Just a bit of an update. I read on the Neoboards that someone has actually calculated how many times various worms appear. The black is the rarest, and is reported to appear 5 to 8 times every day.

For some people, the worms appear in the same 5-minute intervals every day. However, others claim that their times have changed (e.g., they found the black worm at one time, but then it stopped appearing during that interval). Apparently the intervals between worms are not evenly spaced.

So far, I still have never seen either the black worm or the rainbow worm.

Make sure you have the lantern in your inventory. If it's in your SDB, it won't register and you'll get the error.

I am finding that the rainbow is the rarest for me. It only seems to appear once a day, between 8 and 8:05 PM. The black appears twice a day for me any time between 10:50 and 11:10 AM or PM.

I have continued to find my worms every day since the start. My worms are always available at the same times that I have noted down.

I am now in the process of finding additional times for my worms as the black and rainbow do come at a very inconvenient time.

The worms are not random.

For anyone still having difficulty find the rainbow and black worms - remember to try at different times. Once you have found a worm, note down the time. The worms appear for a 5 minute time period each time.

For my worms (so far) on Day One I picked up my lantern at 1.45 and found:
EG:
AM (NST):

1.45 - 1.50 - Blue and Yellow worm
1.50 - 1.55 - Red and Orange worm
1.55 - 2.00 - Purple and White worm
2.00 - 2.05 - Pink worm

2.15 - 2.20 - Green worm

On Day Two of tracking, I got my lamp at 2.10 and found :

2.10 - 2.15 - Red, Blue, Yellow worms

2.50 - 2.55 - White and Purple worm
3.20 - 3.25 - Green and Orange worm
3.30 - 3.35 - Pink worm

Just been tracking from midnight NST and found the 8 worms with 15 minutes:
12.00 - 12.05 - Red, White and Green worm
12.05 - 12.10 - Yellow and Orange worm
12.10 - 12.15 - Purple, Blue and Pink worm

At this point, I didn't track anymore times as I know my Rainbow worm shows up at
7.05 - 7.10 and 8.35 - 8.40 and my Black worm at 8.45 - 8.50 am NST.

All I need to do now is pick a different hour to track worms for different times.

REMEMBER - you can only track worms with a lantern in your inventory and once you have the worms, they will not show up again until you have used the lantern and start again.

Edited for typos and new information.

Thanks for that helpful update Daze. I've yet to find my black worm... but I never ever remember to check in the mornings.

Now that a real method is known, and I can just keep track every 5 mins, I think I'll actually take note for the rarer worms at least.

As is to be expected from what I've read, my times are different. Most of the worms come so often I haven't tried to keep track.

Black: 11:05- 11:10 AM (8:05-8:20 AM NST)
10:50- 10:55 PM (7:50-7:55 PM NST)

Rainbow: 4:20-4:25 PM (1:20-1:25 PM NST)
8:00-8:05 PM (5:00-5:05 PM NST)

I have also been keeping track of the directions to take in the cave. It is the same every time based on what the words are when entering the cave. For example, for me, if it says This lantern is bright, I know that I need to go RLRR.

Arka, you're right about the cave directions. Good for figuring it out. Here's a petpage with all the directions laid out for you (scroll down until you get to the yellow and blue tables, and ignore what they say about worm-hunting). I know three people who've tried these directions, and so far they seem to work for everyone.

I've been working over the past 3 days at mapping out all my worm times. I have about an hour and a half left to go, which I hope I can manage by getting up early tomorrow morning. Once done, I'll post my findings (how many times each worm appears, as well as the longest amount of time between worms of each color). The worms are definitely not evenly spaced.

Thank you.
I'll be interested in reading what you find out about times and intervals.

Got my black worm today :) Alas it's found at a time I'm in class or between class 4 days a week. (I skipped a class today :P)

Okay, here's the information on worm frequency I've gathered. Your results might vary. I've listed the worms in order by frequency, from rarest to most frequent.

Color: # of times appearing in 24 Hours (% of total time worm appears)
Rainbow: 4 (1.4%)
Black: 5 (1.7%)
Pink: 38 (13.2%)
White: 56 (19.4%)
Purple: 81 (28.1%)
Orange: 81 (28.1%)
Green: 146 (50.7%)
Yellow: 156 (54.2%)
Red: 183 (63.5%)
Blue: 196 (68.1%)

Color: Longest interval without that color appearing
Rainbow: 14 hours, 30 minutes
Black: 7 hours, 40 minutes
Pink: 1 hour, 35 minutes
White: 2 hours, 25 minutes
Purple: 1 hour, 5 minutes
Orange: 55 minutes
Green: 35 minutes
Yellow: 35 minutes
Red: 25 minutes
Blue: 25 minutes

Color: Times worms appear (listed as start time of 5 minute interval) -- only done for two rarest worms
Rainbow: 10:45am, 2:25pm, 2:50pm, 8:10pm
Black: 8:00am, 12:20pm, 3:05pm, 4:40pm, 12:15am

Note: these times are listed in EST, but that doesn't matter much since your times will differ, anyway. Two of my rainbows appear very close together (there's only a 20 minute interval between appearances), but then there's also a 14 hour 30 minute interval without a rainbow. Someone else had said that black was the rarest with 5 appearances/24 hour, but for me, the rainbow was actually rarer.

My rainbow and black appear fairly close together around 3pm. Actually, 9 of my worms appear in the 2:50:00-2:54:59 and 2:55:00-2:59:59 intervals, which means I can collect those 9 starting at 2:54:00, and then in ten minutes pick up the black and have all 10 worms. Of course, this time isn't always convenient for me.

What I would recommend is over several days/weeks, as you have time, track the rainbow and black worms at times when you ever might be able to collect them (even if it's just one day/week) -- there's no point in tracking at 3am, for example, if you're never up then. Remember that once you pick a worm up, you won't see it again, so you'll have to forgo that worm during tracking (if you track your latest times first, you'll know when you can go back and pick up the worm so that you don't miss very many days of moltite).

Once you know when your rainbow and black worms make their appearances, track the others around each of those times to figure out what times work best for you for gathering worms. Hopefully, you'll find times where you only have to collect worms 2 or 3 times per day to gather all your worms.
