Rainy. Very rainy. A little windy, too. Tropical Storm Edouard, anyone? :P

I drove through the eye of that storm on my way back from College Station. Despite all of the destruction they cause, tropical cyclones are absolutely beautiful. The eyewall looks like a ring of dark, towering clouds that completely surround you.

You can drive through the eye of the storm?! Wouldn't you kinda be cycloned trying to get in there in the first place by the cyclonic winds that circulate the eye?

Hold onto your seats people... the SL is back.

Glad you got back safe, TOSO. It really wasn't as bad as it could've been. ;) You might see a branch down here and there - we've got a few small ones down in our back yard, woo.

The eye tends to be huge - much larger than your typical tornado, etc. Several times when I was younger, the eye would take up to half an hour to pass. Really creepy when you have torrential rains for multiple hours, then it all just stops...and the sun comes out....and then it starts back again. Yeah for hurricanes/tropical storms!

Since you live in the Southern Hemisphere, you'll never get a hurricane. You can have typhoons, but you might live too far inland or on the wrong side of Australia to be hit by one. Unlike toilet flushes, they really do rotate in opposite directions.

As for experiencing one, it's really a pain in the butt. This thread was written during the Hurricane Rita mess, in which 2 million people tried to evacuate from Houston at the same time, on the same highway, because a level 5 hurricane was headed straight for us. Not fun. Even tropical storms can be incredibly destructive, like Tropical Storm Allison, which dumped a record amount of rain on Houston and caused billions of dollars of damage.

Sunny, with a few clouds. It's nice, but I wish it were warmer.

We never get hurricanes here. But we got a tornado last year a few miles from us, worst tornado ever in Canada EVER. It was scary, we got a few clouds here but nothing big.

It's sun-shining again, though it looks like it rained while I was at work. Yeah for not having to water the yard!

Ugh. Rita. 17 1/2 hours I spent driving with minimal AC and the radio on for the first bit. Luckily we had filled up earlier that week and not driven much, so we didn't run out of gas before getting to our destination. Took 5 1/2 hours to get back, because a bridge was shut down and we had to detour to a two-lane side road that had trees half-fallen over and suspended over the road by the power lines. {shudders} Anyways, the drive should've only taken 4 hours either way. If I remember correctly, I was furious to find out when we got back, that the LDP sand moving had occurred mostly while we were gone.... :P
It was sorta amusing to watch people start their own contraflow on 59...or walking their dogs down the highway.

I was working at Wal-Mart during Allison. We didn't close, though I don't know why not - the only people in the store were the mostly soaking wet employees (the parking lot was like a mini-pond).

For most of the hurricanes we had when I was a kid, we were taken downstairs immediately with the option of taking one toy, put in my mom's closest, and pretty much had to stay there until it was over - or until the eye came through. For a kid: BORING. :P For the more severe hurricanes, my parents would go around boarding up the windows to protect them from flying debris.
I definitely agree that in the long run, they're a pain in the butt. Though I don't mind not having work yesterday.

I sat in my uncle's garage during hurricane charley...that was fun.
I guess we're not the smartest people ever.

So cold. I no longer have male genitalia because of the weather.

Tropical Storm Fay has been here allll day long. And she's still not gone. Nope. Of course not. So it'll probably still be raining tomorrow when i have to go back to school. :(

Don't you live in Australia where the coldest days are the hottest days in Canada?

Cept it's gonna start hitting New Orleans in about an hour or two.

I can't say I'm upset that it's not going to hit us. I was a bit worried for a day or two there...
However, we now have all our hurricane boards labeled. They weren't before. And some were missing, so we discovered that on Friday and my husband made ones for the windows that didn't have 'em. :)
