When I was at school I was constantly bullied. Every day it happened, in almost every lesson, even as I was walking to school and coming home from school. A few times I had to leave school ten minutes early because the girls in that lesson had threatened to beat me up at home time. I was spat at, beaten up, verbally abused, tripped up in corridors. We had two buildings, the upper school and the lower school. To get to and from each one we had to walk down a path in between the large school fields. In the middle were a couple of trees and it was pretty enclosed. One time some girls decided to corner me there and abuse me. Teasing, pushing, hitting, spitting, the lot. I cried ALL the time while I was at school and this only made it worse.

This doesn't even just happen at school either. It happens as I walk down my street. The children here don't like me and they spit at me and kick me and call me horrible filthy names. It hasn't happened for a while now but I know that it could happen again at any time.

I've even seen people abuse me from a number of websites I come across and what made it worse for me is that a celebrity of the television even bullied me, even though she has never seen me or even heard of me. She doesn't know who I am or what I'm like but still, she abused me, made me angry, hurt my feelings.

All because I'm a redhead. I'm filthy, I'm ugly, I'm stupid, I deserve not to be happy because I just happen to have one of the most 'minging' hair colours on the face of the planet. There are thousands of other redheads in the UK who have the exact same problem as I do. It's not racism but it isn't far off. And it still really hurts to hear people far and wide, even from celebrities, talk about us and abuse us like this.

Atleast you're not prematurely bald.

When you're like, 13, and a girl.

That'd be crapper.

I see nothing wrong with any color or style of hair, that people berate you because of this is completely preplexing to me. Infact, one of my good friends, who's a girl, has red hair and I think it looks great. I think it's a great hair color, and again, i'm astonished that people give redheads trouble.

My friend is a redhead and she is one of the most beautiful women I have ever met. She used to get called names constantly but then she started laughing with them and it soon fell apart. She hasn't trouble since she was 14. Maybe you just know crappy people.

That's really... stupid, seeing as how red hair has been known to come from that part of Europe.

And it may not be racism, but it's sure borderline racism.

Yes, but it can't be racism because my race is white. Hair colour isn't a race.

That's ridiculous(their behaviour, obviously, not your feeling bad about it). From the age of twelve I always wanted red hair, because it's unusual, and I've never seen a natural redhead who had ugly hair.
Maybe if I'd grown up with red hair, I'd hate being a redhead, but for the time I did dye my hair red, I loved my hair. It's really sad, and unfortunate, and downright stupid that other people won't let you alone because of your hair. I wish you lived here--no matter what color of the spectrum, people let other people's hair alone. I know because I've dyed my hair quite a lot, and nobody said anything bad about my hair when it was red or any other color.

Yes, but it can't be racism because my race is white. Hair colour isn't a race.

Depending on how you look at it, it is. It shows that you're heritage is from a certain European area (Irish and Finnish are the two, I think) and different from the others. Skin color doesn't have to be the only factor determining race.

The main reason that these people keep bothering you is that you're showing them that you're bothered by what they do. If you even simply ignore them completely and show no fear whatsoever, they should at least slow their assaults. Also, try to make a friend or two...they'll attack you less often if you're in a group.

Did you ever talk to anyone about this problem, like school teachers, or your parents or anybody? It's understandable that it was hard, and strange that kids would just gravitate to pick on you, but as a youth, did you atleast act in some proactive fashion?

Your older now too, focusing on this is doing nothing for your self-esteem ecept a lowing your to be more sorry for yourself. A lot of people were bullied when they were little. Don't talk about the troubles you face, be about them. Have you ever thought about perhas doings something? You could join a volunteer organization, perhaps going around to schools in your area and talking about bullying and prevention.

It's a chain of trouble, and I've seen a lot of kids (especially working in an ECE program, and with elementary students), suffer form bullying, and grow into it and accept it as if there's a reason for it.

And you accept it too!

Thats what I fail to understand. You can't accept that there's a reason for people to insult you. You're actually flat out calling yourself filthy and ugly. if you call yourself that, what stopping others?

I don't understand. All this is happening just because you have red hair? You are sure you are not bringing it on in any way, like there could be another reason, too? That doesn't make sense. O.o

Kids don't make sense. I remember hearing a supermodel talk about how her son got teased...because his mother was a supermodel.
Anything that makes you different makes you a target for teasing. There doesn't have to be any more reason than that. And if you show any sort of weakness, if people see that it gets to you, they only tease more.
