitates out of the very air as the humidity reaches 100%). I've never experienced that here before, but it was fairly regular growing up where I did. I get bloody noses here in the winter - though 9 solid weeks of rain prevented that this past winter (the rain was due to me finally buying a humidifier last December).

My home state, though a few states north of where I live now, has been much hotter this summer than here, with days over 100 into September (days over 90 are noteworthy though happen every year, so that's 10+ degrees more than what's normally considered high for this time of year).

We don't have hotter summers here, just longer summers. But it's been feeling quite fall-like. The temperature inside my house dropped to 75 the other morning, and I had to pull out a blanket!

"Comfortable" temperatures are definitely from conditioning. Possibly even over short periods of time. I remember delivering newspapers in a T-Shirt when it was around 22°F... It had been below zero for a couple of weeks, and the temperature had jumped up 20 or 30 degrees. I really don't remember the exact temps, but I do remember that the sun was warm and a parka was way too hot. There is no way that I would wear a T-Shirt in sub-freezing temperatures right now. Heck, as Siniri pointed out, 75° is kinds chilly by comparison :)

Conditioning is definitely relative. Also, the humidity messes with how temperatures feel. Learned that from our years in NM. It could be way hotter temps there (like, 90's) but feel cooler than it does here in the high 70's). Vice versa...it can be like, 55-60 here and feel ridiculously cold because of the humidity, when that hardly bothered me in NM.
