Self modding will never happen on these forums. It would absolutely be abused. If you see a thread that needs splitting/locking, PM a staff member who can do so.

Nicely put inrun. As I said, I can imagine the abuse. Just like a Report button is abused.

I have to disagree on that mentality.

Some people abuse forums, and post inappropriate material; but that doesn't stop PinkPT having forums, does it?

Just my 2 cents.

To me your post doesn't make sense.

They don't seem to make sense to a lot of people. I always seem to offend people involuntarily.

I was kind of hoping you'd explain about what your post meant, never said anything about you offending anyone.

Hm.

Just because something is abused, doesn't mean it should be banned outright. P2P for example, is abused to share warez programs-- but it has good uses too, such as sharing important patches for programs, et cetera. That doesn't mean P2P should be banned.

Forums are used to discuss topics-- some are useful, but some are not. Does this mean it should be banned, because there are a few people abusing the forum system?

I think it would be better to put it these terms and not thinking of any abuse factor: Is it a feature that we desperately need given the current state of the forum? The answer would likely be no since there isn't that much need for such an addition since it only covers a small percentage of forum use.

I could never say posting in a smaller box makes my posts any less thought out. It's a convenience issue. Simply, I click the topic. I note there is something I want to say. I open the box, look back a couple of times, possibly, to address certain points, and type a response, check through it, then post it. I'm not any less like to make incorrect spellings, partially due to the fact I use Firefox, and therefore my spelling is automatically checked anyway, and partially due to the fact that it's only typing in a smaller box. They can always be altered later, anyway.

I can hardly say every post I've read is thought out and pondered over before it's posted, anyway. Briefly looking at some posts in Miscellaneous Discussion, I flicked through a couple of threads, with both, all responses spanned less than one width of my screen. There would really be very little against installing the feature, to be honest. It's only a benefit in my opinion. Not everyone uses broadband too, I say we should embrace our dial-up brothers.

Embrace them by increasing the size of viewtopic pages so that they all load slower?

Being one suffering from dialup, I am supremely indifferent, but the quick reply thing DOES make it load slower...

Not necessarily. I just checked another forum I visit, also phpBB, and the quick reply mode can either be turned off fully, only made to appear on the final page, or always show. The form can be open automatically if you wish, and it can be a basic text box, or one with smilies and the like, too. So really, as I was saying, no reason not to.

So it's quicker for you to load a whole new page, instead of having a few more bytes on another page?

I'm all for the quick-reply tool, but I don't believe it's really nessecary.

By that mentality, little progress will ever be made, in my opinion. If the forum was only controlled in that matter, then, for example, why would we have the button that lets you see the last unread post? It's a convenience, much like a quick reply would be, but a benefit to the forum nonetheless.

Overall it probably is quicker without the quick reply because if you dont reply to all the threads you view you're loading the quickreply box anyway

To be honest, I don't really understand where everyone is getting the idea that somehow, quick reply functions dramatically increase loading times. Of course there's going to be a difference, but I predict it to be minute.

I kind of feel like I'm talking to a brick wall here. I don't understand why everyone is so opposed to something that'll do no wrong.
