4 8 15 16 23 42 are 'The Numbers', a sequence of numbers that keep popping up on Lost. We first heard about them in an episode where one of the characters won the lottery (in a flashback) with those numbers, but then finds that after his success, everyone connected to him in any way suffers horrible luck.

Then, on the island, the numbers again pop up in the hatch, an underground...thing. One must enter the numbers every 180 minutes (I think that's the # of minutes; I can't remember), or apparently something very bad will happen. At the end of last season we were sort of told what, but then the hatch went boom explodey and so we have an incomplete answer.

ETA: and the clue to those being the number for the contest was in the first post of the thread, when TOSO said "Namaste, and good luck", which is a phrase associated with the Dharma Initiative, which is apparently the group that made the island a research facility in the first place (it isn't really one anymore).

They're the Lost numbers. Featured in the show in many ways. The word 'namaste' is also used in the show, TOSO posting it was a hint.
