Oh God no. What was the point of Venom, really. He appeared in the last 40 minutes of the film! It was so rushed! I (being a comic book virgin practically) didn't see the evilness or twistedness of Venom, the way he's apparently meant to be portrayed. And he wasn't Venom, he was That 70's Show guy! Worst casting ever. Isn't Venom meant to be huge?!

Personally, I think the film should have been centered round Sandman and the cymbiate suit and ended when we first saw Venom, setting us up for number 4. Apparently, the director didn't want Venom in the film at all but the producer assumed that was what the public wanted. Okay, so we all wanted a incredibly rushed film where there was no depth to any of the characters at all?!

However, Sandman was badddd. Kudos to whoever cast him.

What was up with the badly directed tap dancing across the piano scene? Urgh. I did, however, enjoy the Saturday Night Fever strut down the street. Made me giggle. But why did Peter Parker suddenly turn into Emo-man? Please god, just kill the fringe!

Rant over. :D

It became so funny when it was Mary Jane being hit. I personally don't care that much, but she is darned annoying to a lot of people.

I don't think people are saying kudos to abusing woman. I think everyone just enjoyed seeing someone whiney get the smackdown.

Well, that's your opinion. Please don't criticise ours here. That's what the <s>dead</s> debating board is for.

I'm not debating the finer points of spousal abuse.
I know it's wrong, and nothing will ever convince me of the funny side.

Well, it's a film so it's not real. And it's not a film about hard hitting issues, so you don't have to react as if it were real.

And Kirsten Dunst is hella annoying.

*Points to last post*

Like I said, I'm not going to debate the finer points of it, it's not taste. it's not matter of opinion, you can prove it on an Etch-A-Sketch to a chimp.

And Ofcourse I'm going to react this way? I have seen the effects first hand, I've heard the crying and seen the tears.
Everybody has their pet peeves. Some people hate animal abuse, others hate deforestation. I hate things like this not being taken seriously because it's like, OMG not real.

Edit: To clarify, it's not the presence of the matter in the film, it's the fact that half the world is laughing because it happened to someone that is annoying (Yeah, shes bloody annoying, doesn't make it funny)

Replies to the thread, in tiny font to avoid spoilers:

There was a purpose to her getting hit by Peter. If you watch, he is under the influence of Venom (hence the emoness) he is angry, vengeful, arrogant, and loads of other things. Hes being pinned against the wall, fighting back the bouncers, about to start a HUGE fight, and MJ rushes in, Peter no, what are you doing etc etc, he reacts without thinking, slams her to the ground and you see in his reaction, that he finally realizes what he is doing is not who he is. He doesn't like it, and decides to change it, thus, he rids of the suit. No, it was not the best thing for him to do, but when you're possessed by a evil symbiote do you really do the right thing?

As for the EMO. OMG PEOPLE! It was a way to physically change the appearance of Peter from Peter, to venom-Peter. He was cool, hip, full of himself, he thought he was teh cool, but people cringed at him on the street, they saw him for what he was, slickback and arrogant. They were physically showing the difference between Peter, and Venom-Peter as well as through character.

As for Eddie Brock... well, I love Topher Grace, not sure he was the greatest for the part though. But I honestly don't believe we've seen the last of Venom, theres still Carnage.. and we have to have Venom & Carnage together.

Exactly, Gwen is dangling in the air and her boyfriend is just snapping photographs?? Nothing in this movie is very real, even if you ignore the fantasy bits of it.

Yeah, and I've been a 'victim' (hate the word victim) of it, so don't act like it has to be totally humourless because of that.

And yeah, it not being real makes a difference. I don't like the idea of cows getting shot, but when it happens in O Brother Where Art Thou I wasn't appalled.

If people laugh, there IS a funny side. It's offensive, but it's humourous. Whether you find it funny or not, it's irrelevant, some people do. Not everyone is like you Setekh. Suck it up.

I didn't think it was funny that Mary Jane got hit. I find it strange that anyone would laugh at that part. I certainly didn't think it was a joke at the time, to be laughed at, and no one else in the theatre laughed at that part. And sometimes there is "canned laughter" in movies, that is recorded laughter played in some parts, so you know you were meant to laugh at a certain part, or it was somehow supposed to be funny. But there was were no clues to indicate this was supposed to be funny at all. Sometimes people pause to in their speaking to give us time to laugh, and I didn't see any of that.

I thought it was meant to show how evil the suit had made Peter, that he would hit someone he loved.

If spousal abuse tickles your funny bone that's your business.

Quite frankly there are things that you find funny or that you take humor in that other people don't. Obviously there's a disagreement here, and it needs to stop. This thread should not become about whether or not it's hillarious to hit someone else, this conversation needs to stop and be taken else where.
