Do you all think that this can Really be solved with what is given? It doesn't seem like it to me, but it'll be great to see TNT's reasoning, if so. I guessed Bonju did it for quite a few reasons, but I hate that it seems like an obvious clue at the end of the last comic (so, being too obvious, it isn't really the answer). It seems weird to me that Hoban is all over the ship, usually just standing around (except when he's at the helm, where he should be). For whatever reason, I chose 5:00, at port, and at G14 (just because someone earlier in the thread argued for it). I don't really get the grid thing, myself; why would someone produce it in the first place? Unless it was for meeting check-points. I congratulate, wholeheartedly, anyone who gets all the answers right. (It almost makes me feel that there are no right answers - but TNT wouldn't do that, right? )

For the record

Who pushed Hoban? Anshu
When did he fall? 5:00
Where on the ship did he fall? aftdeck
Where is Hoban now? G19
Do you like Hoban's hat? yes, it's very stylish

I've got no clue if this is right :)

Anshu says Hoban was arguing but Bonju tells us that Hoban was calm. Anshu also says that Bonju doesn't know what crawled up Hoban's bum and died. Sometimes when two people get in a fight it's because one is offended and storms off and the other 'doesn't know what that guy's problem is.' if you will. So that makes me think Bonju.

When did he fall? 5:00

I dont think Bonju would have waited long to push him off and it seems to me that the storm ended at 6 (the last X on the grid - really anyone could have placed that on there.. maybe even bonju to cover his tracks?)

Where on the ship did he fall? port railing

I meant to click aft deck... but oh well, port railing works too.
Where is Hoban now? G19

The X that matches up to my timeline. (O being 12, each X being an hour later.)

Do you like Hoban's hat? yes, it's very stylish

sure, why not?

I came up with that too. *Crosses fingers*

I don't see why so many people are acussing Anshu. Sure his story has lots of inconsistencies, but how do we know he's not actually telling the truth and that everyone ELSE has been inconsistent? I dunno.

That's why...because TNT wants us to think that the answer isn't obvious, and therefore, made the answer obvious...

Who pushed Hoban? Linae
When did he fall? 6:00
Where on the ship did he fall? aftdeck
Where is Hoban now? G19
Do you like Hoban's hat? yes, it's very stylish

*Shrug* Just give me a sidebar, TNT, and I'll be satisfied...

I think it was an accident, personally. The Ruki is the only one with real motive (he wanted to go to Krawk Island and Hoban said no, so maybe he took matters into his own hands), but I still don't believe he'd go that far. Linae thought Hoban was bad luck, but I don't think she had some premeditated plan to off him -- at dinner, it looks like she wasn't taking his "let's see you laugh when I sail you into a storm" thing seriously; she just thought he was grumpy. She only decided he was bad luck when they actually did end up in a storm! I don't think he intentionally sailed them into it. It really was just bad luck.

The three things that bug me most: Linae claims she helped the Ruki fix a leak near the end of the storm, but he claims he patched it first thing when the storm started. The Ruki claims he was talking with the Chef at 5, but the Chef claims he was with Hoban at 5 (if Chef was really talking to the Ruki, why would be claim to be alone with Hoban, which makes him look more suspicious?). And if Hoban went over at 5, which I do think he did (6 seems too late), why didn't the Ruki and/or the Chef hear the scream that the Nimmo heard?

:battar: Really! He's so cute, and so sensitive . . . although he might've been somewhat of a lazy bum . . .

another thing... I think its a sure bet that the ruki and linae were conspiring about something... what?? Could she have had a reason for going to krawk island? A Kou Jong tourney perhaps? Maybe the chef was also interested in going to krawk island. What the heck was he carving??

Kentari the only one who hasn't aroused my suspicion in any way. Which makes me suspicious!!

6:00 is too obvious. 5:00 is better, but we have 2, albeit unreliable, witnesses to Hoban's existence at that time. So again, I am concerned about going with the obvious.

As for where he fell off? Since all the witnesses are completely unreliable, I think this one is a crap shoot.

And who changed the map in the map room and spilled the red ink? what's with that? If someone knocked over Hoban, would that really necessitate plotting a change of course on the map?

Oh no, I have found a mistake in my thinking - The question says:

Where is Hoban now?

Not what location he fell - so the time he fell doesn't have to match to the location he fell. :(

Working backwards from "what does Hoban's hat have to do with anything/everything" *ahem* ...

It was Chef with his pointy knife. There was no time to put dishes away so he had to pocket the huge blade. It accidentally jabbed Hoban toward the very end of the storm near the crates falling overboard (Hoban is seen standing next to Chef) at 6 when the storm was most rocky and they lost almost all of their supplies. We can only hope Hoban is hanging on for dear life on a floating crate, rather than lying dead at the bottom of the sea. *Sniff.*

The reason Chef stole the knife? He hated Hoban's hat and wanted to carve it to bits. He was near Hoban the most, probably stalking him for his hat, but didn't even have the heart to mug him when he heard about how Hoban was affected by Linae's comments. *Awwwwwww.*

At first I thought Anshu's motives were most suspicious and his story most consistent, but I can't figure out if it is Chef or Anshu that is lying now. Chef's stories seem to have more holes in it than probably Hoban's hat does now. *Chuckles.*

Kentari, I also agree is suspicious because he is least suspicious in a way. However I think his story is to point out to us the fact he noticed Chef taking a knife from the weapons storeroom.

I don't think Linae has anything to hide, since she is apparently very forthright, insistent, and consistent about her sheer dislike for Hoban. If she had any mal-intent, she would have slipped up or come out with it intentionally.

The reason Anshu claims Chef doesn't know what was bothering Hoban was because Chef just talked to him calmly (while secretly coveting his hat) and figured Hoban would be alright from then on.

If the curve on the "nav map" indicates the curve at the end of the "grid map" (reasoning the X on the nav on the other side of the line is where they went off course after the storm), extrapolating crudely:

G19 - "Someone" had to mark their place after the storm, indicating their re-route to Krawk Island.

G14 - If Hoban was seen up until almost the of the storm (Linae is next to him at the wheel last thing in her story, resentfully working side-by-side with Hoban) he must have fallen off shortly thereafter but before the next morning when anyone noticed he was gone (whomever marked G19 and I22).

:roflol: Laugh if you will, it is the best I could come up with (for now). :P

The maps tell us - that is what they are there for. And with the site posted above you can see that both maps are needed to work out where Hoban is.

Hoban couldn't have stayed in the same spot he fell because:
1. He couldn't survive in the sea for so long.
2. Waves/tides would have carried him away.
3. TNT wouldn't have needed to put "what time" and "where is he now" if both answers relied on each other.

It was just very late last night when I tried to think it all through. I have now been awake for awhile, and I am thinking more clearly. :)

precisely....

the maps arent there to tell us the location that hoban went or where the ship went........

.... but for telling us where OTHER things are, such as islands.

I dont even think "G19" is a possibility, because there arent enough verticle lines on the chart to go exactly from A-Z... that CANT be just a coincidence.... and because then a few of the coordinates would line up with X's... which would line up with an island, which is a location. Krawk island. Which then brings be to believe G19 is almost a red herring in the list of possible answers.

Is it just me, or when you put in your answers, as of right now, the only answer you can give for "do you like hobans hat?" is YES....?
