Whenever I tell anyone from Japan that I'm from Kentucky, they immediately ask me if we have Kentucky Fried Chicken there. To be fair, I've gotten that from people from other parts of the U.S., too.

And then there's the ubiquitous, "Oh, you must eat fried chicken all the time!"

Um...occasionally, before I became a vegetarian 6 years ago. Seriously, we have a rich culture beyond Colonel Sanders. Heck, just ask me what he's a colonel of sometime!

Yeah, I have a quote to that effect in my AIM profile: "Whenever I say I'm from Kintucky, people look at me nonplussed for a second then bust out with, 'Ohhh.....! KiENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN!!!!'"

I am embarrassed to admit that I didn't know he was a real colonel. I thought it was like Doctor Seuss, where he failed to attain the degree but still called himself a doctor and did political cartoons and stuff.
At least I know other useless state facts, such as: Kintucky isn't really a state, but a commonwealth. I've done research and discovered that there is no difference between a state and a commonwealth except that one sounds a lot more hippie/commie-like. And it was from these kinds of people that you got your fried chicken recipie, with its eleven secret herbs and spices(hint: none of them are ketchup, which probably means we're anti-American).

Well, for certain definitions of "real"...

He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Originally a militia title, by the early 20th century Colonel was a title for the governor to give people when he/she wanted money. Pretty much everyone from Kentucky who's ever done anything mildly interesting is a member--Johnny Depp, Muhammed Ali, and Hunter S. Thompson are all colonels. However, you don't need to be from Kentucky or even be mildly interesting to be a colonel: my boss, Dave Thomas (the Wendy's guy), and the Dalai Lama are also colonels! Also, I've been nominated, which goes to show you what sort of riff-raff they're letting in these days.

They do quite a lot of charitable work now, but it's still mostly a prestige thing.

Heh, Figs, I'm learning a lot about Kentucky today. ;)
I'm with Byakuya, even if it's a fake, I think what Armite found is pretty hilarious.

Of course, you can't talk about KFC without the good old "Why did the chicken cross the road"
...and Colonel Sanders answer:
"Did I miss one?"

In 2010 we will meet up at the Commonwealth games where our economic theorists will compete against each other in a tree hugging competition.

Shapu, I adore you lol.

Anyway the KFC in Rolla random closed down between my weekend visits. And by closed down I mean their building ceased to exist.

Besides Lee's is better. But aparently in St. Louis if you go to Lee's it means you live in the ghetto and might get shot.

*shrug*

I guess I like my chicken with a side of crunk.

The Texan analog of that is an "Admiral in the Texas Navy."
