Don't you just love how I make up rules as I go along? It's definitely not because I want to space out level growth enough that everyone in the game doesn't learn a new move at the exact same time.

However, anyone who attacked the Gym Leader (and was acknowledged above) DID grow a level, so you guys get moves probably. Also, if any Pokemon faints another one, it'll grow a level too.

So is Makuhita still up for battling?
