I'm just saying that after a long time of random clicking, that was the first pattern I tried that had supposedly worked for other people. It could just be a coincidence, but if it worked for me then it might work for others.

I imagine that the combination for fixing it depends on the orginal setup of the valves and switches. My fix method was a little more complicated than the ones that have been posted. I couldn't even tell you for sure what I changed to get it fixed, but I did make a drawing of my intial setup and it sounds different from everything else I've read.

There's probably a set of combos that work, which is why some people are getting results with the same combinations. I agree that your setup at first entry is probably the key to solving it. If people were making a note of their valve positions on 1st entry we could find out for sure. Unfortunately I'm not one of those people, heh.

OK, that's twice now that I absolutely know I turned a valve open--that is, so that the + part of is is straight up and down--and when I look at it after changing something in another room, it's been turned to X. What does it mean?

There was some forum bug that set everyone's "Always allow HTML" in their profile to NO instead of YES. When you put it back to YES, quote html works again. :)

Nope... the plushie room doesn't exist anymore...
before it was simply three moves in any direction... now there's nothing there... my feeling is that the library maze won't change until the next clue is released.

concerning the many rooms of the library, every room has a link similar to: (some-very-long-link)&arcx=2147483649&arcy=0&cmhv=(some-very-long-link)

the "&arcx=___" is the number of the room you are horizontally speaking, while the other one is where you are vertically speaking. by plugging in room 9, and 99, and 999, and 9999, and so on for "&arcx=" to see how many rooms to the right i could get, it changed on me after i plugged in 9999999999 (10 9s) to 2147483649. this changed after clicking to the doors on my right and left and looking at the number. interestingly, when i click on the door on my right many times in room 2147483649, it fluctuates between 2147483648-2147483653, not even in numerical order. sometimes it even goes beyond 53, but it stays in that range mostly.

this also happened when plugging in 9999999999 (10 9s) into "&arcy=". when i plug in any more 9s, my number resets back to 1. perhaps this is interesting?

Actually that number is close to the maximum for a signed integer. And in a computer when you add to a signed integer more than it can hold it overflows (no pun with the plumbing) and gives a funky number that does not seem logical to what you put in. Sounds like that may be what is happening when you get to the edge.

Also make sure not to select the "Disable BBCode in this post"-field, I think that disables quoting too (not 100% sure though, but I'm having it switched off now, so if this quote appears correct, then it surely won't harm unchecking it ;))

EDIT: well, seems like the BBCode probably won't have to do anything with it, what Officer 1BDI said applied to me too, my quotes didn't work either, how silly of me not to check the "disable html" thingy... so thanks officer, it now works again for me too :)

I am certain it is random to get past the water works puzzle. Very late last night I got home and seen the Protector had been released, followed the steps provided at the beginning of this thread, and got through the door with no problem. Clicked the various dials and levers for a short while, but nothing. So then I started reading the thread to see if there was an actual pattern to solve the water works, and saw that after a while it would flood and you would start over. I figured it would be easier to start over than to figure which ones I had clicked wrong. I went into the room on the left and just alternated clicking on the two dials. After about the fifth or sixth set of just clicking on the two dials and doing nothing else, I got the "rerouted properly" page. Since I was just going back and forth between the two dials, and they were in the "winning" posistion more than once before I properly rerouted, there cannot be a certain pattern to get through this part.

Ironically, this makes the most sense. Whoever commented this puzzle is UNFAIR, I second that. I have tried for hours and am one of few left still not gotten the water fixed. I HAVE noticed that the second wheel in my 1st room turns off ANYTHING from happening in the 3rd room, but that is about it so far. And since routing the water is "random" for us all there is no main goal that I see except to make sure that water is flowing from room to room, but not welling up to the point of overflow in any one room?

And again, I complain, THIS IS LIKE A REALLY BAD MYST GAME! :x
And I used to love Myst. Because there was order and logic to it! :cry:

It's fixed !!!!

Praise be to the Gods...any Gods...really :cry: I'm so happy it's fixed and trust me, there is no pattern.

I was one of those who spent hours trying to document every possible combination and finally I gave up and went to watch tv. I've just gotten online now, decided to try again, gave some random switches a click or two, did the same in the next room and then the next and then there it is...fixed!!

I'm so happy.. :cry: TNT should have a hazard warning on their plots 'May cause mental breakdowns'

well, I've tried having all the water in pipes and all the water in buckets so its not that...

Anyhow... since my flooding sequence was the same as several others (the one in while they all point up) perhaps all those who have it that way should have the same solving method... if that were the case then we can assume that, for those who flood by having them all point up, they can't do the following:
========
I saw this on the NeoBoards, and it worked for me, so here's hoping it works for you as well:

All your valves will be "straight", meaning they'll all look like a + sign, not an X. In the room to the left, you should just have the two valves pointing straight. In the main room, the first you come to when you go through the door, both valves should be straight, and the lever needs to point up. In the third room, what I believe to be the varying room, you have to alternate up down up, or down up down. In my case, it was UP-DOWN-UP, and then they rejoiced that I fixed the plant. Hope this helps you

========
because I can flood by having them all point up and that one doesn't work for me. This theory would be disproven if somebody, who can flood by having them point all up, can solve it using the preceding sequence.

There also seems to be atleast 3 differrent solving sequences because I did not start with the lever in room=2 pointing down. Here is my intial sequence:
room=1: X +
room=2: X X h(up)
room=3: h h h

================

I think the key is to flip switches till something changes in the first room. (i.e. the water moves to a different place) Then immediately go into one of the other rooms and flip switches till something changes etc...

================

I changed everything in each room once... no dice. I also just tried getting all the water in the middle room (room=2)... no dice

That sequence worked for me, and flooding happened with all the switches up.

Is there anybody still on the valves puzzle willing to try something very simple for me? Reset so you start fresh then just put everything on the opposite of how it started. If it's a +, make it an x, if it's up, put it down... and so forth.
