Ok, here's the deal. i'm having an argument with my friend about the defintions of 'geek' and 'nerd'.

What do you all define geeks or nerds as? I mean, if you call someone one, what do you mean by it? Are you insulting them or not?

Please post your definitions to either or both of these words to help us sort out this argument!!

Rachel :)

The two words are interchangable for me. I don't use them with the intent of degrading oe belittling someone. I think they are terms of endearment. ;P

Geek: For me, it means someone who is like "1337" or something.

Nerd: Someone who is really smart. Eg, Hermione from HP.

Those are just my definitions.

I use them as band geek and band nerd. According to dictionary.com geek means
"1. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
3. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken." O_o strange.

And nerd means
"1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept."

So the words can mean a lot of things, they can be bad or mean that you are accomplished. And I have no clue about the chicken head thing...thats kinda scary.

Geeks, in my opinion, are people who are far too obsessed with something, to the point where they theorize about plot points, write fan fiction, and have an unhealthy relationship with a poster of an attractive main character. Example: Star Trek geeks.

Nerds are intelligent, kind of shy people. Nerds are hot. <3

I find it foolish to call people 'geeks' or 'nerds' so I won't give you a definition because you shouldn't be using the words in the first place.

Geek (alone, without stuff like "band," "movie," etc. in front) = technology smart

Nerd = book smart

Dorks = games (ie most people here ;))

I've had "geeks" yell at me for getting it wrong.

Don't be afraid to see the truth, even if no one wants you to. Be yourself and not a fool. Don't ever be afraid to speak your mind and listen to criticism. Dissent is keeps our country progressive and willingness to challenge yourself is what keeps yourself ever evolving.

My own little definitions:

Geek: One who knows too much about useless things.

Nerd: One who knows too much about useful things.

no geeks ive ever known have used 1337 in any manner other than to mock people whom use 1337.
ie: we dont use it, great leet however is another story.

geek:play those games that are evil EG; D&D, warhammer, magic the gathering etc etc.
also generally know many obscure refferances eg: the probability of a space marine terminator destroying a necron monolith in close combat (1 in 216) and often many odd cartoon/ tv references (three hours talking about the finer points of thunderbirds anyone?)

Nerd: those there smart people.

(by the by, im apparently a geeky nerdy goth, dunno where the goth bit came from but fine)

I agree with Fiddleysquat (ha ha ha), Geeks are to me are someone who is overly obsessed with something to the point where it pretty much consumes their free time (art geeks, video game geeks, computer geeks etc.), while a nerd is smart, knows a lot about a lot of different things, and analyzes things waaaaaaaaaay too much.
