A small brewery in the Netherlands has launched a new beer designed to bring cool relief to thirsty dogs.

Kwispelbier, marketed as "a beer for your best friend", is made from a special brew of beef extract and malt.

The beverage is a creation of pet shop owner Gerrie Berendsen, who wanted her dogs to share light refreshments with her after a day's hunting.

The beer is non-alcoholic and fit for human consumption, but costs four times as much as a Heineken.

"Kwispel" is the Dutch word for wagging a tail.

Ms Berendsen, who lives in the eastern town of Zelhem, commissioned the small local Schelde brewery to make and bottle the beer.

"Once a year we go to Austria to hunt with our dogs, and at the end of the day we sit on the verandah and drink a beer. So we thought, my dog also has earned it," Ms Berendsen told the Associated Press.

My horse likes beer. He'll steal a bottle and kick it back all by himself if he's allowed. And we definately don't like to allow it (it's not healthy! And nobody wants an alcoholic arabian!), but some animals do get a taste for it. And so long as it's non alcoholic, whatever, if a dog likes it for it's taste and it won't harm it, ah well.

Maybe I should give that to my dog so it will stop trying to drink rum...

Haha, if people will pay that much money for a "doggie-beer", then let them. A huge waste of money IMO.

Psh, tell that to the dog.

My parrot loves the alcohol. If you have it on your shoulder while you're holding a glass of wine it'll take a decent sized swig if you aint lookin :P

Indeed some animals do get a taste for beer. E.g When a herd of elephants got drunk on rice beer went on a rampage through a village in the northeastern Indian state of Assam and ended up trampling three people to death (including a four-year-old boy) two months ago.

My dog just eats fermenting apples and gets drunk off those. He gets the shakes afterwards and we've had to have his stomach pumped once.

We got rid of the apple tree last week after it happened twice in a week. We had to strip the apples off and put them in the wheelie bin then drag the tree into the paddock.

A pointless hour of work just to stop the dog getting drunk :P

I once put a plate of beer out in the back garden and the snails all had a merry time in it - they were all hungover and passed out when I checked the next morning.

I don't know that I would buy that for my dogs, they seem very content with water and occasionally one of them will stick her face in my coffee mug. I think it's just a waste, dogs don't need beer four times the price of beer we drink. It'll either skyrocket because of people who are very attached to their pets, or it'll flop immediately when people realize how much they're spending.

Personally, I think this is a cool idea! In some respects, I think dogs have as much right to drink beer as us. They must get really fed-up with drinking just water all the time. If this beer makes its way to the UK (which it probably won't but there you go) then I'll definitely buy some for my pooch!

Our dog has had alcohol before and it made her a little bit tipsy. Twas funny, but I'd never ever let her have a lot of alcohol. What I'd done was let her drink the rest of my coffee because she loves coffee and I forgot I'd put some alchohol in it.

At least there's no chance of her getting drunk on THIS stuff though ^^

What a smart little pooch. Perhaps, it is time for an intervention. *lol* The entire family confronts the dog and says "Fido, you have a drinking problem."

lol this is just plain ridiculous.
although i did buy my dog "puppy ice cream" once...
she LOVED it.
*shrug* It was a very hot day in the middle of summer and i figured it would cool her off :P
Ok, so maybe I can understand buying this as a little "reward" on a very hot day...
but I don't think it'll sell well enough to stay on the market all that long.
