Microsoft Sam is the default text-to-speech voice in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It is used by the screen reader program built into the operating system.

There are other voices available in other packages like Microsoft Office or Microsoft Reader add-ons, such as Lernout & Hauspie Michael and Michelle. You may choose which voice you wish to use with the Control Panel's Speech dialog box.

Microsoft Sam has also made appearances as the main voice actor of many popular films on YouTube as well as other video distribution websites. Made popular by Jon Graham, director of the popular web series, Arby 'n' the Chief; Microsoft Sam 'provides' the voice of the Master Chief (the titular 'Chief'). Microsoft Sam is also known for the phrase "my ROFLcopter goes soisoisoisoisoi," a phrase emphasizing Microsoft Sam's inability to say the word "soi."

In Windows Vista, it was replaced by Microsoft Anna.
