Christopher, you've never watched a birth, have you? Just in case, I won't spoil the surprise.

I have, and it sounds as though fourty minutes later after everything is cleaned up and you've gone home you unexpectedly have another bunch of babies, albiet slightly smaller ones.

Christopher, since you witnessed a birth, maybe you saw afterbirth and just didn't realize quite what that nasty thing was. Afterbirth is the placenta, which is expelled AFTER birth, hence the word. It is the grossest nastiest looking thing you can imagine (OK, maybe there are worse things, but it ranks way up there). You can read about it and see a picture of it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placenta

When I gave birth, I, luckily, was too strung out on pain meds to see my own. Though my husband almost barfed from the smell (poor thing was in the room at the time). However, I have witnessed dogs' and cat's afterbirth and it is about the same, just not as big. Just as smelly, though.

I know that. Joking about birth apparently doesn't work. Back in the old college days the sex education person came round and she made the mistake of mentioning that the placenta is eaten in some cultures.

The class demanded recipes.

You have to be kidding. hahahaha. Ewww! Though I had a birthing class with this mom who insisted on having her baby born at home and she said that they were going to cook and eat the placenta to celebrate. Lordies. She didn't get the chance. The kid was born with some thing coming out of the side of its head (I didn't want to know what it was and I was attempting to be polite at the time she told me) so they ended up having to go to the hospital after he was born. My guess, though I never asked, was that they had no time to eat the placenta. The kid was in ICU for a couple of days.

I've heard that hard-core vegetarians, the real nut-jobs, will eat placentas because it's the only type of meat that doesn't require another animal to die to produce it. It's really gross.

I assume by "hard-core vegetarians" you mean vegans. They're not all nutjobs, you know. My sister and some of her friends are vegans, and I've never seen as single one of them parade around with a sign saying "ANIMALS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PEOPLE" or spit on strangers who wear leather. So I guess I'm saying that you can be a vegan without being a nutjob, but if you're planting bombs in the local Burger King, you're probably both.

Placenta's also used as a hair treatment. It sounds gross, but fascinating at the same time.

The only people I've ever heard of eating placentas weren't vegetarians. O_O I do know from personal experience, however, that if you look hard enough, you can find placenta recipes. *shudders and cries*

It contains a great deal of nutrients so my guess is that it would be fabulous on damaged, chemically treated, or superfine hair.

This is really turning into a big issue in some circles. A group of female lawmakers are calling for the health minister to step down, and the PM's approval rating has taken a hit.

Here's another article.

Uh, let's not encourage this hair placenta thing, shall we? I bet it's really boring. Not fascinating at all. (Moongewl dyes my hair!)
