I typically use asterisks for conveying action, but sometimes I'll use colons or a combination of asterisks and italics.

I use them because asterisks to show action is the most common

Neopets taught me to use asteriks. *nod*
I used to use parenthesis before then, and when my asterik key is broken for whatever reason then I use hyphens.

You clearly like them because you associate them with me, and I am wonderful and stuff. :P

I usually use double colons, except on MSN, where sometimes I do -action- to avoid getting a default smiley when the action starts with a d or an s. I use asterisks for emphasis, not actions.
