Nick, I sincerely envy your ability to work hard and receive money for it. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to either work hard or receive money. For now I seem to be able to receive money by getting sick, so it looks like I'm working hard when I sit in class and take notes.


I guess this might just be a local thing, but here my counselor was always telling us how anyone could get scholarships--like there was one that went to the person who could write the best essay on how cement helps us, and there are others that are just lotteries where your name gets drawn(actually, I won one of those, and it paid for my first semester at slacker college).
If those don't exist for you, that's major suckage, and I'd send you some of our random scholarships if we could.

Igg, I definitely agree with you about the system. When I went for my undergraduate degree, my parents helped pay for my first two years, but my last two were all on me. My beef with the system is that no one takes into account who is actually paying for your education. When my parents were paying, yes it made sense for my financial aid to take their incomes into consideration. When it was my turn to pay though, they were still looking at the income of my parents, which to me does not make sense. If they had looked at my income and realized that I was only making around $2000 a year, I would have received a buttload more in financial aid. I think the whole system is flawed and needs to take into account that times are different and things have changed. [/rant]

True confessions. I was living with my boyfriend while in college (note: this was a horribly long time ago but the system hasn't really changed one freeking bit). Neither of us could get financial aid because, even though we were on our own and starving to death, the government looked at our parents' incomes. So, we figured it out. We got married. Therefore, according to the law, we weren't dependent on our parents for tuition. And we qualified for all sorts of financial aid then. Because we were no longer kids of middle class parents, but a poor starving married couple in college. NOTE: I do not recommend this option. We married way too young and divorced about 6 years later. I am pointing it out only because it is a darned shame that we had to resort to that option just to be able to go to school. And sad to say, I doubt that we have been the only ones to figure that out. The system is very flawed.

I am, of course, referring to the system in England. Scholarships/grants are quite different, Moongewl- basically you can only even try and get scholarships if you are in some way disadvantaged e.g 'poor', part of an underrepresented ethnic group etc. Likewise there is a ceiling for grants- if your parental income is more than (approx.) £33,000 per year (gross) you're entitled to nothing.

In my family, as I have just said, we are triplets. We are all starting University next year. There are no concessions for the financial strain out family will be under for the next 3-4 years due to University.

Igg, I feel your pain. I'm in exactly the same position... except without the two brothers.

However, I'm in the process of moving out so the role of starving student with minimal income may help me out after all.
