I swear, there's always several new "I lost a pet" topics here every week...
I agree. There is always a risk and unless you are wiling to take that risk, you shouldn't be transferring a pet.--and the risk is made even worse when there is an expensive petpet like a mazzew attached to the pet.
My daughter has successfully transferred several painted pets (babies, jellies, plushie) to her dad and me and to secondary accounts, but knows that there is always a risk involved in doing so. She also knows the best time of day to do them (in other words, do them when NO ONE is on)--never in the evening (US time), never on a Thursday (Better than You released), never on a weekend, never when the snowager is asleep-- a Tuesday morning at 10:00 am is the perfect time of day. And she never, ever keeps the petpet with it--that is just asking for trouble because some people pound surf just to be able to later sell the petpet. And, she does it herself by having both accounts open on the same computer at the same time--one on IE and one on Netscape. She has the autolink for the transfered pet ready in one window before the pet is abandoned in the other window. And, finally, she has really quick little fingers with which to type.
Never, ever expect to transfer a painted pet to a friend if you are on two different computers and at two different locations. Unless you are in the same room and have both accounts open on the same computer, you are just asking for trouble.
No one has to give you the pet back--and personally, I think it is kind of rude asking anyone to do so. They spent their time looking for the perfect pet in the pound, paid nps for it, and are excited about getting a painted pet, and then you burst their bubble by asking for it back. I am sure to upset a lot of you by making this statement--but that is the way it is.
Lots of people can't afford pbs and therefore, pound surf to find a painted pet. It is not fair to take that pet away from them simply because you failed at your attempt to transfer it.
And, besides, the chances of you being able to get that painted pet back from the new owner are next to impossible, even if the person who adopted it is nice enough to put it back in the pound again so you can adopt it. Unless you have both accounts open on the same computer, most likely you will not get the timing down to the exact second and a third party will intercept the pet--leaving both of you disappointed and a totally new owner to deal with.
EDIT: And, why do I take this stance, you might ask? Because when my daughter just started playing Neopets, she couldn't afford a pb. She found a rainbow korbat in the pound and paid 2000 nps for it (because of its level). She got horribly harassing neomails from the person who put it up for adoption and from the intended recipient--telling her to turn it over or else. And not just one neomail but 50 in an hour. Try telling a kid who did absolutely nothing wrong but be in the right place at the right time and who was lucky enough to get a rainbow pet that she has to give it back--and especially when the people who transferred it feel that they still have ownership of it (gee, I think that stops when the pet begs you 15 times not to do it before the abandonment takes place) and then are downright nasty in their requests for it back. Ownership stops when the pet is abandoned--regardless of how much time or nps you put into the pet.
And, I have experienced the loss of a pet first-hand. My daughter had a cloud gelert that she was attempting to give to me and someone else got it instead. Before the trade, my daughter had written (without my knowledge) in the pet's petpage that it was an attempted transfer of a pet and if someone intercepted it, would they please give it back? The sweet thing who got it offered to give it back and I said no. I told her that she was so nice that I wanted her to keep it--that if we even tried another transfer, someone else might get it instead--and I would much rather that she have it than someone else who might not be as nice.
Tested made this fabulous set for me!!! Isn't it great?
