A rectangle piece of paper cut to roughly the same size a bookmark would be.

Anything. Everything. Old postards. New postcards. Pieces of paper. On extreme cases, one of the dozen bookmarks I have lying around. Sometimes I use a folded sheet of paper just because so I can take notes about the book on that page.

If it's a library book, especially an old one, I just fold down the corner. Or lay it down open, spine-up, on a desk or table.

If it's my book, a new book, or someone else's book, I use an actual bookmark.

I used to fold the pages, though. But after a while, and it happens a lot, I've read it so much, that nearly every fifth page has a fold in it, and it, uh, well some stay folded. :P

Same; with me, however, when I folded them, after a while the corners just fell off (er, literally- fold down and the paper split at that fold), so that's mostly why I stopped. :P

can't find the sig from this set, so instead, you get a <3 .

I have a bunch of LotR bookmarks that I keep losing and relocating so when they're easily accessible (findable) I'll consider using one of them Otherwise, my bookmarks are usually the cardboard tags that come on new clothes that are reasonable neutral - the current one is silver on one side, dark grey on the other with 4 words in dark grey writing on the silver side and silver words on the dark grey side :)

I usually just remember which page I'm on, or rely on the softcover book to magically remember the last open position (I guess that strains the binding a bit, but hey, it works). Airline boarding passes are also a favourite choice if i'm reading a book on a plane.

I have a leather Harry Potter one that I use, although because I tend to read two or three books at the same time, I use reciepts, and even jewellery - anything that's on my bedside table.

I'm not a fan of broken spined books or of folded over corners. I worked in a local library for years and these things either needed repaired or would make the book unlendable... you should have seen some of the books I had to repair... ripped pages, covers being minging, written on books.

In fact, the romance (Mills and Boon) section was generally taken out by the older generations visiting the library... they used to write in the back, front or on a specific page their signature so they knew when they had read a book. Thing was, we used to rub out or tipex out the signatures every so often. Often the poor old dears would take the same books home, but it was alright, they'd forgotten the plot anyway. But shhhh... don't tell anyone.

I have an awful confession to make.

I.....I..... made dog ears in the books I read!

*Sniffle* but, but I've gotten better now with the bookmarks. I mostly used scholastic award ribbons now, since they really don't make me feel accomplished. "You get an A for EFFORT!"

Nowadays I just fold the corner, no matter what my teachers have ever said about the pages "breaking"; my Harry Potter books are still as good as new with a million folded corners...

I do have bookmarks, but the last time I used them was... was... when I was eight  I just find no real use with them apart from decoration :roflol:

I memorize the page number. Generally put it to the tune of my favorite French march for some reason. I forget it about one in four times, but when I do, odds are I've read the book before, and I can fumble around for my page without fear.

Do what you will; but I will hinder it if I may.

Honestly it depends on the book. If I'm just reading a cheap paperback, I just dog ear it. If its a book I care about (or borrowed,) I use whatever is around to mark my place. I never bend the spine though, I like the pictures on the end and the white marks look ugly on the shelf. My sister was reading one of my manga books and bent the spine, I gasped so loudly. My poor Trigun Maximum 2 :( She couldn't understand why I was upset ><

I have a Simpsons bookmark, from the Treehouse of Horror with Bart as the Raven. It says Quote the Raven: Eat my shorts! But I can't find it, it's in the piles of my junk somewhere. At the moment I'm using a sort of brochure from a doll company...it's a bit thick, but it's hard to lose track of and it also doubles as an example when I tell people about the dolls I collect.

When I was younger I didn't even use them, but when I started using them I just ended up losing them anyways. So I've taken to using clothing tags to mark my place in books. XD

I always lost my bookmarks so now I just fold the page but sometimes the fold comes undone

Hmm...
I usually make dog-ear folds. Sometimes I find a bookmark and use it, but it's not very user-friendly to use a bookmark, because if you read to one paragraph and used a bookmark, you won't know which para you stopped when you returned to reading the book.
But when I borrowed my friend's book, I ALWAYS uses a bookmark! :P Usually I use the magnetic bookmark (so that it would not get lost), but sometimes when I cannot find my magnetic one I use a normal one with a ribbon. XD

I am an evil habitual page folder. I usually fold the page to where I stopped reading. I don't think I have ever used a bookmark. If I don't fold the page; then I will use a receipt (usually the one I got from buying the book) and I position it to where I left off. Or any other piece of paper I have around when I stop reading; sometimes I've used a pencil. If it is an older copy of a book or just one which I will want to preserve a little bit; I will definately not abuse it by folding down the pages or sticking anything in it which will damage it too much.
