Censorship

Sat Dec 16, 2006 10:52 am

They say that neopets is censor crazy. But I found one problem in their games. I am really against swearing I hate it.

But while I was playing Hassee Bounce I found them using the word "OMG". Almost everybody knows what that stand for. And they have the game down as a kids game.

I think that they should remove it if they are so censorship crazy.

For alot of people that stands for Oh My Gosh. And as far as I recall God is not a swear word.

Yes it could stand for "oh my gosh".

For all we know TNT could use it to stand for something completely different.

But I did hear at one point that people could find the word "God" offensive

Oh my goodness works too...

it's not the word people find offensive. it's the way they're using it.

TNT is allowed to use words or abbreviations on the site we're not allowed to use, plain and simple, because everything they type can be monitored by humans. For the zillions of users, all they can do is put in stringent filters. It's a double standard, yes, but what can you do? Storm their headquarters shouting "Be completely fair to us or else!"?
Actually, that sounds like fun. I'll start collecting torches and pitchforks.

Also, with the internet lingo and such, over the past couple of years abbreviations have actually become words or ways to say things without saying them. Like OMG, LOL, ROFL, G2G, and TTYL. Every person reading this either knows exactly what they stands for or what they means. OMG is really just a way to express suprise, just as LOL is to show humor. It doesn't always mean you are in fact laughing, it just gets the point across, as does OMG. And that is my opinion on the matter 8)

Parents should be watching as kids play online and if OMG is so offensive, they can just remove neopets from the list of sites their kids play at. It's not neo's job to be everyones parent....

Or that's just my opinion.

typing terror is where i notice the least censorship

But that's not the problem. Neopets are contradicting themselves by censoring an acronymn on the chat room --- yet they use it in one of their games.

Heh, same here. Last time I played, while I was doing the "boss," they included the words aroused (or arousal or something), desire (or desirable or something), and sensuous (or some such - my exact memory is terrible). None of them meaningful alone, but in a string in one game it was hilarious, since I can't even use "weed" in Word Poker.

Actually, the word 'hell' crops up on the site quite a bit, most noticceably in the Gallery of Evil. Also, I found 'damn' somewhere, but I forgot.

Wow, TNT either needs to get on top of this or they need to not censor us for doing as they do.

I remember someone posting a screenie here on the PPT forums not too long ago about a certain BAD word (like, literally straight up banned, not even just "well, this MIGHT be banned") in The Eliv Thade game. It was technically not supposed to be a word, since it was an acronym...but there's always that chance in an acronym to actually spell a word...even if it's BAD. =O

I havent seen anyone suspended or warned for saying 'omg' on the chats, if thats what youre trying to say o_o

Also, TNT sticks 'bad' words sparingly throughout stories. The vaguely suggestive words like the ones that pop up in Typing Terror arent being used to purposely cause trouble, be sexy, or offend anyone. If they suddenly allowed all users to swear, it would be taken advantage of by tons of people. Whatever hypocrisy you may see in that is perfectly acceptable to me.

Too many players cant handle the freedom of mild curses or slightly suggestive/drug related words. I personally wouldnt want these things removed from TNTs own games and stories because a few people are upset that they cant swear too.
